1618806 tn?1304734477 d say just stay away from potassium supplements or salt substitutes like Mrs. Dash and you will probably be ok. If you start having muscle cramps though, it could be a sign that your potassium is too high. If that happens, go to the doctor and they will do bloodwork to test your levels. Hope that helps!
Avatar m tn It also seems to make clear that the type of potassium salt you are taking (chloride, citrate, gluconate, acetate, bicarbonate, etc) does not matter. The only thing that counts is the amount of actual (elemental) potassium you are ingesting. For instance we take 595mg tablets of potassium gluconate containing 99mg of elemental potassium. This means that if I am willing to take 20 of these cheap little pills a day to get my 2000mg (2g) of potassium that is just fine.

Avatar f tn You might want to try some supplements like Potassium and Magnesium. Many people suffer from cramps and spasms from a lack of these minerals. They are available at drug stores. You might want to talk to a doctor before using Potassium as it can cause problems if you take the wrong amount. - It is a salt substitute.
617141 tn?1225706428 Transfer was postponed till I get better. Doctor gave me Lasix 40 mg to be taken once and Neo-K (potassium chloride) 500 mg twice daily for 5 days for now. My concern is that I ate two potatoes, one banana, a cup of yogurt, and tomato, all potassium sources today.
Avatar n tn Foods especially rich in potassium (containing more than 300 milligrams of potassium per serving) are acorn or butternut squash, potatoes (with skin), spinach, bananas, orange juice, avocados, lima beans, cantaloupes, peaches, tomatoes, flounder, salmon, and cod. Some salt substitutes also contain high amounts of potassium. [An extensive listing of potassium levels in foods is available from the USDA as a PDF document at http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/Data/SR17/wtrank/sr17a306.pdf.

Avatar f tn major electrolytes in the body are sodium, chloride, potassium, magnesium (all various forms of salt)...... they must all be in balance and each have their own symptoms of deficiency, which can also overlap.
Avatar f tn Hi! Thanks for responding. I am using the OV watch and was just wondering if there is a "loop hole" in this technology. Meaning to say that just because the watch is reading the chloride activity and indicating so on the watch, could I assume I was ovulating as well. Guess I'm just tired of disappointment. This is the first month I have used the watch and it has indicated Fertile Day one-four and OV Day 1 and so on. We've been going at it!

Avatar f tn Potassium is a chemical element and it is part of the electrolyte that should be in balance with other lytes to adequately conduct an electrical impulse that originates with the sinus node in the right atrium. The mechanism of action is not completely understood, but what is when a voltage (unit of potential for conduction) and electrolyte there will conduction and passage of electrical impluses.
Avatar f tn I have swelling/edema most of the time and my sodium and chloride levels are at the top of the reference range, while my potassium levels are low, unless I take daily potassium supplement. Swelling/edema is a symptom of hypothyroidism, but there are many other things that can cause it, as well, including congestive heart failure and others.
Avatar f tn AI is a salt wasting disease. I have AI - my sodium and potassium are always off when I am ill, and usually when I am feeling okay still at the upper or lower end of limits. I have to take a medication to hold sodium. Yes, renin/aldosterone control the sodium/potassium system, but AI will lower sodium, and sodium will effect potassium. But you can have a renin/aldosterone issue without having a cortisol issue as well.

Avatar f tn Random swelling with the foot being fairly normal in-between, suggests diet as a possible cause. I know of one case of foot swelling that was caused by a potassium deficiency that varied with the amount of potassium in the diet. You can easily test for this by having your daughter use a salt substitute during an episode of swelling. Salt substitutes contain potassium chloride instead of the normal sodium chloride.
Avatar n tn she also got blood work done for signs of fatigue (showed up months before this incident) and her chloride and potassium levels were well above healthy. could this contribute to her period being late? please let me know, thanks.
Avatar f tn If I need salt and potassium, then I go for v8. If I just need salt, I get cheap ramen - it has a very high salt content or bouillon cubes. Sometimes the salt gets me out of more trouble than my other meds so I keep a lot of that stuff around.
