I have been taking Lipitor 20 mg for several months to reduce my cholesterol level. I usually have a beer before and a couple glasses of wine with my dinner. Can Lipitor interfere with my liver's ability to remove alcohol from my system? What is the interaction between the liver's ability to remove alcohol and cholesterol at the same time?
” Unfortunately, I was not able to find any “official” definition of what a “substantial quantity of alcohol” means either from the FDA or Pfizer, the drug company that sells Lipitor. One of the side effects of Lipitor is a slight chance of liver damage.
including moderate( depending upon your definition) drinking. 3-4 beers or mixed drinks, 3-4 days out of the week. My doctor just put me on Lipitor( 10mg) and my level went to 150 in just two months. Here is the rub...he didn't realize how much I drink and now tells me I have to cut way back to protect my liver. My obvious question is..how real is the conection between Lipitor, drinking and liver damage? Are there any real guidelines on how much I can drink ? Also..
I'm a 41 year old male with a 82 ALT. I started taking lipitor 30 days ago, new test results today show an 87 on my ALT. I am a fairly heavy drinker(6-8 Beer) 2-3 days a week, but cutting that back hard now. I had a hepatitis vacine to enter military health care in 1984 and never take Tylenol. 1) Should the high ALT, when combined with the other results concern me greatly? 2) Does this suggest damage or the initiation of damage and can the liver repair damaged tissues with time.
Can you drink beer with high cholesterol and taking lipitor without damaging my kidneys or liver
About a month ago my liver function readings were elevated, so my Doctor took me off Lipitor to see if it was the Lipitor or alcohol consumption causing them to be high. He told me to come back in one month to be tested again. Even without the Lipitor, they went up some to 74 AST and 142 ALT. Now he wants me to go to get a GI Specialist. I asked if this was for more testing, he just said no, but they would be better off determining what medication you should be on.
But my EKG is fine. I take Lipitor (10mg once a day), Toprol (50 mg twice a day), HCTZ (25mg once a day), and Wellbutrin XL (150 mg once a day). I have been diagnosed with high blood pressure and high cholesterol. My cholesterol is under control but my blood pressure sometimes spikes. I just having been feeling like myself and I'm getting worried that something's going on that is hidden. Do you have any ideas what might be going on?
I have been previously diagnosed with a fatty liver and have had elevated ALT/SGPT levels since 2002, on my last Dr's visit they drew blood and it was 58, it has dropped but I am concerned with it. I do drink 2-4 beers a night, have high cholesterol and take cholesterol medicine and have htn along with medicine that I take for that. What do you think is the real reason for the elevated liver enzymes?
I have been on statins from the age of 39 from one Med to another because my numbers would not come all the way down to normal I got a new Dr last year and he changed all my meds, started with lipitor 40mg vit d 50.000 units a weeks allopurinol.
After seven days on Lipitor 10 mg (lowest dose) my TC dropped from 190 to 160; LDL from 120 to 100; Tri's from 150 to 115. HDL dropped from 36 to 34 (both in my range) but the statins really don't do much for HDL. Liver enzymes still OK. I hope my profile continues to improve -- my target is LDL below 80 -- but if not, I'll consider upping the Lipitor to 20 mg/day.
No I don't have hep c I have been taken statins for four years and I got a new Dr last year he changed all meds around he put me on 40 mg lipitor 200mg fenofibrate allopurinol 300 mg lisinopril 10mg. Vtd2 50.000 unit a week he did this 7/11 so I went for blood work in 10/11 and f/up with mid Oct.
It appears to be a side affect from all the laser treatments he had. The doctor prescribed Hydromet syrup to help with the cough. He is also taking 80 mgs of Lipitor. He enjoys having a few beers a day and finds he cannot finish one without stomach pains. What is giving him the pain? Is it Hydromet syrup or the Lipitor?
He takes 10mg Lipitor every day to control his cholesterol. He drinks beer occasionally, maybe two beers every two weeks. Lately I have noticed his sperm is very low during sex. It seems to take him longer to ejaculate and then sometimes there is very little sperm. Also he seems to have a pained look on his face during ejaculation. He will not talk about this and seems to think it is nothing but I am concerned. He doesn't like to go to the doctor. Can you tell me what the possibilities are?
During the past 6 months I have significantly curtailed my drinking to only beer, and no more than a few beers a week. I take Lipitor, BP meds, and Ambien. For the last several months, I have been had the following symptoms: Daily sore throat ...
Saturday and Sunday before the Monday morning test I did intense yoga workout and on Friday and Saturday was drinking heavily (beer and tequila). Would this possibly cause the trace of occult blood in the urine analysis (the reference range was reported as negative). The doctor tested me a few days later and there was no trace of occult blood in the urine. I had not been working out or drinking. Should I be concerned? All my blood workup was normal and I am healthly.

