Avatar f tn I also am allergic to pennecillan drugs and mycin drugs and never have had a problem with taking the Diamox 500mg two times daily. Hope this helps you.
Avatar f tn Although some sulfa-sensitive people can take these drugs without problem, they do contain ingredients closely related to sulfa and it is possible to have an adverse reaction. (It's kind of like the chicken pox/shingles relationship.) Safer alternatives are usually available for those with known allergies. Whatever caused the exploding heart scenario, I'm glad you're OK Udkas and hope you find some answers, expecially ones that feel better instead of worse!
203342 tn?1328737207 The pharmacy noticed I had an allergic reaction to sulfa before and said that Celebrex contains sulfa in it. I told them I just broke out in a rash so they gave me the prescription. Now I'm wondering if I should take it and risk a break out again or take the Motrin and hope things will be ok with that. I just don't know what's best! As you can see, this is a bit of a quandary. I'm hoping the good doctor on here might be able to help me out? What should I do? Thank you so much.
Avatar f tn Hi, Ethacrynic acid is diuretic that do not contain sulfa. It is used to treat high blood pressure and fluid retention. It also causes the kidneys to get rid of unneeded water and salt from the body into the urine. Before taking any medication, it is best that you discuss this with your doctor first. Take care and regards.
Avatar f tn A sulfite reaction is different from a sulfonamide allergy (a reaction to sulfa drugs) because sulfites and sulfonamides are entirely different chemicals and have unrelated mechanisms of reaction. A person sensitive to sulfites is no more likely to be allergic to sulfonamides than any other individual and vice versa. " http://www.itmonline.org/arts/sulfa.
1770925 tn?1365618522 What are your neurological symptoms and has a physician correctly attributed them to sulfa drugs? There is no known peripheral neuropathy with the use of cephalexim, particularly short-term use. You can also check with the pharmacist. Sulfa drugs can cause allergies and hypersensitivity reactions, one particular one is steven johnson’s where you can get reddish purple rashes all over the body. Neurological complications known are dizziness, hallucinations etc. Wishing you all the best.
Avatar f tn I would say that it potentially could be caused by the sulfa medication. Sulfa drugs have an effect on every body system. If it continues, call the doctor that prescribed to make sure he/she doesn't want to see you.
Avatar dr m tn Jim my brother uses Celebrex and he has a lot of success with it. I myself took Vioxx for 4 year for fibromyalgia and had tremendous success until it was taken off the market. I can't take Celebrex because I think it has sulfa in it and I am allergic. It has been known to have serious side affects however again some people do very well on it. I wish I could try it. What is RZ Rhizotomy? I've had 7 back and cervical surgeries so I am well aware of what that pain is like.
Avatar m tn I am undergoing a shoulder replacement, and one of the drugs he recommended is Celebrex, among many other drugs building up to surgery. I have had ulcerative colitis, and have had a total colectomy. I therefore do not have a colon or spline, but I know anti inflamatories do not agree with my gut. I am having surgery April 8, and quite frankly I don't know what to do. Can anyone help with suggestions?
Avatar m tn I started to itch so my doctor told me to discontinue it because I am allergic to Sulfa drugs. I have been itching on my thighs, arms, face, hands, ears and elbows. My eyes also swell when I scratch I see bruises. What could possibly be wrong with me.. My blood work was normal.
Avatar m tn I have been on methotrexate and celebrex for at least 15 years, probably long. I am currently in a tremendous amount of pain in my fingers, elbows, shoulders, left knee and left hip. Volteran gel has not helped at all and neither has Aleve. Can I take tramadol with these two drugs? I have recently switched my insurance and am waiting to get into a new rheumatologist.
Avatar f tn The structure is very specific, and although many other drugs may contain sulfur, oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen and a benzene ring, they are not "sulfa" drugs unless they are arranged as the "sulfa" chain. The original sulfa drugs were antibiotics. My concern is this doctor seems to be in a rush to either do RAI or surgery. He really didn't want to do the surgery because she is getting married in almost a year to this date. I'm scared to death about the RAI.
