Heart operation valves

Common Questions and Answers about Heart operation valves

operation

Avatar m tn I recently found out that my (not very close) friend has a heart defect - a missing valve. He lives a normal life, although he's not recommended to do sports or some hard chores. I'm very worried about him, since I don't know anything about heart diseases, so I decided to ask you for any information about this kind of disease and what could be the major problems it can cause. Will he need an obligatory operation after some time? How dangerous it is?
Avatar f tn I recently read by a renown surgeon that almost all heart valves can be accomlished by a very experienced surgeons. I also have been delaying a valve operation as I don't have any symptoms that limit my quality of life!. May be a mistake. Then I have read a message from a Mayo Clinic surgeon who states the biggest problem he sees is that his patients have waited too long.
Avatar f tn That is a complicated question, but for a starter I'd say it means all the chambers, walls and valves have normal size, thickness, and operation (respectively). I think it does not mean one can not have electrical/rhythm problems, that is different that structurally normal.
Avatar m tn Hi, my name is Khaldoun Al habib and i am 32 years old I would like your advise on a heart surgery that i will undertake on Novermber 2010. In 1999 i had a correction to a coarctation with a 20mm Dacron interposition and in October 2000 i excised a bicuspid aortic valve, replaced with a 24mm cryopreserved aortic homograft. A couple of weeks ago i was admitted to hospital with left heart failure, pulmonary oedema and orthopnea.
Avatar n tn There is a mixed view on when to do a valve operation. The Mayo Clinic's renown heart surgery states publically that the biggest problem he see is that the patient waited too long. Waiting too long can require an operation when the left ventricle is enlarged and that condition would reduce the EF, and an operation subsequently the EF may never return to normal function.
Avatar n tn Bioprosthetic valves do not require coumadin but especially in your age group they wear out more quickly than mechanical valves. In selected centers in the US the placement of a special bioprosthetic valve is possible transluminally, but this is still in its infancy and not likely to be the standard of care for the next 5 years. It depends on your priorities: if not being on coumadin is more important than needing re-operation 4-5 years sooner then choose the BP.
Avatar m tn I would have needed to replace a tissue valve in about 10 years (and perhaps two more times if I stuck to tissue valves). My surgeon felt that the risk of re-operation was greater than the risk from taking warfarin forever. I have heard from people who have taken warfarin for 30+ years without difficulty. My surgeon said that taking warfarin increases the chance of a "bleed" by about 1% per year.
Avatar f tn Hi, How are you? When is your scheduled heart operation? The main advantage of mechanical valve is its excellent lifetime durability. However, the major drawback is the need for long-term anticoagulation with a blood thinner to prevent the formation of blood clots on the valve. These blood clots can break off and cause a variety of problems such as a stroke and malfunction of the heart valve. Bioprosthetic or tissue valves have low risk of clot formation but with limited life spans.
Avatar m tn IS this Biscuspid valve operation a major operation to Heart. Since i am only 27 Years old and i can do all activities after the operation as normal or else i have to take precautions which Heart patients take after surgery.
Avatar n tn They could have done open heart surgery, bypass and fixed the valves in one operation. Was she short of breath before this all happened? When heart valves are bad, a person becomes short of breath. Climbing stairs is hard, energy level drops, easily tired. Chest pains are usually caused by plugged arteries. It does happened when the artery tears during a stent placement. Sometimes the artery is weak.
Avatar f tn I suppose it is possible to replace 3 heart valves, but I have never heard of that before, and I have been a member of valve replacement forum. If one is going to have 3 valves replaced, it would for me have to be one of the surgeons associated with a major hospital such as Cleveland Clinic, Mayo Clinic or Texas Heart Institute (Houstion). Avatar m tn s, I was born with heart defects, and because of this am lining up for my 6th open heart surgery operation at aged 28. I have had my pulmonary valve replaced twice before, but this time I am supposed to get both the pulmonary and aorta valves replaced. I guess i am a little (lot) scared about it as I feel I have just entered a phase where I have a lot of living yet to do and really don't want this to end me now.
367994 tn?1304953593 For some perspective if left untreated, endocarditis can damage your heart valves and permanently destroy your heart's inner lining. This can cause your heart to work harder to pump blood eventually causing heart failure — a chronic condition in which your heart is unable to pump enough blood to meet your body's needs. If the infection progresses untreated, it's usually fatal. The usual protocol are high doses of intravenous antibiotics in the hospital.
Avatar n tn Structural defects in the heart, illness like an infection in the heart tissue, certain drugs can affect heart rhythm. Shock and distress can upset your heart rhythm, as can heavy drinking. My missed beats began after an operation - I took a long time to come round after the general anaesthetic and was later found to have 'multiple ectopics'. If you feel you are having arrythmia, you should see a doctor.
Avatar m tn t know the history. What caused your Fathers EF to get to low, are his valves diseased? is it both sides of the heart with low EF? is his heart enlarged? has he suffered an illness?
Avatar n tn If you have a mechanical valve, you need to use blood-thinning (anticoagulant) medication for life to prevent blood clots from forming on the valve. Tissue valves generally come from a pig, cow or human-cadaver donor heart. These kinds of valves wear out over time, and you may need another operation to replace the valve. However, an advantage of the tissue valve is that you don't have to use long-term anticoagulation medication.
1060769 tn?1254977492 The blood is basically staying in your arteries or the heart and it just means the blood isnt being pushed out of the heart as efficiently as it could. Lots of people have leaking valves, millions in the US. Is your leak mild, moderate or severe? if mild/moderate it is likely they will try to control your symptoms with medication. Severe will require repair surgery or replacement.
Avatar n tn t function properly since she was 5 yrs old and now she is around 60 yrs old now the the doctors advising to take open heart i.e. heart valve replacement operation as her other valve is now little bit damaged due to excessive work as doctors said bu some doctors say it is need not to be operated because it is childhood disease. My question is operation is required or not . If yes is it ok for operation bcause now she is 60 but she doesn't any problems with blood pressure and sugar.
Avatar n tn The choice of a valve warrants a comprehensive preoperative assessment and discussion with the patient, although the final decision often can be made only during the operation. Mechanical prosthetic valves are associated with a high risk of thromboembolism, and anticoagulant therapy is required. In patients with atrial fibrillation or other conditions, anticoagulation may already be necessary; a mechanical valve, with its increased durability, may therefore be a good choice for these patients.
Avatar m tn This would be opposed to staging towards a Fontan operation, when one of the pumping chambers or inlet heart valves is smaller. Either type of approach generally involves multiple surgeries over a lifetime. The long term prognosis for Fontan patients is still evolving, but there is a high likelihood of dying at a younger age than someone with 2 pumping chambers. That being said, either heart condition has surgical options in most cases. The decision to pursue that is up to the family.
Avatar m tn Is there a method with which I can find out the status of the heart consequent to RF Ablation.
Avatar f tn I would have to say an ultrasound along with a nuclear perfusion scan.
Avatar m tn My consultant (who is just great) has informed me I will need to have both valves replaced,I had a mitral valve repair 14years ago,I am wondering what is the success rate of having both valves replaced at the same time.I am 63 years of age and have some severe symptoms including a.f.
