Avatar f tn Hello all, I was recently diagnosed with PCOS, and I would just like to say thank you to everyone, I feel so much better reading everyone's stories and experiences, it lets me know I'm not alone. While I have many nasty symptoms from PCOS, my thinning/balding hair seems to be a big problem. I have probably lost almost half my hair at this point (almost all of it from the top of my head and hairline).
Avatar n tn Could Metformin cause thinning or hair loss? I started two Metformin 500 mg a day last May. Went on a locarb, no processed foods or alcohol diet. Lost 30#'s. End of August, switched to one Metformin ER 500 mg a day cause my A1C went from 7.4 down to 5.2 in 3 1/2 months. I have thought of a vitamin or iron deficiency, but I eat a lot of healthy foods and haven't lost weight beyond the 30#'S I lost last summer. I read that some people on here think Victoza caused their hair loss.
Avatar f tn has any1 tried metformin does it really help weight loss and stop excess facial hair?
Avatar f tn ve suffered from painful ovarian cysts, had several miscarriages, male hair growth on the face and chest, hair loss, depression, mood swings, high cholesterol, chronic anxiety, and high blood pressure. I have been told by an Enternal Medical Specialist that my only hope of losing weight is Gastric Bypass, which my insurance won't cover because I do not have diabetes. I don' t know what to do anymore. This weight is destroying me mentally, physically, and emotionally.
Avatar m tn i have all the symptons the majorrr weight gain, excess hair growth, acne, and thinning hair. Will metformin help all my symptoms?
Avatar n tn ) Me doctor prescribed metformin 500 mg 3 times a day. He told me that it will be easier for me to loose weight. Problem is that I am gaining weight, I cut my carbs and calories intake and walking for 1 hour 3 times a week, but still gaining weight. Does that mean metformin is not working for me ?
Avatar n tn I have PCOS too and I have been put on Metformin which helps with weight loss. People with PCOS have a higher insulin levels which decreases your female hormones and increases the male hormones which cause the hair growth and scattered periods. These are things that you know about but with increased insulin levels your body does not process the food correctly and tends to hold onto it which is why I gained weight! Metformin is for glucose patients and that is why it helps PCOS patients.
393893 tn?1283551230 ) I would definitely call your doctor and maybe a pharmacist to see what the hair loss is about. Now, I did experience some hair loss with PCOS, though, so is it possible that could be it? If you do decide to start taking the Metformin again, I would start at a very low dose and up the does every week or two.
Avatar f tn I am a young female with PCOS. The initial complaint that I brought to my doctor was experiencing hair growth on my face, excess hair growth on my arms/legs/bikini, and hair loss on my head. I've since begun laser hair removal on my face and arms, but I am about 4 treatments in (24 wks) and am not noticing results. It is becoming more and more difficult to hold my head high- many days I don't even want to be seen in public.
Avatar f tn I have stopped taking Metformin as I developed serious side affects from it, one of them is hair loss. I was supposed to take 3000 mg per day but was taking 1000 for one wk. and 2000 for the second week to avoid side effects but looks I just couldn't handle the higher dosage... I am not sure if PCOS has anything to do with HAIR LOSS but every time I take a shower, I get depressed b/c the amount of hair I loose is just heart breaking.
Avatar f tn Hi, it depends on the treatment I guess, but I don't think you should expect any weight gain. Metformin will help with weight loss - I don't have any weight to shed, but Met really helps with appetite and maintainance. I also find Yasmin (BCP) harmless in this respect: I gain weight very easily usually and struggle to maintain it off, but Yasmin never caused any problems in this respect, I'd say on the contrary.
Avatar n tn What I think you should ask your doctor for is a recommendation to a nutrionist if weight loss is your main goal and reason for taking metformin. Also find out why you were prescribed metformin (ie was it to control your menstrual cyle, maintain or help with the PCOS, help you acheive a pregnancy in the long run, or for another health reason like diabetes, etc).
1408380 tn?1281388562 There is a med that my dr told me I can take for the hair growth to balance out my hormones (I forgot what its called) but you have to plan on taking it for the rest of your life. And I heard theres a chance it can get worse if you stop taking it. I would start it if I wasnt ttc. You should talk to your regular dr about it though and see what they can do good luck!
Avatar m tn In some causing excess hair growth on the body or thinning of the scalp hair, male pattern baldness. So far the medications have worked for me, but it is important to discuss it with your doctor. Although there is no cure, it can be managed. Weight loss has also helped me. It's tougher to lose with PCOS, but possible.
Avatar f tn you can by a self bleacher at your local walmart for $5 it always works for me, it takes the colour out and makes the hair really soft.........As for the hair loss I have yet to find a solution.. i attend a highschool which has very critical people there so i have resulted to wearing my hair curly and i have to pin it to cover the bald spot we arent allowed to wear hats or i would do that very day!
Avatar n tn There is also a herbal supplement called biotin (its a type of vitamin B) that is really helpful for the hair loss. I take 5000 MCG a day and it does wonders. Also there is shampoo and conditioner with biotin in it for hair loss. Its a bit pricier than like your regular drugstore stuff, but I think its worth it too. You can check them out here: http://www.jason-natural.com/products/thin_to_thick.php I hope that maybe this has helped. Good luck!
Avatar f tn I was on metformin 1500mg for 6 months which helped me lose weight (25 pounds) and I got pregnant naturally which I believe is due to metformin and the weight loss because I had been trying for almost 2 years with no success. Yes metformin is not easy to take, I have a very very hard time with it, many side effects and I even took it durring my first trimester along with my bad morning sickness (never missing a dose) now that is dedication!
Avatar f tn I am on spironolactone for the hair loss. My gyn. says that I show classic symptoms of PCOS (weight gain, hair loss, strange hair growth). I go to my primary tomorrow and I wanted to ask about my thyroid functions. He did lab work in October but he didn't do the T3. TSH 1.3 (normal range .3-4) Free T4 .9 (normal range .6-1.6) Cortisol AM 23.1 (normal range 6.7-22.
Avatar f tn I have been on metformin for about 4 years. I was overweight and finally joined a weight loss group (TOPS). I managed to lose about 36 lbs. Having lost the weight I can now manage my diabetes with my diet. Since I now longer take Metformin I am having trouble losing the last 20 lbs I need to lose. Is there a connection between weight loss and taking Metformin. Has anyone else experienced this?
Avatar m tn At the time, being emotionally stunned by the whole storm of news, I agreed and have been taking 2,000 mg of Metformin daily along with Genress Fe birth control. The birth control and Metformin have been working to keep me in balance, but the Metformin gets me sick on and off in not so tolerable ways. I never imagined at 20 I would have to deal with this and the thought of, potentially, having severe fertility issues from it when I do plan on a child is heart breaking.
245020 tn?1209657943 Well are you on Metformin for diabetes or PCOS? Not that it matters, but just wondering. I take 1000mg of Metformin a day. Metformin will upset your stomach, cause diarrhea, etc. but that only lasts a couple weeks. I'm currently in my 2nd month of taking Metformin and I'm taking a pregnancy test at the end of the week! Did your doctor not explain the side effects? Upset stomach is a normal side effect. Check out soulcysters (dot) net and click on their Metformin forum.
557911 tn?1225980644 m sure other people on here would agree) and experienced hair loss. Then I tried letrazole (similar drug to clomid) for one month before deciding to move on to ivf. I didn't get the results that I wanted, but I didn't have any weird side effects on it either! Good luck.
