10608291 tn?1411415602 t want to increase the availability of serotonin -- withdrawal is caused by the brain trying to work again by itself to use serotonin and break it down naturally, and receptors that were not needed because the drugs were targeting only certain receptors begin to reawaken, which is thought to cause a lot of the problems of withdrawal. So you have to be careful. Hopefully, you have been.
18298688 tn?1463859539 No, this isn't serotonin syndrome. That's much more severe and quite rare. But meds that affect brain neurotransmitters often cause sweating and temperature changes and weight gain. Effexor is a very stimulating antidepressant, and as such isn't usually used for primary anxiety, as it can cause anxiety and some of what you're experiencing.
603015 tn?1329862973 Yes you can. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are designed to screw around with your serotonin and noradenalin levels increasing them which makes you feel happy. Its as simple as that.
Avatar f tn The problem with St. John's Wort is that nobody knows exactly how it works for depression -- different active ingredients have been claimed to be the reason, so that shows nobody knows. It has also been erroneously called an MAO inhibitor, etc.
1134609 tn?1269272200 the cycling just never seems to end. I am on 225mgs of Lamictal, 1600mgs of Neurontin and 1.5mgs of Klonopin. I have Xanax XR as a PRN and had too take that, along with 5 melatonin and 3 Benadrtyl to sleep last night; ridiculous...I still have a bunch of Xanax XR floating around in my system and it's not putting a dent into the mania. Over the past two weeks, my psychiatrist and I have tried Lithium (became very agitated) and Seroquel (made the cycling far worse).
Avatar f tn I have not noticed that symptom with any of the numerous meds I've been on over the years. Currently on lamictal 200mg and lexapro 20mg and no excess urination problems. If something else is causing your problem, I know the doc can prescribe medicines that will limit your need to urinate so often. But your doc should check every other possible cause to be sure there is not another medical condition.
Avatar m tn I have been on Lamictal for years for Bipolar Disorder. Just recently, I have been having really strange dreams, and at some point, it always turns into a nightmare. It doesn't always stay bad, but at some point during the night, I wake up sweating. And its not just an I'm hot sweating, its like I wake up with my clothes wet sweating. I'm usually not hot, but I have to kick off my blanket to try and get my body heat back down.
Avatar n tn The chances of developing serotonin syndrome are much less than expected if triptans and SSRI are combined together. I would suggest you to discuss this option with your specialist and let us know if you have more questions. http://findarticles.
351317 tn?1204751871 For example you could have perfectly normal levels of Serotonin in your brain, but if the receptors in your brain are performing the reuptake (a kind of absorbsion) of that Serotonin too rapidly then much less Serotonin is left in between the receptors and this inhibits the brains ability to function normally, which can result in a depressed brain. Not to mention that Serotonin reuptake is not the only contributing factor related to depression.
Avatar f tn In addition to preventing the reuptake of serotonin, it also acts directly on certain serotonin receptors in the brain (it's farily complicated and way beyond the scope of this message board) It is often grouped in with the other SSRIs, which it almost technically is, but is usually refered to as an 'atypical antidepressant' or serotonin modulator. I don't have any personal experience with it, btw. Although we are all different, it has certainly been successful for some people.
644988 tn?1236364548 Wellbutrin, Abilify, Lamictal. I do know that without Lithium I am an emotional mess. This is just my experience. I wish you luck with your finding the right meds.
Avatar f tn Hello there, Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors ( SSRI like Lexapro ) work by inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin neurotransmitters. What it means is that you will keep the serotonin active longer before throwing it out ( to keep it simple ). It doesn't boost the serotonin production, it just make better use of the serotonin already present ( here again to keep it simple ). Your body is always producing serotonin and Lexapro only make a better use of this already produced serotonin.
