Avatar m tn Nail fungus also known as Onychomycosis is very common but hard to treat because of the location of the fungus that happens to be under the nails. There are different ways to treat this infection, but recent studies suggest that using both topical and oral anti fungal medications at same time yields better result. First of all, you need to get the diagnosis confirmed from your doctor and get a KOH examination of the nail scrapings done to find out whether it is fungal infection.
Avatar m tn He prescribed a urea nail stick to aid with the fungus like matter under the fingernail. I keep it trimmed back to allow for new nail growth, but it gets to a certain point and develops this gross looking end to it. Any idea why it's taking so long for the nail to regenerate, or is this an indication of a possible underlying cause?
Avatar n tn I have an 8 yr old daughter who has two fingernails, one on each hand, that are not smooth, they are slightly bumby and the nail that grows out at the end is not uniform, curvy. They do not have complete horizontal ridges across them. Sort of like moguls on a ski slope. They are not discolored and it only occurs in those two fingernails. She has had this for close to a year. She's rarely sick and if it was nail fungus I would think it would have spread to her other nails.
Avatar f tn Cut off the loose nail portion close to the skin without cutting into the skin. A pair of fingernail nippers or fingernail scissors work best. Then brush on pure tea tree oil a couple of times a day.
Avatar n tn Definitive diagnosis of a fungal infection is through samples evaluated under the microscope for fungus. She is in the best position since she can evaluate the lesion in your nails personally. Try not to be confused with the differentials I presented. Have your wife seen also for proper management. Take care and keep us posted.
Avatar m tn What do the lines look like and are they colored? If you have fingernail fungus the topicals don't work. You would have to take a prescription oral drug (Lamisil) for three months then it kills the nail. I just went through this with my toe nail. The nail is usually yellowish.
Avatar n tn Hello, Trauma to the nail can cause blackening of the nail because of injury to the nail bed and spillage of blood in nailbed. It does not sound like a fungal infection. This bleeding can resolve on its own and if the symptoms of severe pain persists then drilling of the nail to release the blood may have to be done. Hope it helps.Take care and pls do keep me posted on how you are doing or if you have any additional queries.Kind regards.
Avatar m tn A brown or black dot or streak under a toenail or fingernail could be a blood clot, fungus infection, or possibly a skin cancer. Hence get it examined under a dermatoscope from a dermatologist. It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. I sincerely hope that helps.
Avatar f tn So I used some cuticle scissors to trim it back and sure enough there was dry blood under the nail. I guess the dry blood caused the nail to lift. Anyways, the nail is growing back just fine. I hope that helps.
Avatar m tn somedays ago i met a fight with some of the boys of the college nd after that fight one of the boys blood came under the skin of the finger nail......i dont know how.....nd that blood was visible till the end the finger nail had grown enough to cut it down.........i want ask whether this could be a hiv transmission if the boy was hiv positive......
Avatar f tn When I looked at her hand I noticed that under her nails there appeared to be dirt or blood. If she was actively bleeding under the nail she scratched me with and got her fresh blood into the cut she gave me, is it possible to get HIV this way? Thank you for your time.
Avatar f tn Hi Doctor, I got an appointment with a podiatrist and asked him his opinion on nail polish. He said that the reason why nail polish is a 'no-no' is that it traps moisture under the nail and can cause fungus!!! Yuck~!
Avatar m tn When you smash a fingernail blood immediately begins to accumulate under the nail, separating it from tissue. This blood must be drained before it coagulates. The "hot needle" trick is absolutely positively painless. If done soon after the blow you won't lose the nail.
Avatar n tn It has since continued up toward the top of the nail while changing brownish now puple with the uppermost tip is turning white. I have an appointment in October. It doesn't hurt and does not appear to look fungal according to my doctor. Is October to long to wait? I read that melanoma can develop under the nail.
Avatar m tn Thank you, I am 51, native americian, it is a brown line totally up and down straight as can be in the fingernail, it grows with the nail. It has become more prevelent over the course of 3 years. It also causes my nail to crack. No hutchinson sign. Between my knuckles under that finger has begun to have edema and pain within the last month and a half. No family history. I saw a dermatologist, he said he didn't want to mutilate and dark people don't get this.
Avatar m tn I have read a lot of the answers regarding hand to genital contact, but none regarding fresh cuts under a fingernail. I feel like this might be a different situations since the cut is under my fingernail and therefore more "inside" of my body than a regular cut on my hand. So assuming that my partner lied about his status and I did touch the blood on the dildo, what are the chances of contracting HIV or other diseases?
1430129 tn?1283281475 ) I went to the dermatologist with my son yesterday, and he told me to file the side of my nail with the fungus all the way down, he said in order to get rid of the fungus that's in my nail, I have to get rid of that part of my nail. Is this true? I also think I have a fungus on one of my toenails. I dropped something extremely heavy on my foot about two years ago, and lost the nail, it grew back fine. But then about a year ago, my toe started hurting badly.
Avatar m tn Does herpes whitlow cause pain under the fingernail and forearm? I've heard of the tingling and burning, I'm not feeling either but I'm feeling numbness under the fingernail and forearm? I did use the bathroom and with the same hand I pulled up my zipper and then in seconds used the underneath of my fingernail very firmly to secure it without washing my hands, very paranoid I spread the virus to my zipper then to the underneath of my fingernail.
Avatar f tn The vinegar will only work if you file down the nail bed, because the trick is you have to get under the surface of the thick nail bed. The fungus is gone and has never come back. I would recommend against taking the prescription because insurance companies think that this is a "cosmetic" issue and won't cover the prescription. Clearly it is something more, but this is the way insurance companies think, and they're the ones holding the purse strings.
Avatar f tn I am really worried,if the thai stripper did have hiv would the hiv in the bodily fluids under the nail stay alive for six hours, or would it have died by then?
Avatar n tn I used to be frequent nail-biter, but I recently changed jobs, and the lowered stress fixed that problem. However, now that my nails are getting longer, a couple of them became very itchy underneath. I noticed some loose skin under the nail, almost like a dried, peeling blister. I doesn't hurt, but it's annoying...
Avatar n tn Presuming it is actually a fungus, there is a problem because it is under the nail. Outside, on the skin for instance, you would just use Vick's-Vapo-Rub (believe it or not). Getting under the nail is a problem. There are systemic anti-fungals, but my husband did not have much luck with that. He kept painting the nails and pushing stuff under (as far as he could). I think it is pretty well gone now, but it took a long, long time.
Avatar n tn growth, it appears about 6-8 months of new growth under the old nail. As I said, the new nail is approx. 75% to the end of my toe, while the old nail has reced from my cuticle area about 20%. I DO have a habbit of spending ltos of time on my feet wearing shoes too tight for me, and letting my nails grow too long...and when i clip my big toes my shoues would feel worlds better the next day. Emberasssing, but the truth. This stopped about 8 months ago..
