Risperdal and prolactin levels

Common Questions and Answers about Risperdal and prolactin levels

risperdal

Avatar m tn We know that Risperdal causes dopamine receptor blockade. Dopamine in turn keeps prolactin levels in check. Therefore Risperdal allows for a raise in prolactin levels and this may cause genital shrinkage. My question is, is this reversible once he discontinues Risperdal?
Avatar n tn Antipsychotics can cause reduced testosterone levels and increased prolactin levels. Increased prolactin levels causing hyperprolactinemia can reduce the testicular size . Prolactin levels normally fall within days of stopping oral medication, but may take months to return to normal after stopping long acting depot medication. Risperidone and Amisulpride are main offenders and Clozapine and Quetiapine generally do not raise Prolactin levels.
Avatar f tn Most of the time the first thing to check is a prolactin level, and then if elevated, an MRI of the pituitary. Dostinex or Parlodel are often used to treat this condition. Hope this helps!
Avatar m tn I am not convinced that there is a connection between Risperdal and genital shrinkage. In any case, if there is, then things should return to normal once the drug is discontinued.
Avatar n tn Well it depends. Risperdal is an antipsychotic and it is effective in treating psychosis. Asperger's is a developmental disability and thus doesn't specifically respond to antipsychotics. What is the Risperdal specifically being used for? Also there is a community specifically for Asperger's.
2176476 tn?1338605299 Here on our drug coverage you can apply for a special exemption that will cover medications not normally covered if the psychiatrist says it is needed. May be worth looking into. I am in Canada though and I know our systems are quite different. It seems very strange that risperadone is covered and seroquel is not as they are about the same price. I would perhaps double check and make sure it wasn't an error.
Avatar f tn My mom isn't signed up here so I wanted to ask a question for her: She's 42 years old and hasn't had sexual intercourse since late November 2008. She had some blood work done and they said she had high HCG levels and she just noticed today that she has milk coming out of her breasts. She's gained a whole cup size and figured that was weird for her but she can't be pregnant otherwise she'd be way overdue.
Avatar n tn The only thing they could ever find wrong was a very low level of prolactin and progesterone. I accepted my childless fate, but started mental heath meds (resperdal and lexapro) to combat my depression. One of the side effects of risperdal is increase in prolactin so amazingly my prolactin is back to normal, but I am still the poster child for irregular periods.
Avatar f tn This is a follow up question. With an elevated prolactin level what type of nausea meds can one take. If Reglan is out of the picture can i take Tigan, Zofran, Antivert etc. I am eating next to nothing and have lost over 10% of my body weight due to this. Thank you for your input. My level is 165. Also would this elevation be causing nausea?
Avatar f tn Traditionally, prolactin levels were measured in ng/ml, and normal prolactin levels in women are less than 20 ng/ml. The new units are pmol/l and to convery you need to multiply by 44. This means the normal level is less than 700 pmol/l or mIU/L High prolactin levels can cause anovulation. Some women with hyperprolactinemia may also notice that they have a milky discharge from their breasts. This is called galactorrhea.
Avatar n tn I have high prolactin since i was 14. I have never had a positive test if i am not pregnant. Your doctor should be able to explain. For my understanding high prolactin has nothing to do with being pregnant. Hgc levels are! Prolactin is just an hormone that will peoduce milk on your breast, even male can have high prolactin. Hope this help.
Avatar n tn , thank gosh)and said my prolactin level was too high. They checked it again later that year and the level was ok for someone who was not preggo. My boobs have never stopped leaking. They leak only enough that you can squeeze a drop of milk out if you are trying to. I was reaading the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility and it dawned on me that this might be our fertility issue. Apparently if prolactin levels are too high it inhibits estrogen making.
Avatar f tn I was in touch with my endo yesterday via email where I requested an mri and she is basically saying lets just run the prolactin again once a month for the next three months...She said it is normal for prolactin levels to fluctuate and she is going off of the last reading which was 9. I am going to tell them flat out that I want the MRI done. Based on my symptoms as well as the prolactin reading dropping so many points in a week, something is off!
Avatar m tn That most probably is prolactin elevation which can cause female hormones to increase in males so that there is sexual dysfunction and pain in the nipple area. Having discharge from the nipples can occur too. I did experience that when I was on standard antipsychotics and its a common side effect. It depends on its severity. Having breast milk is rare but that can happen. It should go away in time. However keep your doctor informed and they will follow up.
Avatar n tn Prolactin slightly above normal is not anything too concerning and your endo is doing the right thing checking it out. Prolactin can also be increased with certain medications - such as depots and risperdal - so all those things needs to be taken into account.
Avatar f tn Hello ,I have detected with high level of prolactin 48.2 ng/ml and very slight enlargement in ovaries due to polysycsts.I still have regualr menstrual cycle and dont have any physical sign of high level of prolactin like liquid discharge from breast etc.I am very very stressful for a year so is it stress causing high prolactin?? may i still have the chances to get pregnant before treating these health problem??
Avatar f tn my fiance and i have been tryong to have a baby for about a year now and and we have been trying and have had no luck... i dont know what to do we are starting to wonder if one of us is infertile... we want to have a baby so bad and we need advice on what to do..
Avatar m tn 299 My TSH levels were above the normal range, my test levels were again roughly half what they should be and crucially, the prolactin level (while clinically normal) was still very high for an 18 year old when measured against mean values. I'm sure if my prolactin levels were measured last month, they would be very high. Is this correct?
Avatar n tn Hi I'm a 39 year old female. I went to get my fertility checked out last week. I had an antral follicle count and bloods on day 4. The antral count said I had 9 follicles on left and 3 on the right. Bloods were done for FSH, LH and prolactin. The results were as follows- FSH 7.1 IU/l (2.0-10.0) LH  10.1 IU/l (2.0-12) Prolactin 418 mIU/l (100-500) I'm a bit worried about the LH and Prolactin levels- they seem a bit off for day 4?
Avatar n tn How does high prolactin affect the skin and hair? my skin got saggy, puffy and pale. I am on cabergoline now and wonder if it will help it. Could it have been a decrease in estrogen? My hair seems thinner and "off" Can prolactin also affect allergies? my skin is also blotchy now and my allergies seem crazy.
Avatar f tn the prolactin level is not soley the test to monitor your ovulation. Did you have other tests - like a thyroid lab test and the FSH levels? w/ estrogen - testosterone and progesterone? If you are not menstrating - for sure those levels need to be done.
Avatar f tn I was on Lithium for almost 2 yrs and I can tell you it can certainly screwup your sex drive. I went from 20-30 minutes of bliss to 10 minutes of strain too. The longer you take it the less you will care if you ever have sex again. I am obsessive about sex and my dr had to take me off of it so I went to Risperdal. It was a nice alternative after the transfer period. It kept the voices from getting me nuts.
Avatar f tn Prolactin levels are measured using different units in different laboratories, and this can cause considerable confusion. Traditionally, prolactin levels were measured in ng/ml, and normal prolactin levels in women are less than 20 ng/ml. The new units are pmol/l and to convery you need to multiply by 44. This means is normal level is less than 700 pmol/l. A low level is of no clinical importance. High prolactin levels can cause anovulation.
