Avatar n tn I am speaking from experience and again if you suspect your child has PANDAS good chance is they may not have any of the diagnosis that the doctor is using the meds to treat. Pandas children should be treated with antibiotics and Aleve. I have one of the best PANDAS doctors out there. I had to learn the hard way about the psych meds so if I can help anyone out there NOT to use them in the case of PANDAS I will share my story.
Avatar f tn Controlled studies have shown that children with Oppositional Defiant Disorder and other disruptive behavior disorders show short and long-term improvement when taking Risperdal. There may be a place for the atypical antipsychotics in some individuals with AD/HD and agitation. The atypical antipsychotics can often cause weight gain in both children and adults. Abilify, (aripiprazole) is less likely to cause weight gain or metabolic problems." (from - http://www.baltimorepsych.
Avatar n tn I must disagree with the other poster. Risperdal was approved by the FDA for use in children on the spectrum in 2006 to treat *repeated* bouts of aggression and irritability as are other anti-psychotics. My son was diagnosed with Asperger's when he was 3 and has been taking Risperidone (Risperdal) for 4 years in varying dosages. Without it he could not have attended mainstream schooling as his aggressive outbursts were a danger to himself, other children and adults.
Avatar f tn We have used Risperdal with our 12 year old son in the past, 2nd and 3rd grade, but due to weight gain he had to be taken off it. We had major problems with sleep so when he went off the meds he went back to not sleeping. Then we found Melatonin, it is a god sent. It is a natural supplement that has helped a lot of children with atuism and other disorders that effect sleeping. As for the agression we have tried behavioral programs that help with it. Good luck.
Avatar n tn He has done quite well with Allegra for seasonal allergies, and even better with Zyrtec. Zyrtec is OTC but allegra is not. Both are well tolerated with Risperdal. Benaadryl is not good with Risperdal. My son, age 17, is zonked out when he takes both. He basically is out like a light and doesn't wake up in the morning (until about 12 hours later) the few times he has taken it. Not good at all. Claritin does not work for him either, nor anyone in my family.
Avatar n tn My 3 year old son has been diagnosed with ODD and has been put on risperdal but he is still very violent towards my 11 month old daughter, myself and my mum. He hits, pushes, bites and he also sits on my daughter pusher, pulls her hair and sometimes bangs her head into things. I am at my wits end not knowing what to do.
Avatar f tn My 4 year old started risperdal on 28 May for the conditions are above. Will she take it forever or is it a lifetime treatment This discussion is related to Depakote, Risperdal, Luvox in 8 year old boy.
Avatar n tn what are withdrawl effects on children age 9year old female coming off risperidone? dosages was 0.5mg of rispiradone in the morning with 72 mg of concerta for ADHD. AND A 0.
Avatar m tn //www.medscape.com/viewarticle/874722 You should have a diagnosis from your doctor. Anyway to ask the question specifically? When do you do a med check?
7087196 tn?1389306119 Well, Celexia is an antidepressant and is usually used for depression. Risperdal, of course, is an anti-psychotic used for Bipolar. Guanfacine has multilple uses with anxiety and ADHD being the main ones. However, it "May not help attention (ADHD) as much as stimulants." It seems like he is mainly being treated for Bipolar and not ADHD. Oh, and the fact that Ritalin did not help you really has very little to do with him.
Avatar f tn t agree more with the other posters. Get a second opinion asap. Do NOT put your child on Risperdal. These serious anti-psychotic medications have NEVER been formally tested on children - meaning there is no conclusive medical research regarding the effects of these kinds of meds on children. These meds can cause extreme side effects in adults. God knows how a 2 1/2 year old would react. Speech therapy is definitely a good idea. Best to start this while the child is young.
Avatar f tn You know I believe if the child is suffering, then they need medication to end the suffering. Social Anxiety is awful, I have it and it is miserable. I would go for the mood stabelizer over the klonipin since klonipin is only a bandage and not really treating the anxiety. Plus it is addicting and that's another issue you don't need to deal with. I would ask the doc if he could come off the Risperdal and go on a mood stabelizer rather than add it to the mix.
Avatar f tn This is hard isnt it to se your son feeling like this my sympathys are with you, ask your prescribing Doctor if once he is weaned off the resperdal , if you can try leaving him without meds, a lot of caring parents are now trying using food supplements to help their children, and it has been noted that a Multiple Vitamin with B Complex and Vitamin C and also Fish oil isĀ benificial to children, if you google this there is a lot of information and look at the thread on this forum that starts &quo
687098 tn?1240889420 Not every child can tolerate stimulants, but it sounds like you have not tried this course yet. I have worked with children who present with more severe behavior problems who were prescribed risperdal or clonidine, so it may be useful to you to ask your physician why he/she has selected that drug in particular for your son. Psychological testing may be useful in determining to what extent your son has difficulty thinking clearly, and can inform medication choices.
