Common Questions and Answers about Heat exhaustion symptoms in dogs

heat

Avatar f tn Dogs can get heat exhaustion and heat stroke just like people, and heat stroke can be fatal without immediate medical support. It's so easy to forget proper hydration and cooling during the beginning of the summer months. I'm guilty of that myself. Living in a sub-tropical region and being sensitive to heat, I have to force water and Gatorade down my throat regularly if I'm outside.
Avatar f tn Neglect normally takes days, weeks or even months to kill the dogs - watch any resuce show and you see the horrible conditions that dogs have survived in for months.
927213 tn?1270011366 t know. Did she have any symptoms of heat exhaustion going alongside this weakness in her legs? (Such as: heavy panting/breathing TOO deeply/salivation/distress of any kind?).....[later stages include: dry gums as the heat prostration progresses, weakness, confusion or inattention, vomiting or diarrhea and sometimes bleeding. As the condition progresses towards heat prostration or heat stroke there may be obvious paleness or graying to the gums.
Avatar n tn I recall my boss from several years ago who had an Italian Greyhound who nearly died of heat stroke here in Texas. They had adopted the dog in winter, and one fine day in the middle of May when temps suddenly jumped to the low 90's, they looked out the window and saw the dog just laid out in the yard. She was unconscious almost dead. Thirty minutes earlier she was running and playing with the kids.
436837 tn?1293793226 You do right to limit the time laying in the sun. Dogs can easily get heat stroke and heat exhaustion and dehydration. Basking in the sun when it gets TOO hot is not a very good idea. I've caught my dog doing it sometimes....but most of the time she knows when she's had enough and moves automatically to the shade. A question. Just a thought. Does your dog stick close by you when you're outside? Mine is inclined to. If I am in the sun she'll come and sit or lay near me.
Avatar m tn s actually someone like a real stroke but heat stroke or heat exhaustion affects the brain in a different way and the ongoing symptoms are related to the body's reaction to heat or sun. Not everyone experiences ongoing sensitivity, and yours may ease off. But in my case, it was permanent. I remember those two incidents very well to this day, man I was sick (unbelievable). So in a way I am not surprised.
Avatar f tn Any moms to be live in a hot climate? I live in Florida where it is very humid all the time and now after a couple days trying to figure out why I have felt so crappy, my husband finally figured it out lol anyways anyone have any tips on staying cool while pregnant?
Avatar f tn Hi, It is good that you are feeling better already. Heat-related illness such as heat exhaustion occurs when your body gets too hot. This can be caused by physical exercise or hot weather. It can present with heavy sweating, feeling weak, dizziness, nausea, headache, fast heartbeat and dark-colored urine, which indicates dehydration. It is important that you get out of the heat quickly. Drink plenty of water or other fluids.
Avatar f tn Today my boyfriend and I were outside playing with his dogs and suddenly I got a hot flash, felt really tired and my legs and hands were shaky. I am on my period so I wasn't sure if it was because of that or something else. If somebody could give me an idea of what they think it could be please let me know!!
Avatar f tn I have read several commments regarding heat stroke/exhaustion. No one has mentioned swelling. If I exert myself when temps are hot and humidity high, my face and ears swell up. They itch and are bright red. The only thing that seems to help is a steroid shot and prednisone pack. My face and ears will peel almost like a sunburn. Does this happen to anyone out there? If I sweat during the night I will get itchy. Gold Bond medicated powder helps tremendously.
Avatar f tn Yes, I do feel nauseous when overheated but have done so all my life. I grew up in Miami so heat exhaustion was always a concern. As I grew older ,it seemed to take less and less heat exposure to bring on the nauseated feeling. Can't say it's related to MS or if it's just my body chemistry. Independent of the cause, one should always make sure you are adequately hydrated.
1419501 tn?1320206310 t that far for a male dog to come courting! Males have been known to run to exhaustion to catch a female on heat. And scent can be carried by all kinds of things. The postman's vehicle, delivery trucks, the wind even.... Heat cycle usually lasts no more than 3 weeks. A swollen vulva is more noticeable in the last 2 weeks far as I've noticed.
Avatar f tn Only Female Dogs experience Heat Cycles; Not Males.....What your describing is normal behavior in an Un-neutered male.....However, with the length of this (2 hrs.), I'd be concerned about a back injury (Common in Toy Breeds)......Take the toy away from him or stop it by having him Neutered.....
Avatar m tn My quesyion is, how far into the cycle is the best time for her to get pregnant? She is 4 yrs old and other times when she was in heat her stuff seemed more swelled or puffed up than it does right now. I think its too early my wife says no. any help would be greatly appreciated.
Avatar f tn A year ago I believe I suffered some heat exhaustion/stroke and since then, when i start getting hot during activities, i get chills up and down my spine, arms and legs. My calf muscle on my left side will tingle/becomes numb, i get dizzy , my face gets red, i can feel my heart pounding in my head and my breathing is rapid but shallow and i have trouble regulating it for a few minutes. It scares me.
Avatar m tn i was walking in the sun for probably 3 hours it was very hot 46 c this day, suddenly i felt my heart is racing and beating so fast with 3 ectopic beats in very few second, i stopped and put my hand on my heart it was beating too fast and strong, i cooled myself down and drank some fluids it all went back to normal(but the ectopic beats lasted for a week), went to a cardiologist he said i'm fine and it's just heat exhaustion, is it AFib or just palpitations with heat exhaustion?
Avatar m tn It is likely that you experienced some degree of heat exhaustion if you were sleeping for such long hours in direct sunlight. Also it is concerning that you did not have ventilation in the car when you were sleeping. It is quite possible that you had been inspiring air poor in oxygen and have had a buildup of carbondioxide in the blood. It is difficult to say whether it was this is the cause of your current headaches though.
Avatar f tn I am from Arizona and before that I lived in South Carolina so I am used to heat and I know what heat exhaustion feels like and this was like nothing I have experienced before. I had only been outside for about an hour when all of a sudden I got very nauseous and felt a little lightheaded so I went to sit down and within a couple minutes I started seeing white patches in my vision and I could barely see at all.
Avatar f tn s important to know the signs/symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke and steps you can take to prevent them. Medications can also affect the body's ability to regulate temperature, so it might be worth asking your pharmacist some questions on this topic. It was brutal here yesterday with the temperature hitting 101 and the heat index registering 116. Hope everybody stays cool and has a great weekend.
Avatar f tn My outer body gets way too hot and I can feel the heat myself and am too hot even in winter and it keeps me awake and i'm even hot with the radiator off, no pajamas, window open and the thinnest feather quilt (feathers cooler then synthetic) and my hands and feet are roasting but the only part of me that can sweat is my chest, back, armpits and hands. Other people feel the heat coming off me and my dad worries about it.
725621 tn?1314843247 hi, its my first time using this site and am very happy it's available. My dog "Lady" well.... she's in heat! I've never had a female dog before, i only had three males in the past and all this "heat cycle" thing is really new to me. My problem is she's been bleeding quite frequently whole afternoon and i am worried. She's behaving normal but, am feeling very sad for her because i don't know if she's in pain or not? its quite frustrating!