Avatar m tn s no evidence anyone has more or less serotonin than anyone else. What ssris do is prevent the breakdown of serotonin so it soaks the neuron longer in it. This isn't the natural way the body acts, but these meds have helped many people. But whether you want to take them or not, or need them or not, is up to you. They won't cure you, they will only mitigate the symptoms you're having. If there is a cure, it's through therapy.
Avatar m tn - Out of breath from SIMPLE activities (like huffing and puffing after mowing the lawn) I dont know if this is all caused by low serotonin or low testosterone,. I had my t-levels checked and the doc says that DHEA was very elevated by testosterone was normal , however I have a very good feeling that , naturally, i had higher than average T-levels and the sudden decrease to normal may be the cause of these symptoms im experiencing. If its not the Test, then perhaps its low serotonin?
1460652 tn?1340248730 I am now on pristiq 75mg and lamictal 300 mg in addition to Ativan as needed. My anxiety is coming back unfortunately. My psychiatrist wants me to take gabapentin. It seems like she is just guessing at this point. Any suggestions? I know we are not doctors but I figure someone may be going through something similar. Thank you.
Avatar m tn More than likely due to a combination of cymbalta, trazodone, and tryptophan, I had serotonin syndrome back in March. I was taken off cymbalta and trazodone cold turkey at the hospital. Through my experiences with doctors over the last couple months, I've learned I can only trust myself, and ask others for advice. One of the reasons for this is because my psychiatrist put me back on SRRI's 3 separate times within the first month after my serotonin syndrome.
710547 tn?1295446030 And how many have low neurotransmitters (serotonin, epinephrine, norepinephrine, Dopamine) These when low indicate or lead to low immune system. Since ms is more common in the higher latitudes, vit D is harder to get and it is associated with greater incidence. I have very low D and low Serotonin. I'm trying to work on some supplementation I can use to help myself other than the DMDs. Thanks for your input.
Avatar f tn Does anyone know of any medications other than Geodon, Depakote and Lexapro to treat Bipolar? I have been depressed for over 3 years, and I've also tried Lithium, Lamictal, Cymbalta and Buspar. I wake up dreading the day, and I feel very anxious all day, like I don't want to stay unoccupied. My thoughts are all about how I'm never going to beat this thing; it feels almost like something alien has taken over my brain. I also can't yawn anymore.
Avatar f tn You should NEVER take two SSRI's in tandem like that. Both of those drugs are SSRI's and sould NEVER be combined as a treatment. You can mix an SNRI with an SSRI, but NEVER two SSRI's together. That is Psychopaharmalogical fact. What doctor put you on two SSRI's in tandem as a treatment. To do so is risking Serotonin syndrome. I'm not trying to scare you, but I must tell you that in no circumsatnce is this safe.
Avatar m tn Did the Paxil work? Did you undergo therapy to try and solve the underlying problem while you were on the medication? The fact the Lexapro worked for awhile might prove this wrong, but Paxil is a very difficult med to take and stop taking. For whatever reason it is stronger than other meds in how it affects people both on it and after they stop it. This isn't universal, but often the case.
1448748 tn?1312956208 I was taking lamictal for pain and fatigue problems of unknown cause for the past 4 months, I've recently been having blurred vision and headaches in the last three weeks.
524020 tn?1223161005 I was on lamictal and ativan at the same time - I was okay until my son was murderedin 1/05 - and then it seemed like nothing helped - suffered from PTSD so I was going from one med to the other - however doctor kept me on lamictal than I switched doctors and the new one put me on 400 mgs of lamictal and that's when my problems started I got bad rash and once you get a rash from lamictal you can't go back on it - however I was okay under regular dose of 200 mgs - also had problems when d
Avatar f tn I relapsed while on Lexapro and my doc started me on Effexor and Lamictal. The effexor was horrible for me, I felt awful and my blood pressure skyrocketed. The Lamictal is supposed to be a mood stabilizer. I am taking 200mg daily. My doc weaned me from Effexor and put me back on prozac 20mg (I stopped it several years back because it was making me extremely irritable). The prozac does not seem to be working like it did before.
