Common Questions and Answers about Alternatives to singulair for children

singulair

Avatar m tn i just wanted to post a warning to other parents. my son was on singulair for over 3 years. he was taking the drug for treatment of mild asthma and allergies. he suffered from undetected side effects for 3 years. the side effects were sneaky and subtle and i did not pick up on the cause. at the age of 7, his physician increased his dosage to 5mg due to his age. after that increase, his side effects became loud and clear.
460830 tn?1347219306 Singulair could cause depression & suicide for some people that used it.
Avatar m tn On a side note, I just want to say that as parents we try so hard to do what is best for our children. We reasearched Singulair when our son was first prescribed it and found none of the information now noted in their website. The link to suicide, depression and other behavioral problems and Singulair, although known by the manufacturer and the FDA for several months was not mentioned by either until recently and notices were not sent to all Pharmacists and Dr.s.
Avatar n tn If she gets upset, there is nothing we can do to snap her out of it. Sometimes I do something to distract her and she forgets that she was mad. She says mean things to her sister and grandmother. If she gets in the "zone" nothing I tell her phases her. She will not follow directions and does not care if she gets spanked. Whenshe is not in the "zone" she is very loving and very delightful. She has no learning issues. She attends a gifted and talented school.
Avatar f tn What do you find Singulair did for you? I found that, for me, it did nothing.
Avatar f tn From your message, you appear to have an intolerance to the so-called non-sedating anti-histamines but hopefully will be able to take Singulair; it is a good drug for nasal allergies and also, for a fair number of people, effective treatment for asthma. And it is safe, not a cause of significant liver disease, and not associated with other side effects, deemed serious. To the best of our current knowledge, the long term use of a nasal steroid, as directed, does not pose a problem.
556935 tn?1215720270 Everything we have read says that it has not been evaluated for safety and effectiveness in children and is not generally prescribed for them. What we need to know is, is it ok for her to take them? Should we take her to see another Doctor and have something else given to her or should my husband speak to her counselor about the supposed symptoms, since they aren't something that we have ever encountered when she has been with us? Please give us some advice.
Avatar m tn hav been taking singulair for 3 years. Cramps in fingers, throat and leg occured common. Shoulders drooped. Standing and sitting posture gone really bad. Extreme tiredness 24X7. Always thirsty even after gulping bottles of water. Inactive physically and mentally. Become even more inferior in social gatherings and activities. Can't even meet minimum commitments and thus affects career and personal, family relationships. After dropping Everything became normal after 8 - 10 days.
Avatar f tn I am so happy for your son. I can not understand why doctors don't seem to know about [or acknowledge] these side effects. I HATE the way they look at you like you are crazy!!! I will tell my daughter not to give up hope and to keep searching for a new doctor and new medicine. Thanks so much.
Avatar n tn I was taking Singulair for just 5 days for and upper respiratory cold and began having tingling and numbness in my extremities. I stopped immediately. My question is, after eliminating all other possible causes (through a number of tests including MRIs, blood work, metals testing) with my doctor, I still have numbness, tingling and burning taking place in my legs and arms for 3 months now. Has anyone experienced such long term effects? If so, what can be done if anything?
1580703 tn?1651904887 I was diagnosed with acute asthma last year and have been on symbicort/proventil for months, also singulair and took prednisone and methylprenisolone and I am still having breathing problems and chest tightness. taking some HC lately helped me breathe better and relax but still having breathing problems today. can you please help me??
Avatar f tn Anytime -- glad to help .. two of my children have been asthmatics for a very long time coupled with severe allergies.
Avatar f tn I have alot to say about Singulair but none of it is good, unfortunately. My son was on Singulair for 3 yrs. I finally recognized the side effects he was having and discontinued. He suffered from leg pain, stomach pain, irritability, anxiety, quick to tears, easily frustrated and excessively fearful. At the age of 7, his dosage was increased to 5mg. At that point, it became very clear he was suffering side effects. All of the side effects I mentioned above were multipled x 10.
Avatar f tn Does anyone know of any alternatives to pain medication? I'm sick of taking pills and I don't like the idea of a pump injecting me with medication. Besides physical therapy what else is there?
Avatar n tn Her Pulmonary dr. put her on Singulair for a month and gave her an inhaler for emergencies. The Singulair has given her a stomach ache, nausea, for over 2 weeks now. We are waiting on a visit to a different Pulmonologist, as requested by the pediatrician. It doesn't sound like allergies or asthma that I have heard other people describe. Her pediatrician said it could be sinus drip or reflux, yet again she has no other symptoms. Any thoughts?
Avatar m tn I do not have health insurance and have an alternative source for medications. Would it be advisable for me to purchase Singulair for 3 months to get me through those three months next year. This year was a bit difficult without it.
Avatar m tn So sorry to hear that. Is he being seen by a pulmonary specialist? Is he taking any sort of preventative medications apart from ventoIin? He obviously needs to have his asthma controlled. I do know that they don't like to over medicate children on steroid puffers. But I do believe they are allowed up to 400ug/day safely before any side effects become apparent, such as slowed growth. Does he have a lot of air born allergies?
Avatar f tn I have been taking Singulair for a few months now and I haven't noticed any negative side effect. I take it along with a daily inhaler for my asthma and it really has helped me a lot.
Avatar n tn My allergiest prescribed Singulair for my season allergies not for PLE. But trust me it works! I have suffered with this for 20 years. Good luck!
Avatar f tn I have had bad experiences with epiderals with my last pregnancy the epideral tube got stuck in my back and the nurse was quiet rough trying to get it out. I was wondering if there are any other alternatives that i should try.
Avatar n tn s really been struggling with breathing problems. He went to a different pulmonologist that put him back on Singulair, Advair (bigger dosage), Provetil (rescue inhaler), Claritin, and a drug for acid reflux--starts with 'o' but I can't remember the name. Anyway, after 2 days on this new regimen (hasn't started taking the Claritin though) the itching started. Has anyone else had this experience with Singulair?
Avatar m tn I have minor back problems and am seeking alternatives for pain medication during delivery instead of an epidural?
Avatar n tn Long-term use comes with serious side effects both for adults and for children, but more serious for children. If you are concerned ask your doctor for effective non-steroidal substitutes. I got off inhales steroids three years ago after suffering health problems caused by it. I now use natural anti-inflammatories plus nebulized albuterol and an anti-histamine.
Avatar f tn My 2 year old son acquired severe RSV at 6 weeks old. Ever since then he now has virally induced asthma. So he's been hospitalized a few times with bronchiolitis when he was 1 years old. The typical treatment has been 2ce a day pulmicort and 3xs a day to every 4 hours of albuterol. If that didn't work they would add predisone and sometimes zithromax. And those combos knocked it out. Well he now has 3 weeks of a rattling cough that just doesn't go away.
