Why is my fingernail on my middle finger starting to pull away from my skin and turn white and the bottom half is pitting and peeling? What could this be?
Ever since I can remember, on my thumbnail and big-toe nail, there has been a strange deterioration. It looks like a series of grooves in the center of the nail (see attached pictures). My fingernails aren't weak or brittle and they're not really falling off or anything. I don't think it's anything serious, but I've always been curious what it is. If anybody could help at all, that would be great.
From the history that you have provided it looks like paronychia of the nail which progressed to infection of the fingertip. Paronychia is a soft tissue infection around a fingernail that begins as cellulitis but that may progress to a definite abscess. It is of two types: acute caused by bacterial infection and chronic caused by fungal infection.
At the top of the fingernail, where it grows out fron the finger, is a small semi-circle of white then the rest of the finger nail is pinkish. About two months ago my fingernail developed a black mark near the nailbed. It has since continued up toward the top of the nail while changing brownish now puple with the uppermost tip is turning white. My opponent pierced my skin in the palm of my hands between two fingers with his fingernail. It was bleeding a little for a while.
