I read somewhere that it is helpful for liver problems so started taking it. I won't see my dr. for almost three months so can't ask him until then.

With the best will in the world, milk thistle won't make any difference. milk thistle may protect liver cells, particularly in alcoholics, but there is no scientific proof of this. The main thing is to be sure he is in the hands of the best possible medical team, and it sounds like he is getting good care. If that is the case you are doing everything you can. Good luck to you both.

1961140 tn?1450742312 I'm hoping, perhaps foolishly, the milk thistle extract will, over time, help the blood/serosanguinous fluid flow to and return from the lower limbs. I know silymarin has been clinical trial tested, but I'm unsure what strength extract they were using, and the results were ambigious, at least as I interpreted them. Some patients improved, some did not, but that could have been simply from abstaining from ingesting any hepatoxic subtances.
Avatar n tn My experience with milk thistle was a miracle. Before starting the hcv treatment hubby took milk thistle just for a month and it reduced his alt ast levels from above 150 to 65 and 60......Dnt take heavy dose just 400mg a day and if it dnt give any benefits it will also dnt harm.......it's very safe............

I have not had a eGFR under 65 since. Of course diet is a major factor as well. Basically if it tastes good you can't have it.
Avatar m tn milk thistle is very popular for patients with liver disease to take. I take it as well. I don’t know if it helps but I do know that it doesn’t hurt. Patients with early stages of cirrhosis normally don’t have any physical side effects. It’s the beginning of the final stage that symptoms will manifest. This is why having your annual physical is very important. The blood test will show right away if you are having problems. I’m really glad you were tested a year ago.

Avatar f tn I suggest talking to another vet and one with more knowledge and experience. In the meantime, start giving your dog some milk thistle, which may counteract some of the problems potentially caused by giving metacam - it will also help protect and heal any liver damage. Avatar f tn What does anyone know about milk thistle and/or Licorice Root for liver function? I've heard that in the beginning of the disease it can help. Not so in the end stages. Also, does anyone have any input regarding Noni juice?
Avatar m tn I have never had my liver tested in the past. As of two weeks ago, I began taking 2 capsules of milk thistle to try and help my liver out during these hard times. My questions are: Does milk thistle help? Is there anything else that I can take to help my liver? What kind of long term damage have I caused so far to my body? Also, I know that I am posting this on an addiction forum but please spare me the "you have to quite routine"... Thanks!!
Avatar n tn Talk with your doctor about this and they can run tests to make sure your liver is okay.

I do realize there are some bad herbs out there, and we have to be aware of them...as much as we are able...

Avatar n tn patients with viral hepatitis have been seen when alpha-lipoic acid, silymarin (milk-thistle extract), NAC and selenium were used. Taurine, indole-3 carbinol, the carotenoids, acetyl-L carnitine and natural forms of vitamin E are also powerful nutrients that can help protect the liver. All can be found in natural health stores. Ellagic acid — a nutrient found in most berries, especially raspberries — also protects the liver.

The current theory regarding mode of activity is that silymarin supports liver health in two major ways. First, it alters the outer cell membrane of hepatocytes (liver cells) in such a way as to prevent penetration of harmful substances into the interior of cells.
