Avatar f tn Have you been tested for thyroid antibodies to make sure you do, in fact, have Graves disease and are not simply in a hyper phase of Hashimoto's? Both Graves and Hashimoto's are autoimmune. While Graves is always connected with hyperthyroidism, Hashimoto's is most often connected with hypothyroidism, however it's not uncommon for one to have periods of hyperthyroidism in the beginning stages. You should ask for thyroid antibody tests.
Avatar f tn d with Graves in March 2006. I have been on MMI(methimazole) for 2.8 yrs. I started off on 30 mgs. and went very very hypo right away. I have gained 38 pounds in 2.8 years and feel dreadful. When dx'd my TSI was 243 <129. My FT4 for was 1.86(.8-1.85) and FT3 was 2.60 <2.00. I really never had very high FT's. They have always stayed low but my TSH has been low forever. I think I have many blocking antibodies because of my TBII is 31% <16%.
Avatar f tn If it is a hot nodule, then would recommend either I-131 or surgery (w/ an expert thyroid surgeon). If Graves, then we try methimazole first (usually at doses of 5-20mg/day), if that is not working then discuss pros/cons of I-131 vs surgery which is a decision that should be customized to the individual patient.
Avatar f tn Just diagnosed with Graves Disease / Thyroid Eye Disease. My only symptom was i noticed one eye looked different which led me to the eye doctor who immediatley referred me to an Endo. He said i caught it very early and put me on 5mg Methimazole once a day. Should i worry about weight gain being on this medication? I was / am actually trying to lose weight as this is all going on.
Avatar n tn I was diagnosed with Graves disease about a year ago. My thyroid for the past 6 years has been a rollercoaster. NOT fun. Just over the past 2 months my tsh level went from 1.26 to below 0. My endo doc also did blood work last week and my T3's are high. He said I have extreme hyper and that my Graves is kicking in finally. He has put me on methimazole and I will be taking my first dose tonight. I'll have to be on it 6 weeks and then get blood drawn again. My question is...
Avatar f tn Looks like Graves' disease based on the significant elevation in T3 however to confirm this a TSI blood test or I-123 nuclear uptake would be required.
Avatar n tn Good day, Doctor! I have been diagnosed with Graves disease since Oct. last year. Been on Methimazole since then. Lately my FT4 became a lot lower than the normal, so my endo put me on 10mg of methimazole for 6 weeks. Since my FT4 became low, I've been experiencing intermittent muscle cramps, ranging from mild to extremely painful ones. Normally, it would occur around my legs or extremities. It would normally go away after a few minutes of rest. Is this due to my low ft4?
Avatar f tn 19 year old son was getting hives mainly at night. Diagnosed with Graves disease a couple weeks ago and on meds now. is this normal with graves?
Avatar m tn I was diagnosed with Graves' Disease in 2001 and my symptoms were incredibe fatigue and pain all over that felt like my muscles and bones were being pulled apart. When put on the methimazole, the aches and fatigue stopped immediately. After 5 years, however of being on the methimazole, still could not control TSH for correct levels and has thyroid removed.
Avatar f tn So unless your Graves' has gone into remission, stopping the Methimazole would eventually only put you back to square one: hyperthyroid. Seems like a reduction to 5 mg would be the better idea. I have read that nearly half of patients who take antithyroid medications for their Graves' disease go into remission.
Avatar f tn I have had graves disease for 5-6 years now. I take one 10 mg of Methimazole at night time and that is all. I have been very stable on my medicine for years now. I have also been very lucky to not have any problems with my eyes or other symptoms of that nature. I always get concerned when thinking about pregnancy because I want to make sure it is safe for me to conceive. Also, I know that your thyroid can get worse and better during and after pregnancy.
2899052 tn?1436831245 I'm recently diagnosed with hyperthyroidism with Graves' disease. The endocrinology doctor prescribed me Methimazole 10mg (3 tablets) in morning, that's 30mg. I also have to take Propranolol (3 times a day) every 8 hours to control my palpitation. I'm very concerned about take Methimazole because I heard it will give me liver problem and I'm very scared of taking radioactive because it can harm my eyes. Am I wrong? I need to know if they are they safe?
Avatar f tn A little over a year ago i was told I had graves disease. I did not want to take the methimazole and opted for a fast fix with radioactive Iodine. 131. I deeply regret doing it. The only blessing is, it did not kill my thyroid and after a brief time going Hypo with a TSH of 50.6 I went right back to Hyper. In the meantime , a few weeks after the RAI my eyes began to bother me.... Oh Joy.... Graves Eye Disease , caused or mad worse by the Iodine treatment. If you think Graves Disease is bad?
Avatar n tn I was diagnosed with Graves disease 11 years ago. My endo prescribed Methimazole, which I was allergic to, so he told me he didn't want to prescribe me anything else because sometimes the allergy kills the thyroid. It apparently did, because all of a sudden I was hypo and I had to go on synthroid. Since then, I lost my health insurance and got handled by my PCP instead of the endo (cheaper).
Avatar n tn I am a 33 yr old female who was diagnosed with Graves disease almost 2 yrs ago. At this point it is pretty much out of control and I am having problems getting into see an Endo. My TSH is .009, T3 1329 and T4 3.94. I have had a numerous amount of symptoms develop over the last few months the one that concerns me the most is a constant feeling of someone chocking me. Although my levels are extremely high I have still managed to gain 25lbs over the past year and a half.
Avatar n tn you could have graves disease, hashimotos disease, or silent thyroiditis. each condition is treated differently. from what you've posted, it doesn't seem like your doctor has done all of the tests necessary to determine which condition you have. am i right?
Avatar f tn this may have been a transient thyroiditis and not graves (in which case you could wean off methimazole with your doctor's supervision) - but one cannot say it's not graves just b/c levels are normal on methimazole.
Avatar f tn I really thought I was losing my mind, I have had this for about 4 yrs and just now was diagnosed with Graves disease. My Dr put me on Methimazole and after 3 weeks had a severe reaction and was covered head to toe with a horrible insanely itchy rash. Mr Endo told me I have a couple options radio active iodine or somthing else which he did not tell me what. My question is how has the radio active iodine worked for others?
Avatar f tn Dr. Lupo , is there anything that will help this disorder. I have Graves Disease , took RAI in Oct of 08 then a few months later my eyes began swelling and tearing. I have been told there is nothing that can be done. My Eye Doctor says it is a unpredictable disease and will see me again in two months. Is there anything I can do at home , other than tear drops and wait? My Blood work showed TSH at 0.0 and my Free T4 at 1.85 . I know this means I am still Hyper. What should normal levels be?
Avatar f tn Has anyone diagnosed with Graves disease had a successful remission without surgery? If yes, how long did it take and how did you know you were back to normal? I am debating the surgery vs long term use of thryoid suppressants.