Avatar f tn One site I do like is crazymeds.us. It will have all the meds except kapvay. You can start with risperdal found here - http://www.crazymeds.us/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Meds/Risperdal?from=Risperdal.Risperdal Then find the others by going to the "list of medications by name" on the left of the page. "Kapvay is the only drug which is approved by FDA for the treatment of ADHD in children of age 6-18 .
Avatar n tn Does your daughter have a headache when the meds wear off? When the dose is too high it can often leave you with a headache, which makes you irritable and cranky. I can personally say it has happened to me. When my dose was too high it made my head hurt and therefore making me cranky as all hell.
Avatar f tn Actually, behaviours common to anxiety can mimic ADD/ADHD and sometimes children have been misdiagnosed with either ADD or ADHD; when, in fact, it was anxiety that was the problem. My original thoughts were leaning towards Tourette's, but that diagnosis has been ruled out. I'm wondering if the above poster has the right idea - ask for a second opinion. Sorry I can't be of more help ...
Avatar n tn Relative to your grandson's weight, Keppra (an anti-seizure medication) generally does not result in weight gain, but <1% of adult patients in clinical trials with Keppra did experience some weight gain. The weight gain is more likely the result of Risperdal, an anti-psychotic medication that often produces dramatic weight gain. That medication was likely prescribed to address the volatile behavior, not to address the seizure disorder.
Avatar f tn I have an 8 year old son that has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. He was recently hospitalized (for the 3rd time) for threatening to kill himself, and refusing to go to school ( he would become violent with the staff at the school when they would try to make him stay and would threaten to kill himself there as well). He is on 25mg of Zoloft at bedtime and 2mg of Risperdal twice a day. I actually have two questions, 1. Is Zoloft safe for children his age?
Avatar f tn First, I can find no indication that risperdal is indicated for ADHD. " In 2006, the FDA approved risperidone for the treatment of irritability in children and adolescents with autism.[6] The FDA's decision was based in part on a study of autistic people with severe and enduring problems of violent meltdowns, aggression, and self-injury; risperidone is not recommended for autistic people with mild aggression and explosive behavior without an enduring pattern.
Avatar f tn The Risperdal can have many negative effects on children. These type of anti-psychotic drugs have never been tested on children so the long term side effects of children using this drug are relatively unknown. My brother was put on this drug when he was younger and has suffered from extreme weight gain and facial tics. The tics never go away - even with stopping the drug. Risperdal is not usually used for PTSD or ADHD as it is an anti-psychotic.
406058 tn?1210594632 As Sandman mentioned, sometimes it takes different meds to treat different children. Some children need different dosages, some need totally different meds. IF the meds are not working, then call the dr-- no point in continuing them if its worse!!!
Avatar m tn I had very very very good luck with Risperdal combined with Zoloft. I was able to even come off both for 6 years without issue. That is something you need to discuss with your pdoc though and work on tapering under the pdoc's care. Anyway, I found that Risperdal was a game changer and 99.9% of my fears subsided. Best of luck!!!
Avatar f tn I just started Invegra 3mg daily which is the new drug in lieu of Risperdal so I will be curious as to how it works. Supposedly, it is just like Risperdal but much more tolerated with less side effects. Maybe something to ask your doc about although I cant comment on personal usage as of yet since it is so new for me.
Avatar f tn did approve treating children as young as 5 with Risperdal if they had autistic disorder and aggressive behavior, self-injury tendencies, tantrums or severe mood swings. Two other drugs, Seroquel from AstraZeneca and Abilify from Bristol-Myers Squibb, are permitted for youths 10 or older with bipolar disorder. But many doctors say prescribing them for younger and younger children may pose grave risks to development of both their fast-growing brains and their bodies.
Avatar f tn It sounds like you should talk to your psychiatrist about the risperdal and let them know what's happening with the period. It's possible they've seen it in someone else, and they should have an accurate record of what you're taking. Gabapentin hasn't held up in clinical trials as a mood stabilizer, but there are some individual cases where it seems to work.
Avatar n tn He is 10 and on Concerta 54 mg (for last almost 3 years) and Zoloft 100 mg and Intuniv 2 mg and recently Risperdal 0.25 mg every am and 0.5 mg q pm. The neurologist wanted to add another med Abilify on board as he was still having some outburst behavior. I find this troubling that he wants my child on 5 psychoactive meds. we sought a second opinion from a psychiatrist that our son's therapist recommended.
