2105146_tn?1334597383 Does anyone know if milk thistle is good, bad, or of no effect? I read somewhere that it is helpful for liver problems so started taking it. I won't see my dr. for almost three months so can't ask him until then.

Avatar_m_tn A recent study from Columbia University Medical Center on milk thistle gives those who are unsure about using herbal supplements for Hepatitis C reason to reconsider. by Nicole Cutler, L.Ac. An estimated four to five million Americans are chronically infected with the Hepatitis C virus (HCV). While approximately half of those with HCV are able to clear it from their liver with the current standard of treatment, the remaining fifty percent must protect their liver from this virus.
Avatar_n_tn It seems he has ascites ( fluid build up) and encepalothopy (confusion) caused by cirrhosis. With the best will in the world, milk thistle won't make any difference. Milk thistle may protect liver cells, particularly in alcoholics, but there is no scientific proof of this. The main thing is to be sure he is in the hands of the best possible medical team, and it sounds like he is getting good care. If that is the case you are doing everything you can. Good luck to you both.
10805050_tn?1420939120 My Liver Center Pharmacologist recommended I suspend the Supplementation of Milk Thistle while on my 24 week course of Harvoni. He said it can interfere with the chemical actions of the Harvoni. For whatever that's worth to anyone..... Wishing everyone the best, and thanks so much for so many who responded and added to my "Harvoni Progress" Post...you guys are great!
Avatar_n_tn What level of liver damage do you have? He might be continuing for possible reversal effects.. Milk thistle is good, but not on tx.. And there are alot of other supplements that you need to take in conjuction.. It is the cocktail of vitamins and supplements that do the good.
1961140_tn?1450742312 I'm hoping, perhaps foolishly, the milk thistle extract will, over time, help the blood/serosanguinous fluid flow to and return from the lower limbs. I know silymarin has been clinical trial tested, but I'm unsure what strength extract they were using, and the results were ambigious, at least as I interpreted them. Some patients improved, some did not, but that could have been simply from abstaining from ingesting any hepatoxic subtances.
Avatar_n_tn My experience with milk thistle was a miracle. Before starting the hcv treatment hubby took milk thistle just for a month and it reduced his alt ast levels from above 150 to 65 and 60......Dnt take heavy dose just 400mg a day and if it dnt give any benefits it will also dnt harm.......it's very safe............

Is it okay to take milk thistle with interferon injections? A Answer You definitely can - and should - take milk thistle if you're being treated with interferon (for chronic hepatitis B or C, I assume). Avatar_m_tn Jaundice is the result of liver damage, and your vet may want to advise a suitable protective treatment for this, such as Milk Thistle.
Avatar_f_tn I take Vitamin D3, B-12 and 6, Vitamin C, Milk Thistle, and Lisinopril. I have not had a eGFR under 65 since. Of course diet is a major factor as well. Basically if it tastes good you can't have it.
Avatar_m_tn Milk thistle is very popular for patients with liver disease to take. I take it as well. I don’t know if it helps but I do know that it doesn’t hurt. Patients with early stages of cirrhosis normally don’t have any physical side effects. It’s the beginning of the final stage that symptoms will manifest. This is why having your annual physical is very important. The blood test will show right away if you are having problems. I’m really glad you were tested a year ago.

Avatar_f_tn I suggest talking to another vet and one with more knowledge and experience. In the meantime, start giving your dog some Milk Thistle, which may counteract some of the problems potentially caused by giving metacam - it will also help protect and heal any liver damage. If you join our User group, please start a post using your dog's name and give a brief history, what you are now feeding and any blood level results you have.
Avatar_f_tn 20 when diagnosed in may she was put on KD dried and wet food she had few symptoms apart from occasional vomiting which we thought was just a sensitive tummy which she pretty much always had, she is on half maalox tab ,my vet is also my boss and when he sent her recent bloods to the lab and it came back with creatinine levels so high he asked the opinion of the pathologists re IV therapy and they said it wouldnt make much difference now because of her levels and it was just care plan, the ant si
Avatar_n_tn another reason not to leap into debilitating tx unless you absolutely have to i see in your subject there about milk thistle i take 2000 mgs concentrated every day, who knows if it is doing anything or not ... hey maybe that is the source of my stomach problems??? anybody???
Avatar_f_tn What does anyone know about Milk Thistle and/or Licorice Root for liver function? I've heard that in the beginning of the disease it can help. Not so in the end stages. Also, does anyone have any input regarding Noni juice?
Avatar_m_tn I have never had my liver tested in the past. As of two weeks ago, I began taking 2 capsules of milk thistle to try and help my liver out during these hard times. My questions are: Does milk thistle help? Is there anything else that I can take to help my liver? What kind of long term damage have I caused so far to my body? Also, I know that I am posting this on an addiction forum but please spare me the "you have to quite routine"... Thanks!!
Avatar_n_tn Talk with your doctor about this and they can run tests to make sure your liver is okay.
Avatar_n_tn but you have to consult experts and know what you are doing...millions take milk thistle for example, and have reported good results...I can't take milk thistle, (allergic) but I do take others and I have consistetly had good labs having had this disease for 30 years, not saying it's all due to my regimen, but I know it's helped with my symptoms and possibly inflammation... I do realize there are some bad herbs out there, and we have to be aware of them...as much as we are able...
Avatar_m_tn Milk Thistle may well help your dog, as it is a safe supportive herb for the liver in both dogs and humans. The liver does most of the processing of toxins, from life in general and from medications too. Giving the liver some support may reduce stress on kidneys also. There is some information here: http://www.liversupport.com/can-milk-thistle-help-your-pet/ There is more info. on this site, including suggested dosage: http://nextgendog.
Avatar_n_tn patients with viral hepatitis have been seen when alpha-lipoic acid, silymarin (milk-thistle extract), NAC and selenium were used. Taurine, indole-3 carbinol, the carotenoids, acetyl-L carnitine and natural forms of vitamin E are also powerful nutrients that can help protect the liver. All can be found in natural health stores. Ellagic acid — a nutrient found in most berries, especially raspberries — also protects the liver.
Avatar_m_tn 4, still normal range but it must stay always about the same because big differences mean there has been kidneys damage, there are no tests to see kidneys damage but only kidney function worsening after the damage) alt, platlets little higher but they were already well within normal ranges no more stomach bloats (air in the stomach) or frequent stool due to nitazoxanide treatment i will restart as soon as i receive the pills, probably next week because i think i will be able to tollerate higher

1028452_tn?1398781730 The spice has both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects that may be useful in combating a variety of diseases. MILK THISTLE (80% Standardized Silymarin) Research on milk thistle and it's components appears to be growing. The current theory regarding mode of activity is that silymarin supports liver health in two major ways. First, it alters the outer cell membrane of hepatocytes (liver cells) in such a way as to prevent penetration of harmful substances into the interior of cells.
