Common Questions and Answers about Colon polyps large intestine

colon

Avatar n tn t think that a colonoscopy can reach the small intestine - I thought only the large intestine. The small intestine needs to be examined through an ESSB (Esophagus, Stomach, and Small Bowel) test (you drink a barium milkshake and they watch it pass through your system while taking x-rays). The doctor must be talking about your large intestine . I would clarify with the doctor. Not sure if the biopsy would detect yeast overgrowth - :( sorry,.
Avatar m tn that allows for measured amounts of contents to move from the end of the small intestine into the large intestine. You may find that you have more frequent bowel movements or fecal material passage into and through the large intestine. It it sometimes referred to as 'dumping' issues.
Avatar f tn If the ileocecal valve is removed it is very possible that you could have diarrhea since the 'compartmentalization' function will be lost between the small bowel and the large bowel. I believe the surgeons may be slightly overstating what 'normal' will be in what they are telling you about the results of the surgery. However, although you have reservations, it may be impossible to do the surgery any other way depending on exactly where the ulcerations are located.
Avatar m tn Is the fact that I produce polyps so fast a reason to have my Large Intestine removed as has been suggested by both surgeons who performed these procedures, Should I monitor or have the operation and remove the large intestine?
Avatar f tn fecal matter passes from small intestine through ascending colon, then across (transverse) colon, then descending colon; if a tumor formed in the ascending colon where fecal matter is mostly liquid it would take longer to identify the problem versus a larger blockage that would impact bowel movements (in the descending colon). I would guess that inflammation of the bowel is more likely. (UC/Crohns) Best of luck!
Avatar f tn Last year doctors found 26 polyps scattered throughout my large and small intestine, ranging from 2mm - 12mm. I continue to suffer with constipation for days then diarrhoea. Constant painful bloating and most recently severe lower back and hip pain that radiates down my legs. Doctors don't seem to take my concerns seriously because of my age. But at the age of 27 this is worrying to me. Should I be worried?
Avatar f tn ) While waiting for the biopsy results I researched flat polyps and learned that there are special procedures for removing large flat colon polyps. One such procedure is called endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR). I'm wondering if you had this procedure; I think it would be rare to get bleeding with it if the physician is highly skilled. It seems to be done only at large hospital centers.
Avatar n tn My husband had colon cancer in 2000, he had surgery and his large intestine removed. He then had several more surgeries due to ecoli, abdominal abscess, hernia and body rejected the mesh (all do to colon perforation during colonoscopy where cancer was found) In 2007 he had surgery number 7 for small bowell obstruction from what was used to repair the hernia in 2004 adhered to colon and wall of stomach.
Avatar n tn He feels that because of the 6 surgeries that my husband has already had for colon cancer, colon perforation and colon obstructions that his intestine is not functioning properly and it could be caused from nerve damage due to the numerous surgeries. The dr. is now trying him on a regement of Florastor and Aligin to replace the good antibotics in his intestine. I ask the dr. also about Familial Polyposis and he said he did not think that was what my husband had.
Avatar f tn I also had bowel resection, mine was mostly small intestine and a small part of the large intestine. I have chrons and had developed a fistula between the bladder and deseased small intestine. I too had had assist lapo. Although I resisted having a resection it is a God send that I did. They found early colon cancer in the wadded up deseased small intestine. It was an incedental find, they had no idea that there was any cancer there.
Avatar f tn They also removed a couple of polyps (not dysplasic) and left several in. She said there was also some activity in my small intestine and they couldn't differentiate where the large and small ended. They want to remove the entire colon and rectum where the dysplasia is located. I'm resisting. What are my options other than full surgery? Should I be concerned about the Small Intestine, too? If I do have the surgery, what are the chances that I'll get UC in the next section?
Avatar m tn Afterwards I was introduced to a surgeon who seemed to believe I should have my large intestine removed and my small intestine connected to my colon. I have read a number of the posts here, and feel somewhat better than originally about the possible surgery. However, the letter I got from the Dr who did the colonoscopy said (in part), "Your recent colon biopsy showed benign adenomatous polyp. This is not cancer but a marker for a tendency to develop cancer.
