Avatar n tn What are you trying to check the saturated fat in? If you're eating packaged products, check the package label.
Avatar f tn Yes, they do contain cholesterol. That is your question. But cholesterol isn't one thing, it's a combination of different fats. Without cholesterol you couldn't manufacture hormones, and nothing would move through your system. Cholesterol is only a problem when it sticks to blood vessels. That happens when cholesterol oxidizes. The worst form is triglycerides, which is found mostly in our dies in the form of hydrogenated vegetable oils.
862235 tn?1336060295 Is salmon OK or should I be sticking to leaner fishes like cod? What are the benefits of the omega fatty acids vs the restricted fat intake? Also some salmonids like Atlantic salmon are obviously fattier than others like wild Pacific salmon is this something I should consider?
907968 tn?1292622204 peanuts are a fantastic food, but in actual fact, peanuts are not really nuts. I believe they are a member of the pea/bean family. I don't think they contain omega-3 but they contain a high level of omega-6 which is the lower of the omega's in fish but more important for blood vessels. There has been lots of research on peanuts and results have shown that they greatly reduce the risk of cardiac disease. They have other benefits too, it has been shown they reduce the risk of colon cancer.
333672 tn?1273792789 I also want to pose a question to all to think about - The brain is mostly fat but that fat is saturated so why do we need to eat Omega 3 fats which are polyunsaturated? I've been curious for a while about this but not found an answer. Thanks for the link though - its a great thought provoker this one.
Avatar n tn We know that omega-3 fatty acids lower levels of triglycerides, a type of fat in the bloodstream. Experts are not exactly sure how. Omega-3 fatty acids may also slow down the growth of plaques inthe arteries and prevent blood clots. There are a number of small studies that show that walnuts help lower cholesterol. One 2004 study of 58 adults with diabetes looked at the effects of eating a handful of walnuts each day in addition to a healthy diet.
Avatar m tn and may also help decrease the risk of type 2 diabetes. One type of polyunsaturated fat, omega-3 fatty acids, may be especially beneficial to your heart. Omega-3s, found in some types of fatty fish, appear to decrease the risk of coronary artery disease. They may also protect against irregular heartbeats and help lower blood pressure levels. Foods made up mostly of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats are liquid at room temperature, such as olive oil, safflower oil, peanut oil and corn oil.
1291107 tn?1272202031 this causes cholesterol that sticks in your arteries and when it thickens the blood cant get through therefore it thickens and clots forming a blockage, then a heart attack or stroke it if breaks off and travels in bloodstream, omega 3 is very healthy this is found in mackeral this is great for the heart
Avatar n tn They are also naturally lower in fat too. Most of the fats they do contain are unsaturated and ALWAYS cholesterol free. If you really want to save yourself, and I know you can :) you MUST do research. You should watch the movie Vegucated which is free on YouTube and Hulu. There's also a movie called Forks Over Knives which I highly recommend. Books you could read ... One I love is called Veganist by Kathy Fredton. I found that in a local library. Hope I helped.
Avatar f tn Eat avocados, salmon, walnuts and olive oil to ensure that you consume plenty of healthy fats, such as omega-3 fatty acids. These acids supply energy but benefit the health of your heart as well. Skip unhealthy saturated and trans fats found in fast food, frozen pizza and packaged, baked goods because they aren't nutritious sources of energy. They can actually slow you down and impact your performance. Certain foods will provide you with the vitamins and minerals you need to perform well.
Avatar n tn Is the only problem with flax seed that it goes rancid quickly or is there any other reason to avoid it. Is the problem only on treatment? If I'm not being treated and my liver is in bad shape is this a problem? I grind flax seeds and sprinkle in food for the omega 3 and never before heard that this could be a problem...now I'm getting nervous. I just did a quick search and didn't see anything. Thanks.
Avatar m tn ) does not have a high protein value with most calories coming from carbs and fat. Try to consume 100% whole grain breads and pastas though. If you are vegetarian you really must learn how to combine foods to optimize protein intake. It is simple nutritional science which will make a big difference in your life. Disregard this if not applicable to you. For your current weight you should be aiming at a minimum of 55 grams of protein daily.
Avatar f tn There is a recent book by Harvard Nutritionists called The Fertility Diet that recommends eating slowly digested carbohydrates like whole grains, beans, vegetables can enchance fertility. Eating food rich in omega-3 fatty acids and unsaturated fats, not trans fats improves fertility. Eating whole milk, whole yogourt, whole ice cream in moderation increases fertility while skim and low fat milk does the opposite. Do not exercise in the extreme.