HE is and has been on Lipitor. Could this be the cause? He is over weight and does drink beer pretty often. Also, his triglycerides are 243, hdl 39, testosterone 223,glucose 104,eos 9 & eos absolute 0.6. He see the endocrinologist next week to go over the bloodwork. Can you shed some light on this?
Your tri's seem a little high so maybe cut down on the simple sugars or drop the alcohol to one drink or maybe switch from beer to wine if relevant. Personally, I would not take Niacin with a TC of 130 and in fact I'm quite jealous of your numbers. They are almost as good as mine and I'm Lipitor!
I have had high cholesterol for years and take Lipitor. The elevated liver enzymes were found during routine bloodwork. Since then I have had an ultrasound of the liver, gallbladder and pancreas. I have also had a CAT scan and a "scope" . The ultrasound found nothing. The CAT scan showed enlarged bile ducts. They suspected a gallstone or two.
(Total used to be 269 now total is 198) He looked mostly at the triglyceride, which I have gotten down to 117. So he took me off the 10mg Pravochol and put me on 10mg Lipitor. The Lipitor I then cut into half and take only 5mg a day. That way the cost is way down for the month. My choleserol is still holding at the same level. But with the decrease you have to be careful to watch your diet and to exercise. Sounds like you could also ask about Lipitor.
Continued to have liver tests re-taken every 6-8 wks. following, and they were still slightly elevated, so stopped Lipitor (for cholesterol & tryglicerides) and Premain (hysterectomy abt. 6 yrs. ago for endrometriosis). Stopped the Rebif last July and Premarin & Lipitor last Sept. Since I've stopped taking everything (including Tylenol) they've still been rising. Last blood test in Feb. This week I had another round of tests and everything's suddenly REALLY out of whack.
My father, who's in his 70's, my height, weight was told he had fatty liver 10 years ago and he has high triglicerides and on Lipitor. My mother's has wheat allergy, high blood pressure and high cholesterol and on Lipitor. Her brother just passed away at 66 with liver failure attributed to alcohol, but his wife indicated he didn't drink hard liquor or have more than a couple of beers per days though most days; he had inflamated legs which was treated for diabetes.

Hi, Im 28 years old, 4 months ago I poked myself with a glass sliver from a newcastle beer bottle (which is very small and fine glass) in the left jugular at that time it was night time and I couldnt tell if it went all the way in. I started receiving headaches so I got checked out via MRI and catscan on the head and the neck. They were no findings of glass. So I carried on...
I am tired of drinking 18 to twenty beers in the time that I'm awake just so I can sleep! Tired of waking up with leg cramps, tired of being in pain from my right hip(shattered right femur has caused the hip to deteriorate), left knee(struck by an automobile last Nov.) stomach(66% of it surgically removed due to perforated ulcers), abdomen(hiatel hernia), and very afraid of another heart attack( four near fatal ones last year).

The rash is a cluster of red bumps and most concentrations of them are about 3-5 inches in diameter. The rash itches all over very intensely when I drink alcohol. After half a beer it starts and it is unbearable. This rash is very unsightly and I feel like a freak. I am single and I am never going to find a woman with this ailment. This started 2 months ago and has gotten progressively worse. QUESTIONS: What is causing this?
I take 1 tablet of 25mg Toprol-XL per day for high blood pressure which started about the same time as the palpitations. I take 10mg of Lipitor for high cholesterol. I take 2 tablets of magnesium per day that is supposed to control the palpitations-- but has not so I'm going to stop taking them when I finish the bottle. I take ArthX which is a dietary supplement glucosamine 750mg and chondroitin 600mg per for arthritic knees. I'm at my wit's end.
Nothing has been found, but my blood test indicated that my liver functions were worse 170-51 and 264-50. I do drink. Approximately 2-3 beers a day. Some days more and some days none at all. I'm going for a abdominal CT in 2 days. Do these elevated funtions mean I have liver disease or cirrosis?
Not a heavy drinker at all - more like moderate -- one to two glasses of wine at night, or maybe a beer with dinner. Occasionnal rum and coke, but still have same bottle purchased in October. Seems pronounded on my left side (yes, I know liver is on right side), especially early morning hours. No jaundice. Not a drug user. Married and monogamous for 16 years.
