Avatar n tn Why the weight gain on these anit d's is it because you are so relaxed? Does Prozac have the same effect? I know 3 people on Prozac and they are skinny......I don't want to gain weight.
415867 tn?1323365503 Newer antidepressants don’t have the same side effect. While Paxil and Zoloft do cause some weight gain, other SSRIs, like Prozac, Celexa and Lexapro, don’t. For Paxil and Zoloft, the weight gain can add up to five to 40 pounds a year. Some people do experience weight gain with Lexapro or Celexa, but most don’t. In this case, it is not a surprise to have idiosyncratic responses, since the chemical structure of all the SSRIs is so similar.
Avatar f tn My old psysician did tell me about the weight gain with paxil so I could not do it, I tried but my anxiety was so high about the weight gain.. Its your choice and you really don't know which was is going to be the best for you but my advice would be to listen to your doctor. If that doesn't work then you can always try something else. I am in the process to switching to Lexapro and I am discouraged because i'm also very tired, your body doesn't get used to it?
Avatar f tn SSRIs are notorious for weight gain, but Prozac has less of a weight gain potential (compared to say Paxil). Your weight gain may be natural - over the course of 20 years. Or it may be the result of the Prozac. But 2-3 pounds per year to gain from an SSRI is not very much. I was on Lexapro for 2-3 years and gained nearly 40 pounds in that time.
Avatar m tn ll have to go through getting off Paxil after such a long period of use. Prozac is said to not have the weight gain problem, but if your problem is anxiety, Prozac probably won't be as good. No way of knowing, but that's generally true. Lexapro also is known for fewer side effects, but it has its effects and it might not work for you and it too can cause weight gain. The question is, do you still need the Paxil after 10 years?
1781134 tn?1315774324 Hi Prozac for me has been great after switching to it from Effexor the only problem I have had with it is the weight gain which after now being on Prozac for 12months is getting to me so going to go and see my doctor and see what he can do.
Avatar n tn Wellbutrin is for depression, not anxiety, and as such can be stimulating. Drugs like Effexor are for both, but all can cause weight gain. You won't know until you try. The least problematic are probably Prozac, and then Lexapro, but even Lexapro has been known to cause significant weight gain and Prozac isn't usually that great for anxiety, but who knows? They're weird, these drugs, and affect everyone differently.
Avatar n tn My psychiatrist has just added Zyprexa to take with Prozac as the Prozac is not working like it used to work.I'm worried about the weight gain with Zyprexa, is there something else that could be used with the Prozac instead? Also until now I've also been taking 1 mg. Ativan in the morning and 1 mg Ativan before bed. Is it safe to use Ativan with the Zyprexa?
Avatar f tn m on Celexa now but am wondering if maybe Lexapro would be better since anxiety is my biggest concern. Has anyone had suggest with Lexapro. Also does Lexapro cause weight gain like Celexa?
Avatar m tn I am on Prozac now and have not experienced the numbness or weight gain (it actually can help with weight loss), so maybe you should like you said, go back on that. Good luck!
Avatar n tn I am a survivor of an abusive marriage of 28 years and a major heart attack. The doctor insists that I must stay on antidepressants for the rest of my life. I gained 40 pounds while taking Zoloft and yet I can't cope without some sort of medication nor can I cope with this weight gain. I have always prided myself in looking nice. I have just switched to Wellbutrin XL because I heard it doesn't cause that weight gain that Zoloft does...
Avatar m tn Hi: I have general anxiety with a tendency towards social anxiety. I used to have panic attacks but haven't had one in a couple years. I also suffer with depression. What drug has helped you? I am now taking Klonopin for the anxiety and Prozac for depression. I would like to cut the Klonopin or at least cut down (now taking 1 mg/day). The Prozac isn't helping my depression at all and I have given it months to work.
Avatar f tn How long have you been taking Lexapro? Some meds do cause ringing to become worse so I would suggest you talk to your doctor if the problem presists and maybe change to another med.
Avatar m tn I have taken both but effexor was harder to taper off of. I know they cause a slight weight gain, if you are exercising and watching calories that isn't a problem. I too struggle with all this but I am just too hyper and the brain moves too fast if I am not taking one.
Avatar n tn Oh, and I went back on the Lexapro at a low dose, only half a day. Is it less likely I'd gain weight on a lesser dosage or does it not work that way?
Avatar m tn Yes, prozac is an ssri but there is no weight gain and it is easy to stop. The other is wellbutrin, but it is not as effective, but may be enough for what you describe.
