Paxil withdrawal mental health

Common Questions and Answers about Paxil withdrawal mental health

paxil

Avatar f tn Paxil is a med that should be stopped very slowly, even if you are starting a new med. It could take several weeks for the Wellbutrin to be working fully, and in the meantime, it does sound like you are having withdrawal symptoms from the Paxil. At this point, I don't think your doctor would have you go back on the Paxil since it has been almost a week off it, but I would give them a call just in case. Paxil can be nasty to come off of.
Avatar m tn i dread going to mental health crisis because i fear they might make me an inpatient against my will. in a mental health inpatient unit thats when the hell really starts. these stupid shrinks thinks everyone that is admitted must be put on a torture drug, i.e. an antipsychotic(neuroleptic). those drugs should not even be given to crazy people they are so inhumane. My doctor is a regular general practitioner thank god. and actually she is a young female and is really nice.
Avatar m tn And how did you feel while going off of it? As I said on the other forum, the withdrawal effects of stopping Paxil are its worst aspect. Another problem with Paxil is that it's stronger than other antidepressants for whatever reason, and often other antidepressants don't work because of that. (Often, Paxil doesn't work anymore either once you quit using it).
Avatar f tn Never been on it, but remember, we're all different. And don't rule out some continuation of Paxil withdrawal, since you didn't finish it, you medicated it. And since remeron and Prozac work differently, and since Prozac and Paxil work differently, no, taking one doesn't necessarily do anything about the withdrawal from the other except medicate it. It might work, but it might not.
Avatar f tn Heroin in far worse physiologically, and Paxil far worse emotionally to withdraw from. And Paxil withdrawal can last a whole lot longer. But the reason it's not addictive is, to be technically considered addictive, you have to need to continually increase the dose to get the same effect. That's not true of ssris. But addiction is actually a medical term that has found it's way into our common lexicon in all kinds of erroneous ways.
Avatar m tn Hi! I was trying to come off of Paxil two years ago for a few months. The effects were so bad: dizzy, nauseous, vertigo, anxiety, etc. When I got down to 5 mg it was unbearable, so my doctor actually put me on Prozac to wean me off since it has a much longer half life. That only took 2 weeks and I was fine during that process! Good luck!
Avatar n tn The reason I ask is because many people get their meds from a general practice doctor when really we should all be getting them from a psychiatrist, they are the ones who truly understand mental health issues and the meds used to treat them. Have you or are you in counseling? I know when my anxiety is flaring up, talking to someone can be just as helpful as or more than changing my medication. One of the best things I ever did was attend a group for people with depression.
Avatar n tn Paxil is known to pack a wallop of a withdrawal, and many of your reported symptoms sound more like Paxil withdrawal than klonopin withdrawal. Klonopin withdrawal packs quite a wallop as well, and is usually gone off of the same way as other addictive drugs -- slowly and carefully, as abrupt quitting can also lead to seizures as this is also an anti-seizure medication.
Avatar f tn that I have finally found a site that actually deals with paxil and the ill effects of withdrawal. I have been on paxil on and off for 30 years after being diagnosed with a chemical imbalance at 17. I am or at least was feeling well and I wanted to try discontinuing paxil to detoxify my body. I did do it gradually which I would advise everyone however even after being off of the pills completely for 3 weeks I still suffer from a sense of hightened response to noise or movement.
Avatar f tn My husband has had mental health problems all his life - suffers from manic depression/bipolar. He has tried many different drugs. Four months ago he started on Paxil - 10mg. There were no side effects to speak of and we credit Paxil for significantly reducing his manic episodes. However. for the past 3 weeks, he has been seized with the most debilitating anxiety. He has never suffered from anxiety before. His shrink upped the Paxil to 20mg and gave him a low dose of xanax (0.25mg and later 0.
Avatar n tn I am a 20 year old, 5'2", 115lb. female and for the past year or so I've been on Paxil, but my entire experience with Paxil is that it makes me nauseous and shake no matter how long I take it for. My body can't seem to get over the side-effects, so for a while I was only taking the Paxil every three to four days (they were extended-release pills) and I seemed to be alright. But for the past few weeks I decided to try to get off Paxil completely.