Avatar m tn The role of fats in heart disease is an evolving opinion, but certainly most research hospitals suggest polyunsaturated fats are much healthier and in fact a necessary component to most people's diet. Omega 3 and 6 fish oils, for example, are prescribed universally to people with Cardiac Artery Disease, and fish oil is certainly a Poly oil. I haven't a clue about cashews, I'm a Hazelnut (Filbert) fan myself. They are delicious in salads.
Avatar m tn Douglass a combination of several vegetable oils that offers a nice balance of omega-3s, omega-6s––including Evening Primrose Oil––and omega-9s, plus coconut oil and a little bit of vitamin E. I recommend 2 to 3 tablespoons per day.
Avatar m tn Quite a complex topic this but at the same time an interesting one. Omega 3 isn't just one substance, Omega three are fatty acids just like Omega 6 fatty acids found in oils and meat etc. Omega 3 are EPA, DHA, and ALA . Some experts have said that the balance between Omega 6 fatty acids and Omega 3 is key, but just as many say this is nonsense. Omega 3 do have benefits, mainly reducing inflammation in the body, such as in the arteries or joints.
1655526 tn?1330655629 I know that omega 3 is really supposed to be good for the heart, but I get palps after I take them for 3 days, especially krill oil. I've read in this forum that others have also had adverse reactions to taking this supplement. So I wanted to put this poll out to see how omega 3 affects you. The first time I suspected krill oil, which is supposed to be the best omega 3, I used the process of elimination. Still not believing it I did it a second and third time.
Avatar f tn pasta), low fat and substitute dairy products (1% milk, low fat/fat free yogurts, low fat soy milk/soy yogurt), use plant oils, non trans-fat margarines, and eat a lot of fruits and vegetables. Eat daily high fiber breads and cereals (oatmeal). Make sure you eat 3 meals a day with snacks between and you will be able to maintain your weight. Thank you for your question.
Avatar m tn ve been on a very healthy diet with lower carbs, no sugar, more fiber, more unsaturated fats(especially Omega 3), limited saturated fat and completely cut out trans fats. About 85-90% of my diet is unprocessed whole foods that I cook myself. I put myself on this diet in the spring and have lost 40 pounds. I am 5'6 and weighed over 180 pounds. Now i'm down to 140 and still losing weight. This was all done without any exercise (I plan on starting that, just want to talk to a doc first).
Avatar n tn I think in general, increasing the amount of fat and protein in your diet (preferably unsaturated fat and lean protein), portion size, and carbohydrates, you will easily put on weight/bulk up. Unless you have some kind of underlying thyroid issue, I don't see why milkshakes and a larger diet wouldn't help you out. I doubt you are suffering from malnutrition, but if you are, remember it's important to see a doctor/nutritionist to see what your nutritional deficits are. Good Luck!
Avatar f tn Polyunsaturated fats can even lower your bad cholesterol! The main thing with fat is to eat unsaturated fats, like avocado, nuts, and olive oil. If you Google search "my plate cdc.gov" you will find lots of information about healthy eating. This page also talks about healthy vs. unhealthy fats. http://cholesterol.about.com/od/cholesterolnutrition101/f/highunsatfoods.
Avatar n tn They contain heart-healthy unsaturated fats and are high in calories. Unsaturated fats provide the best way to consume more calories. While carbohydrates and proteins contain only 4 calories per gram, fats contain 9 calories per gram. Nuts, seeds and seafood are other good sources of unsaturated fats. Eat pasta, bread and other baked goods made from whole grains. These contain a lot of calories and dietary fiber and nutrients.
Avatar f tn I have been reading a lot online about mast cell tumors, how to treat them, etc. I have decided to change my dogs diet to the Canine Cancer Diet... low carb, high fat, high protein, homecooked. I have already added fish oil supplement (human grade) I squeeze it out of the liquid capsule and the same for Vitamin E. First... I have read conflicting information about the types of Omegas some say you need 3 & 6, while others say not to Omega 6 because it can cause cancer to grow.
Avatar f tn You should be taking omega 3 in any case. Statins, by lowering cholesterol, also interfere with the absorption of fat soluble nutrients, which of course includes omega 3. The most important for the heart is EFA, which is found in largest amounts in fish oil, but flax and hemp oil are also very high in omega 3 oils. But omega 3 oils don't do the same thing as statins. Statins lower LDL cholesterol, the bad kind, whereas omega 3 oils provide the good kind of cholesterol, HDL.
1124887 tn?1313754891 They say exercise, alcohol on a daily basis (which I refuse), unsaturated fat and no trans fat (I eat lots of unsaturated fat and no trans fat). They also say quit smoking (I don't smoke) and weight loss (I'm not overweight). So it seems daily exercise is what's most beneficial. Maybe those changes just takes time? I know it's fairly easy to reduce total cholesterol but it's possibly harder to change the lipoproteins carrying them?