Avatar n tn m on my third month of Lexapro, and I was really worried that it might cause me to gain weight because I gain weight really easily. But thankfully I haven't even gained one pound. Good luck with it, it has really seemed to help me.
Avatar f tn I was wondering, at what dosage did you notice a gain or loss of weight? I've read about people either gaining or losing weight, but no one says what dosage they're on. I'm taking 25mg right now and the doc and I were talking of moving me to 50mg. Standing at a whopping 5ft, I of course worry about the weight gain.
Avatar m tn I was first treated with Pamelor, and it worked perfectly with the exception of side effects (weight gain, dry mouth). I was then moved onto Prozac a decade later. Over the years my doctor has tried various other meds. I have kept a journal, and for some reason all ssnri class drugs make my depression horrifically worse;that is, a sense of dread and panic set in that is dark and horribly foreboding.
Avatar n tn First I took Lexapro then Cymbalta and now Zoloft. My doctor keeps changing my meds because of the weight gain and every change only makes it worse. This latest change has caused me to gain about a pound a day. Since Thursday I have gained three more pounds and have been eating next to nothing. I finally convinced my doctor that I am not pigging out all day and she ha ordered a thyroid test. I'm so scared that I'm going to die from this, it's uncontrollable.
Avatar f tn I started 5 mg of Prozac 10 days ago for anxiety. Lexapro always did well for me except that I would gain weight (a lot) and feel like a zombie even at 5 mg. No other noticeable side effects. So the doctor switched me to Prozac and these first 10 days have been h*ll. I am anxious and weepy and have more anger in me. My sleep is messed up (waking up in the middle of the night for an hour or two then falling back asleep). I feel very jittery and on edge all the time.
Avatar f tn Effexor, Prozac, Lexapro, etc. Often the gain was not instant, like with the older generation of meds. Took a year for one to put 50 lbs on me in a few months. I also have been on Wellbutrin. It didn't help with depression, and increased anxiety to point where I had painful muscle spasms. At 74, and after anal cancer treatment, the really awful side effect is non stop diarrhea, which almost landed me in the hospital in one case.
Avatar f tn I actually asked my pdoc(psychiatrist) about Paxil, since I got frequent anxiety, he said no faster then I could blink. He said that there were many other drugs and combination of drugs that can work better with less side effects, such as feeling disjointed, overly tired and low motivation. You are already on a pretty strong benzo as well. If you don't have a psychiatrist, do get one. you can't get a proper diagnosis without a good consult.
Avatar f tn Yes, I took prozac for a while and I looked like I swallowed a wheelie bin,I put the weight on,but that all changed when the doc put me on valium to help with my anxiety. It worked well and helped me sleep with no weight gain.Prozac also cause a huge drop in sexual desire/performance.
Avatar f tn I remember reading in a book called "The Hormone Connection" that certain antidepressants, such as Prozac, can suppress thyroid function. So it's possible that if Lexapro is also an SSRI like Prozac, it may indeed be messing with your thyroid function. I was on Prozac for a few months following my divorce a few years ago, and like you I was always thin, but gained quite a bit of weight on the Prozac.
Avatar f tn Have taken paxil, celexa, effexor, xanax, and lexapro through the years but experienced weight gain of at least 40 lbs. My OB/GYN helped wean me off the meds this past spring but within the last month I have again started experiencing severe anxiety with bouts of depression. Family doc started me on Trazadone which just made me feel like a zombie and shortly after switched me to Wellbutrin 150mg daily.
Avatar f tn Prozac has the least reported weight gain of the ssris and is the easiest to quit taking, so it's not a bad place to start if you decide to go the ssri route. Lexapro would be the second least likely to cause weight gain. But of course, it's very individual.
Avatar m tn Paxil seems to be stronger than other ssris, possibly because of its larger effect on choline receptors, which accounts for some its difficulties. Prozac, of the ssris, has the least weight gain and is easiest to quit. Paxil seems to work better for anxiety, but there are other ones you can try as well if you don't want to do Paxil. And nobody can tell you which will work for you -- it's just too individual.
1033596 tn?1252519593 I don't want to play doctor here or anything, but I was in a similar situation for several years. My apartment got broken into, then I moved home, and then my house literally got hit by lightening. I started taking lexapro for the Post-Traumatic Stress. I'd always been a bit of a snacker and stress-eater, but I a burdensome amount of weight from it. I asked my doctor about other alternatives to the Lexapro, and she suggested Welbutrin.
