Avatar f tn The genetic inheritance of asthma and/or a predisposition to it is complex. In essence, persons may be born with a genetic pattern favorable to the development of asthma but never exhibit the outward, clinical expression of it. I believe that description applies to your grandparents who actually did, in effect, genetically pass on the “asthma gene(s)” to your parents or, maybe just to one of your parents for a person with asthma need not get these genes from both parents.
1422615 tn?1334064234 When a couple has a boy or girl already and would like to add to their family without having multiple children in order to have the desired sex, genetic screening can help. The X and Y chromosomes determine if you will have a boy or girl. By testing the chromosomes of the embryo, we can know if you will have a boy or girl before you become pregnant. This allows couples to balance their family by using gender selection.
900689 tn?1248027886 As you mentioned, there are acquired, non-genetic causes (such as vitamin deficiencies and tumors) as well and other diseases (such as some mitochondrial diseases and multiple sclerosis) which can cause ataxia. Genetic testing results as well as other tests results, such as your MRI, will help your neurologist in making an accurate diagnosis. As you know, there is currently no cure or effective treatment for spinocerebellar ataxia.
Avatar f tn Recent studies In 2005, researchers at the Serono Genetics Institute (SGI) achieved a major milestone in identifying and creating a register of genes involved in Multiple Sclerosis (MS). For the first time in this disease area, researchers identified 80 genes involved in the inflammatory and neuro-degenerative pathways of MS, based on a 40% genome scan comparing the genetic profile of a total of 1,800 people with MS and healthy individuals in different populations.

Avatar f tn I'm looking for some information on my kidney stones, specifically any genetic conditions that predispose someone to get them chronically. I am a 21 year old male, and have had chronic stones since age 15. (at least 5 a year). I have changed my diet, exercise and hydration habits completely, yet the stones seem to be getting more frequent and painful. I recently found out that my great-uncle died of "brights disease" at age 25 after having chronic stones.
382218 tn?1341181487 6% had relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis, 9.4% primary progressive multiple sclerosis and 6% clinically isolated syndrome. Nearly 40% of our multiple sclerosis patients with disease duration >10 years (mean = 16.2 ± 5.3 years) remained with no or mild disability (Expanded Disability Status Scale [EDSS] 3). Also, about 30% of patients with relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis showed benign disease evolution (EDSS 3) more than 20 years (mean = 24.0 ± 3.3) after onset.
Avatar n tn You would need to talk to a genetic specialist to determine the inheritance. I would rather not speculate, myself. It is very possible that he does not have RP and I'm unclear how a retinal specialist is going to make the diagnosis if there were not any retinal findings seen by the optometrist - or were there findings and he did not mention them to you?
Avatar n tn Numerous autoimmune conditions have been associated w/ psychiatric conditions. Bipolar d/o is an hereditary condition & is also seen more often in people w/ multiple sclerosis & other disorders, including autoimmune d/o. Often autoimmune conditions show so many symptoms that people can look bipolar, with out being bipolar. That makes it very confusing.
