Common Questions and Answers about Fingernail ridges in children

nail

Avatar n tn They do not have complete horizontal ridges across them. Sort of like moguls on a ski slope. They are not discolored and it only occurs in those two fingernails. She has had this for close to a year. She's rarely sick and if it was nail fungus I would think it would have spread to her other nails.
Avatar n tn Ever since I can remember, on my thumbnail and big-toe nail, there has been a strange deterioration. It looks like a series of grooves in the center of the nail (see attached pictures). My fingernails aren't weak or brittle and they're not really falling off or anything. I don't think it's anything serious, but I've always been curious what it is. If anybody could help at all, that would be great.
Avatar f tn I have read that the fingernail ridges could be due to malabsorption. That coupled with the fatty stool makes me think my liver isn't working properly and digesting the fat as it should. I have weighed the same amount since I was 16 years old, and only gained around 20 lbs when I was pregnant. During my pregnancy, I had Intreheptic Cholestasis of Pregnancy, which is a rare liver disorder that occurs only during pregnancy, but it went away after I gave birth.
691935 tn?1421027090 I too had it for the last few years. I keep them short now. Just worked on that janky toenail I've had too. Sandal ready. Uhm, kinda. Mine have ridges too. Another thing I kept asking dr about for years. So- does it get better post tx? My iron is a love hate thing. I had to drop it for tx, but try n get it in my diet. I DID find an iron free multiple vit. That way I can kind of control the dose n not overload liver. My.. Chatty me tonight.
Avatar m tn I have lines on my nails that are ugly and I saw drops in a magizine for it once but when I went to order them I could'nt find the artical, and both my parents have it and it killed a foot fungus that tried to infect me after 1 year??????
Avatar m tn Hi I just want to know what can cause some or all of these combined symptoms, Hair thinning, lost of appetite, a few dark toenails but not all of them, 1 fingernail half light pink half light brown with vertical lines no ridges, wart on ball of both feet and lately some lost of taste (I'm thinking due to thin white film on tongue) I was a Severe smoker until recently when I stopped.

Avatar n tn I had brittle, thin nails with wavy ridges, and white spots in them that went away after the magnesium and calcium issues resolved...I still use papaya enzymes that has also amylase, lipase, and protease in them...They are chewable, and don't taste too bad!
Avatar m tn I seem to have some weird circular ridges in my erection. It does not hurt, they are very prominent and are easy to feel. I am hoping to know what these so called "ridges" are. I have been freaking out about this for months. I am thinking about asking my physician, but decided to come here first.
Avatar f tn They are the same color as nails, not very deep but definitely noticable. These ridges are especially noticable on the bed of my thumbs and also on the toenails of the big toes. Other fingernails/toenails don't seem to have ridges, maybe just a few small ridges on index finger nails.
Avatar m tn Do you think the virus will transfer from my hand to zipper to then underneath my fingernail? Is it possible to get underneath the fingernail from a small metal zipper?
Avatar n tn This sounds like a fungal infection. You have mentioned the occurrence of ridges on the nails. Ridges on the nails may suggest underlying disorders like a fungal infection, anemia and dehydration. In fungal infections however, the nails may become whitish ,yellowish and soft. They will eventually separate from the nail bed. Continue to observe the condition. Have you sought consult with the pediatrician? I suggest that you seek consult with his pediatrician for evaluation also.
Avatar f tn It is an abnormal shape of the fingernail. The nail has raised ridges and is thin and curved inward. This disorder is associated with iron deficiency anemia. The other possibility which can present with nail pitting as well thick, white, silvery, or red patches of skin is psoriasis. It is thought that psoriasis occurs when the immune system overreacts, causing inflammation and flaking of skin. My sincere advice is to consult a dermatologist and get these two possibilities probed.
Avatar f tn I am now being tested for parathyroid but only after insisting on it because this is the second time in the past year my vit d level dropped under 15. The bone pain in awful. This time around I have it in my right leg and thumbs, last time pain was across my upper back and thumbs as well as other bone locations on the body. Silly isn't it? but very painful and depressing.
1409672 tn?1281487812 Vertical ridges represent a normal aging pattern, though some people consider the presence of ridges to be an indication of the risk of developing athririts. At any rate it is considered normal and medically insignificant.
649848 tn?1534633700 Good morning... how is everyone this morning? I hope everyone remembered to turn their clocks back an hour this morning (wherever Daylight Saving Time is practiced). It's a bright sunny day, here, after a couple of days of dark, dreary rain, but it's definitely chillied off and beginning to feel like winter. Of course, it's not as cold here as some other areas, but we're not used to being this cold so early.
Avatar n tn My fingertips on my right hand have severe pain. It started in my pointer finger. I thought it might be ingrown fingernail so I used fingernail clippers to get it out(with no success of seeing signs of ingrown fingernail).. well each day i woke up it was in a different fingertip. This lasted about a week and went away. It came back a few weeks ago but much worse. All my fingertips are sore, but the severity of it moves every couple days to a new finger.
Avatar n tn it travels from one finger tip to another lasting a couple days in one then seemingly disappearing then showing up in another. Typically it will affect two to three fingers per episode. Currently it is in the corner of my right thumb and my left big toe. It started a couple years ago and will happen 1 to 3 times per year. Any ideas?
1395422 tn?1308016251 Since I've become pregnant I have noticed these small shallow holes in my nails. Not in all of them, but in most. My nails resemble golf balls if they hit the light just right. I know this sounds odd. lol. But I can't find anything online about this. They are not white spots, ridges, none of that. Like I said, the texture resembles that of a golf ball. I have been taking my vitamins every day and I eat well. Has anyone else had this while they were pregnant. It's the weirdest thing.
Avatar f tn I have been feeling unwell for past 2 years, started with dizziness, uncoordination, extreme fatigue. My main concern is the extreme fatigue in my arms and the fatigue which hits me all of a sudden and leaves me unwell for days. I also noticed large bumpy horizontal ridges on my toe nails and smaller ones on finger nails. Any ideas. i am waiting to see neurologist but this could take over a year. I have been seen by ENT consultant who has not found anything.
Avatar f tn I noticed that photographs of my husband when he was a baby were very similar in appearance to photographs of my son when he was a baby, but it was harder to see the resemblance in person than in the photographs. And judging by appearance is not a sure way to know anything unless the two possible fathers look extremely different than another. Have you arranged for a DNA test yet?
