Dutasteride or Avodart prevents the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in the body. DHT is involved in the development of benign prostatic hyperplasia.
This medicine helps improve urinary flow and may also reduce your need for prostate surgery later on.
However, it is recommended that you take this medication exactly as it was prescribed for you. Do not take the medication in larger amounts, or take it for longer than recommended by your doctor.
Finally, the burning sensation began when I started taking Avodart AND Depo Testosterone injections concomittantly, just over three years ago.
When I developed gynecomastia (which is minor and I ignore) I lowered the dose of AVODART to one twice a week which is 8/month (from 15/month). AVODART has a long half life. Will 8/month still work? I wrote to GLaxo who make Avodart and they said what you said "ask your physician". My physician is very busy and I don't want to waste his time. My next appointment is in June and I will ask at that time if I don't have an answer by then.
Propose that your partner try Avodart. I think it really helps with prostate enlargement. That is what the television commercials say anyhow.
Unfortunately it also can cause a large reduction in semen production.
AND women wanting to become pregnant should NEVER touch the pill as it can cause birth defects if they are exposed at all to it.

I'm 68 years old and have had Cataracts for over 2 years. I've been taking Avodart for over a year. Should I stop taking Avodart and wait awhile before cataract surgery or will the informed Dr be able to work with my eyes? I've never taken Flomax and have heard the warnings from the commercial and read about Flomax. I'm concerned about any complications.
I'm also pretty active. Can I still swim after surgery and what are the chances of the lens shifting or coming loose?
Can his disease cause this problem possibly low levels testosterone? I want to do all i can so he doesnt feel self conscious.
Even getting older an cause it, smoking, taking various medications (not just avodart), gaining weight, etc. Do you find you also have erectile dysfunction? Avodart, unfortunately, is associated with these side effects. It's unclear though how long they will last. What does your doctor say? What prompted starting the med? Your psa looks pretty good.
I am not a doctor but I can tell you that most woman that have higher level of testosterone suffer from PCOS. I have a higher level of testosterone and i have had PCOS all of my life.. but was diagnose in 2001. You should go to your doctor and ask to be tested for PCOS.. Good luck..
Again, low SHBG and insulin resistance are implied, so that you could be a candidate for type II diabetes, which could affect T levels, so that better to check the blood sugar levels also, especially since you started getting problems of late only.You should also check up your thyroid levels, estrogen, LH, prolactin, and adrenal levels to confirm none of those are responsible for your low T levels.

The normal testosterone levels in males vary between 260 -1080 ng/dl/ 8.8 - 36.7 nmol/l. Though these may slightly lower with age, the average values remain more or less the same.

You could be oozing with total testosterone and still be deficient if you also have high levels of binding globulin. Normal levels of bioavailable testosterone are 2.00 to 8.60 nmol/L. That's it. Everything else is irrelevant.
observation if another biopsy done in 04/09 shows increase in positive cores to 3 or more or if any one core shows 50%+ positive for cancer? Also, is there any current opinion regarding use of Avodart or Proscar while in Watchful Waiting mode? I understand there would be a likely reduction in PSA, but that new PSA baseline be established and return to monitoring of PSA velocity. Not sure what, if any, benefit this would provide.
Yesterday I went to his office and he reviewed the results carefully. Luckily, I do not have PCOS. The blood work only revealed high levels of testosterone (although still within the normal range). I have noticed that my libido is usually pretty high. That does not bother me, quite the opposite :). My main problem is facial hair (upper lip, sideburns, and some chin), as well as increased body hair. I know that without it I would be a happier person.

There is no evidence that I know of that heart disease would lead to low testosterone levels. There are, as you mentioned, studies that show that low testosterone levels can increase heart disease risk. However, we don't yet have strong evidence that testosterone replacement in patients with heart disease improves survival or reduces heart attacks, etc.
I did inform the Doctor I have been tired lately so he ordered blood work to check hormone levels. Turns out my testosterone level is low. Actually looked at my bloodwork records just prior to tumor removal and all hormone levels were WAY OFF - They have all seemed to come back to normal levels with the exception of my testosterone. My surgeon is referring me to a endocrinologist. Working on making an appointment now.