1473147 tn?1286917921 Different meds affect different people differently. What is weight gaining for some isn't for others. You also don't state if you stopped Paxil abruptly and switched to Zoloft, or tapered slowly off Paxil first before switching. Because you are describing Paxil withdrawal -- it's one of the most difficult meds to stop taking and must be done carefully. Just switching to another ssri won't necessarily do anything about withdrawal from a different ssri.
1402011 tn?1291411782 5 mg from about 13 to 21, I switched to Paxil, and then because of weight gain stopped everything. I found myself back on Klonopin on and off. I am now on K at .25 milligram spaced twice at day at .125 dosage. Here is my question.
Avatar m tn That is really key to trying to minimize withdrawal. Paxil makes a suggestion to go back on and see if those symptoms improve and the wean off more slowly. That may be worth trying. Or muscle through until the 90 days are over (hopefully 8 weeks is enough instead) and see if the symptoms are gone. What was he taking it for. Some are put on Wellbutrin for bipolar help. Could he be having a resurgence of his mental health illness too?
17990279 tn?1462122394 my doctor recently perscribed me paxil for my mental health and well being. He told me that if I start to have the side effect of weight gain, that I could include welbutrin, which would counteract that side effect. Is that possible??? And if so, how would that work????
Avatar n tn Wow, that's interesting. Paxil made me much more aggressive and angry, but I didn't know it was the Paxil until I had to research it when I went through withdrawal. I was even trying to provoke fights, which is so unlike how I used to be.
Avatar n tn I have been on and off Paxil for 5 years now. I started on CR low dose, now at 30mg no cr. My body is used to it... and it doesnt help me very much anymore-although it is better than being with out any medication at all. Soon I will be getting re-evaluated and I know they're going to ask me to wean off it. I am really scared, because I know the few times I have lapsed in dose, it has been absolutely horrible. Any advice? Any info? Everything I find online is abstract and not really helpful.
Avatar f tn Some things here. First, you say you used Paxil occasionally. You can't use antidepressants occasionally, they don't work that way and you suffer withdrawal every time you miss a dose. Paxil is, and don't get scared, along with Effexor the most difficult of all antidepressants to stop taking. Doing this cold turkey was not your best idea, nor was using it occasionally. You need to slowly taper off the medication according to a schedule that suits you, not your doctor.
Avatar m tn Is the problem solved? I ask, because this drug is perhaps the hardest in the entire mental health pharmacopia to stop taking, and if you really want to do it the process should be slow, as slow as you need, not some generalized schedule. But my own opinion is, if nothing's broke, nothing needs fixing.
Avatar f tn Believe me when I say that your doc could have EASILY prescribed you something to at least help you feel better, even if it’s not anything specifically for your mental health. The best psychiatrist i’ve ever seen and the only one to actually treat me and take me seriously is one I was assigned to when I was admitted to a Psych hospital. There are lots of psychiatrist who work between hospitals and regular doctors offices, seeing patients they didn’t meet there.
Avatar m tn I felt like I had the flu and very achy. Very bad withdrawal effects. I was then put on regular paxil 40 mg daily and I constantly had the eye zaps and strong depersonalization feelings like I was in a constant withdrawal. I was then switched to Lexapro 20 mg. It seemed better than the Paxil but I was still getting the eye zaps and depersonalization but to a lesser extent.
Avatar n tn If you can handle the Paxil withdrawal, then okay. If not, the only way to stop it is to go back on it and taper more slowly. Again, neither Zoloft or Effexor, which is an entirely different class of medication, will necessarily do anything about your Paxil withdrawal, and sobbing is definitely a sign of ssri withdrawal. I can't tell you what to do, I can only suggest, based on my experience and my reading, the proper way to go off a med, and your doc isn't doing it that way.
Avatar m tn ve tried to come off of Paxil more times than I can count, and each time the withdrawal symptoms have been too much, so I always end up failing. The lowest dose I've ever reached is 5 mgs, but the withdrawal symptoms were unbearable so I went back up to 10 mgs and eventually back to 15 mgs. I am 23 now and the fact that I take Paxil is closing off some important opportunities for me. I'm on 12.5 mgs at the moment--tapering from 2.
Avatar n tn If no MD answers you here, try the mental health forum. I wish you the best. I take 325 mg. of xanax daily and some xanax as needed.
