how does norvasc work

Is there any other drug out there that will work the same way to open up small blood vessels like Norvasc but wont have the "bad swelling of legs and feet?" Anyone, please me know know, looking forward to hearing from you...

I have extensive CAD with mutiplable stent placement in the past 22 months, and have high blood pressure (Usally 180/110 And higher), what effect does the high blood pressure have on CAD and angina. I am on bp meds. (norvasc, imdur, toprol XL, spirolactone, valturna, cattapress tts, iron, dexilant & carfate).

does norvasc cause hair loss cuz i am noticing the entire top of my head is bald but i still have hair in the very front i can spike up and hair on both sides.

It was decided to add Norvasc 5mg INSTEAD of Nifedipine, since Norvasc was used/tolerated well in the past. Began taking Norvasc 5mg along with Lorsartan 100mg and Atenolol 25mg (all 1x daily) approximately 3 days ago, and the blood pressure is still running extremely high. This morning reading was 186/85 and tonight 176/110!!! Worried that this can be dangerous. What should be done? How long until the BP goes to a "normal" range? Does the doctor need to increase the Norvasc dosage?

The second day on the Benicar I did good but when I left work I forgot to go to pharmacy for Norvasc so I was gong after dinner. Before I had the chance within a 2 minute time frame my heart rate went from normal to 160 bpm and would not stop. Went to er where they did blood work and said all blood work looked normal. I experienced the racing and shortness of breath for about 2 to 3 hours off and on. Er doc said probably some tachardia due to stopping the beta blocker I had been on for years.

Some calcium channel blockers can affect heart rate and are not indicated for use with beta blockers. Norvasc does not have that conflict. You also might ask about a low dose diuretic such as Hydrochlorothiazide provided there are no contraindication to its use with your health history.

When I take the generic for Norvasc, my feet swell; this does not happen when I do not take the medication. Will natural diaretics help with this. My diastolic pressure hovers around 90; systolic comes down easily with the Norvasc; diastolic is slower to respond.

Did you take it for blood pressure or heart condition or other(migrane prophylaxis)? Norvasc and verapamil are both calcium channel blockers but I believe they have different mechanisms of action. I was previously on 12.5 mg of Coreg 2X a day for high blood pressure. I am also taking 10mg of Lexapro a day for anxiety. This caused me to become very fatigued and my doctor attributed it to the Coreg so he switched me to 10mg Norvasc every day (after weaning off the Coreg for 3 days). This was 2 weeks ago and I'm still feeling the same fatigue. How long does Coreg stay in your system after you stop taking it?

I have started taking Norvasc for Hypertension and am having side effects such as nausea, headache, and it seems to be causing some eye pain and pressure. My concern is that I had retinal detachment surgery in March of 2008 and have not had any pain until I started taking Norvasc 5mg. daily. Is this a side effect that is normal and will it subside or is it a reason to discontinue this drug?

I never took another one and told my doctor that I wanted to go back and try the Norvasc. The Norvasc did begin to help after a couple of weeks, adn the spasms started to get less severe and less in occurrences. I wonder if I should have given the Cardizem more time or just be happy with the way the Norvasc is working?

Then it happened I was told I had heart spasms I was in the hospital for 11 days I had a cath done and they were going to put in stints they wouldn’t know how many till they got inside I was transferred to a better hospital and they did another cath and told me they couldn’t stint because the spasms were so bad inside the whole heart.

I'm a 64 yrs. old woman who used to take Diovan 320 mg. & Toprol 50 mg. for my B.P. My B.P. readings was okay but my Doctor discontinued the Toprol because my heart rate usually on the 40's. I am currently taking Norvasc 5mg. with the Diovan 320 mg. So far, my B.P. readings is very good, 110/70. But eversince I started the Norvasc, my left leg is swelling and it is becoming worst. then tonight I went to take my medicine for my angina and a light went off in my brain --- I started a new drug, Norvasc (a calcium channel blocker) for my angina in mid-June. I've been taking amplodipine / norvasc 10 mg (antihypertensive) for about a year and a half now and montelukast / singulair 10 mg (leukotriene modifier) for shorter periods (2 months, march - may 2008 and 2 months this year, started in early may and still on it). Last month, after having been on fluoxetine / prozac for about 1 year, I showed some deterioration (more depressive symptoms, more anxiety / panic attacks).

What allmymarbles says is true, but if you have ADHD or ADD it doesn't work like speed does to a non ADHDer. A 20mgXR is a very small dose. It would be impossible to get addicted to that. Now if your doctor was an idiot and get upping the dose and refilling your prescriptions frequently, it would be a different story. From what I have read on this forum, over the last 4 years - I think it is worth a try.

Like all drugs - some people can take them, and some can not take them ! Norvasc is a combo drug - iv tryed it twice and hated it both times ! had adverse side effects from it.. and got very sick from it ! Seems you got the normal b/s story from your Doctor , the side effects will stop or fade keep taking it .. ( he hopes) the side effect wont ever stop ! or fade - if you have them I would go back to the Doctor and tell him - its not working -I dont like it !

ll go along fine and then wham my blood pressure will spike out of nowhere to 170/102 so my dr decided to start me on meds. I started taking norvasc 2.5 mgs at night because my BP is really high when I wake up. After being on it for 5 days I ended up in the ER with dizziness and another sudden BP spike. ER sent me home told me to take a norvasc when I got home then to start taking it in the AM. Next morning I felt awful so my GP told me stop norvasc and started me on clonidine.

Get yourself a heart rate monitor and use for training (I use a Polar because it does work in the pool). Sounds to me like you may be overtraining, as you can reach high heart rates on a bike. Try a long walk once in awhile. Hope this helps and best wishes with your exercise and healthy lifestyle.
