The best treatment would be to correct the A-fib with digoxin or another specific anti-dysrrythmic or a pacemaker, but if this is not possible, prevention of blood clots is essential because, even a tiny one can cause a pulmonary embolism (clot in the lung) or a stroke. My husband has Atrial Fibrillation (chronic) and is on Coumadin Therapy. He is scheduled for a hernia repair (inguinal) outpatient surgery and is very anxious about a blood clot after surgery as he has had friends who have died from blood clots. Is there data available regarding this post-operative complication that would decrease his anxiety? He has been told to stop his Coumadin 5 days prior to the surgery and restart it after surgery.
Currently I am on Tarka, Niaspan and Coumadin for HTN and atrial fibrillation. On 1/11, Sectral was added to my cardiac med profile to aid in arrythmia control.
On 1/26 I started Lovenox prior to a colonoscopy. These are the only two meds changed, with all other meds longstanding.
On 12/1 I had a complete metabolic profile drawn for a routine endocrinology follow up and LFTs then were ALT 17 and AST 18.

I am not a doctor but I have not heard of afib described that way and atrial contractions are not a danger where afib could be due to possible blood clots. Does your daughter have an unusually high heart rate keeping in mind children's heart rates tend to be more elevated than adults. I have been in atrial flutter for 2 1/2 months now. I am 74, have had 3 ht attacks, angioplasty, double by-pass surgery and now am waiting for an ablation. Did all of you have to be on coumadin and get 4 protimes 2 to 3 or above for 4 weeks before the procedure? I get a couple weeks in, and then I drop below 2 and have to start my weeks over again. It has never converted for one minute since the flutter has started.

I have never used these vitamins/antioxidants/supplements in my patients of atrial fibrillation and there’s no evidence to support their use in atrial fibrillation and hence I don’t think they’ll be able to help you and my sincere suggestion is to follow your doctors’ advice and not to ingest these vitamins for there’s no scientific back up to support they can play any role in preventing the episodes of Atrial fibrillation.

And you have a fast heart rate when you are in atrial fibrillation and a slow heart rate when you are not in atrial fibrillation. This is called tachy-brady syndrome.
You had an AV node ablation procedure that destroyed the AV node in your heart.
You have a problem with the natural pacemaker of the heart (AV or SA node).
You take a medicine for atrial fibrillation that slows your heart rate too much.
You may have runs of AF, you may have a lot of PACs (premature atrial beats) which is very common in the setting of having atrial fibrillation. You may also have PVCs or other arrhythmias.
An alternative (which possibly is better) is to ask for a 24 hour monitoring and note in the log if you get irregular heart beats.
You may also try to detect your pulse when the blood pressure monitor is marking irregular heart rhythm. Atrial fibrillation is fairly easy to recognize.

I have a long history of occassional palpitations (PACs), which have become more frequent and occur most days in recent months, also with occasional episodes of atrial fibrillation. My EKG is normal. My recent annual echo shows, for the first time, a finding of mild to moderate anteroseptal and mild mid-anterior hypokinesis. EF is 72%, other measures are within normal, except mild LAE (4.1 cm) and mild MR, TR, PR regurgitation.
Is it possible to have both atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter? I am on the drug flecainide and wonder if this is safe.
My brother, in his 50's, had atrial fibrillation and bowel problems. He went on a gluten free diet and the atrial fibrillation stopped and his bowels are now perfect and he feels better than ever. Atrial activity is not clear. In that instant, I cannot exclude atrial fibrillation although on limited data I do suspect there may be a definitive P wave morphology.
Summary: predominant rhythm is sinus with occasional eotopic events. cannot exclude a brief episode of paroxysmal fibrillation. No patient diryr submitted with this recording.
How serious is this. I am sooo scared. I have to wait 1 month for appointment. What kind of tests will the cardiologist do?
Atrial fibrillation alone does not usually cause swelling in the hands, feet, and abdomen. The question you need to ask the doctor is does he have heart failure and if he doesn't what is causing the swelling. Without knowing the results of his echo or blood tests, I can't tell you if he has heart failure.
Anxiety can is caused by atrial fibrillation and sometimes people that are anxious at baseline become more anxious with atrial fibrillation.
