I still eat red meat but not too often but I guess I must completely eliminate it from my diet. I will definitely ask my doctor if he could put me on a low dose of Statin for starters. I have no problems or side effects . My question is lovastatin less effective then other of the same and if not why is it not used often. My engineering background comes out if I d not have proper data.

Avatar m tn yes but if te liver has no damage it is better to wait because there is a new interferon called lambda, more potent with almost no sides or very very mild, and some new drugs like replicor and others in the meantime you can work on increasing vitamin d more than 50ng/ml and decreasing cholesterol as much as possible (ldl<70mg/dl) becuase cholestero is used by the virus (monacolins from red yeast rice might be the less sides better way to lower cholesterol).

I'm on Meclizine daily (I can take up to 150 mg daily, but I only take 25 to 50 mg daily) and 81 mg aspirin. I've had two EKG's, one Echo test, my MRI is on Monday, Jan 9th and a Bilateral Carotid Ultrasound, Jan 26th. I am suppose to start Lipitor.

Avatar n tn In answer to your question, my Doc back in the States took me off Lipitor, because it caused my CPKs to go over 500, and gave me the classic muscles aches. I do not have a Doc down here. Even though red yeast rice is a natural statin, I don't react to it. Currently I am taking 600 mg of red yeast rice twice a day. What do you think of this strategy: Increase red yeast rice to three 600 mg/day and clean up my diet. I had been ingesting probably somewhat over 200 mg of cholesterol per day.

I just learned that there is an increased risk of liver damage when using this supplement while consuming alcohol. Needless to say I have been doing this for the last 3 years. Wanted to see if I should be concerned and also if I should stop using the supplements.

Mine was so high a few years back that the doctor had prescribed pills...which he said may or may not work as mine is inherited ( and yes, there is such a thing ). I ended up getting pregnant ( so refused the pills just in case ) and started craving avocados. Went back a few times for blood tests ( as is typical when prego ) and my LDL had dropped...by a lot!