Avatar n tn One of reasons for tiredness is anemia. If she solves this (iron supplemments or whatever is required) it may help a lot. I still don't know, if polyps are adenomas (benign tumors) or are pseudopolyps as occur in Crohn's disease or in other inflammation. I think he needs a diagnosis of a whole condition not only a diagnosis of a polyp. Inflammation may be treated with antiinflammatory drugs. If polyps are adenomas, some of them may be removed during endoscopy.
Avatar f tn Even if you have your colon removed this does nothing if you do have polyps higher up in the intestine, so the logic behind your geneticist is confusing. But once you reach the point where there are too many to remove via colonoscopy and of course you are older, then you MUST have the colon removed. Remember everyone's experience is different when it comes to this surgery.
Avatar f tn Depending upon the reason for why the large intestine is being removed, in many cases the end of the small intestine can be directly attached to the rectum avoiding the use of any form of bag.
Avatar n tn s unfortunately going to have diarrhea because of the loss of the colon. One of the main function for the large intestine is to re-absorb the fluids that are in the 'left-overs' coming out of the small intestine. Without that organ, everything he eats is going to come through 'as is' after the small intestine has done it's job of absorbing the nutrients. Once the colon 'extracts' the water, the rest of the colon then compacts the mass and forms stool.
Avatar f tn I am 20y/o,female.for the past two weeks, i have been defecating with large amt of bright red blood. I am planning to see a doctor but i am afraid of the diagnostic tests. Colonoscopy sounds terrifying to me. Is it painful? Will it take long recovery period? Is it too invasive?
Avatar f tn Have 3 large polyps on right side of colon got to have surgery is there any concerns?
Avatar m tn my mom had a surgery 3 years ago, and her large intestine hs been removed. She has diarrea all the time, and sometimes can´t get to the bethroom, is there a medicine that can help her?
974371 tn?1424653129 In fact I had at least three colonoscopies in one year to remove upper polyps (or one large polyp) and the doctor needed to take care not to break through the colon wall (best I can remember as to why he didn't do it on one surgery). I was lucky the large growth/polyp (is a cancerous polyp a tumor?) was benign. I had colonoscopies every year then for two or three years, each year polyps were removed.
Avatar m tn I was really hoping to wake up to good news and a clean bill of health. Instead, he found 20 small polyps. My heart sank. 16 of these were in the ascending colon. I was still groggy, and I need to have a follow up visit after the biopsies come back, but he said it’s possible I may have to have that part of the colon removed somewhere down the line. Has anyone else had a problem with polyps like this? I am at the very beginning of researching this.
Avatar n tn Hi, you did not mention the diameter of your polyps. Small polyps can be missed in the first colonoscopy. Also, it depends on whether you've been eating healthy (red meat and low vitamin D speed the growth). Finally, you might ask your doctor to do a genetic testing if they keep growing in large numbers. You also didn't mention where the polyps were found.
Avatar n tn removed 5 polyps, one which was abnormally large. They were sent for bioyopsy. What kind of risk am I for colon cancer? I have severe constipation, bleeding rectally and in stools, bloating most of the time, extremely gasy, and suffer from acid reflux.
Avatar f tn Has anyone had there large intestine removed and had their small intestine attached to their rectum for colonic inertia and ended up with constipation after surgery? I heard that is a risk factor. That you can get the surgery but there might be a chance you will have constipation again one day. Also has anyone had their large intestine removed for colonic inertia and then their small intestine eventually give out on them?
Avatar f tn I am 41yrs old and having my large intestine removed and my small intestine attached to my rectum.....I am very nearvous just for the fact that I work at a place that I can't just get up and walk away from my desk.(Police Department) to use the bathroom! Do you get any kind of warning or does it hit all of a sudden? The Dr adivsed that I would lose about 5lbs after they remove my intestine and probably much more after....has anybody had that?
Avatar f tn The reason the doc went straight to naming your digestive issues diverticulosis, could be as he went through the beginning of the large intestine, he may have seen some corrosion there, and when he couldn't make it further along because of inflammation and swelling, then it was an automatic leap he took in concluding diverticulosis.