Avatar f tn Celebrex may cause an increased risk of serious cardiovascular thrombotic events, myocardial infarction, and stroke, which can be fatal. All nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may have a similar risk. This risk may increase with duration of use. It is my opinion that each of us have to research the medications we take and make our own decisions based on that research and our comfort levels.
Avatar f tn Other drugs which can cause photoallergy are phenothiazines, chlorpromazine, sulfa products, and NSAIDs etc. I suggest you to consult physician for other alternatives. Take care and regards.
Avatar f tn Still trying to get the dosages and combination of drugs right and may be going to Enbrel or Humira soon.
Avatar n tn not so much against Gonorrhea. However, resistance to sulfa drugs has steadily increased and typically treatment for one includes treatment for the other.. and today Chlamydia is usually treated with doxycycline.
Avatar f tn Doxycycline is not related to amoxicillin and sulfa drugs as it belongs to a different category of drugs(tetracyclines).Side effects of doxycycline are headache, dizziness, blurred vision, body aches, flu symptoms, skin rashes, chest tightness, respiratory difficulty, nausea, vomiting etc. I strongly advise you to ask your daughter to stop taking doxycycline so that no life threatening anaphylaxis occurs.
Avatar m tn If methionine is SULFUR and I am allergic to SULFA - two different things, then why would I need to worry about having the liptropic injection? I have had 2 injections so far, with no issues but I know SULFA stays in your system quite awhile and can accumulate to the point where I would have a reaction at some point so if there are even trace amounts of SULFA (not SULFUR) in methionine then I could end up having a reaction.
Avatar f tn Something else to think about is that they warn you that if you are allergic to sulfonamides you should not take drugs like Celebrex since they do contain sulfonamides. Celebrex, Bextra and another one on the market that I can't think of right now fall into this category.
Avatar f tn 1. Yes, it is true that you will not necessarily have a reaction to HCTZ if you have a sulfa allergy. A small percentage of people (< 15%) do have cross-reactivity to HCTZ when they have a sulfa allergy. If you have had a severe reaction to sulfa antibiotics then we would probably recommend avoiding HCTZ.
Avatar f tn I just wanted to mention that since you took bacterim (sulfamethoxazole trimethoprim) which is a sulfa drug and clindamycin is a different class of drugs. Sulfa drugs are known to cause allergies in many people. It was probably that drug but could be both. So be careful to not use any sulfa drugs or clinidamycin.
Avatar n tn Drugs like penicillin and sulfa group of drugs are most common cause for hypersensitivity reaction. As you have a history of penicillin allergy. If your body is hypersensitive to sulfa, reaction will be similar to that you develop for penicillin. Each individual are known to respond to a drug differently in drug allergy. If the drug is too much sensitized then it can cause more severe reaction.
Avatar n tn She is 64 but she also has osteoporosis and arthritis in her lower back. The back doctor just prescribed Celebrex, is this the safest drug for her? Also what should people with Hep C do to better care for their liver eventhough so far she seems to have a healthy liver. For the osteoporosis she is on Fosamax. She has been on it for several years. I am just afraid that too many potent drugs can be harmful for her liver.
Avatar f tn Are you, by any chance, allergic to sulfa drugs? My sister had a similar reaction to hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ), and the doctor said it was because she was allergic to sulfa. My sister had not put her sulfa allergy on her medical history form at the cardiologist's office, because the sulfa reaction had been so long ago. When the doctor prescribed HCTZ, which evidently has sulfa in it, my sister reacted to that.
Avatar f tn No, it would be unheard of for Celebrex to damage your heart valve. Celebrex and similar drugs do cause high blood pressure in many individuals, though. You might have gone forever and not known about the heart valve if you had not gotten high blood pressure from the Celebrex. Follow whatever advice the cardiologist gave you, and don't worry.
