Common Questions and Answers about Alendronate vs calcitonin minimizing fractures osteoporosis

fosamax

Avatar m tn The prescription drug Fosamax (the generic is alendronate sodium) is a medication which has been prescribed to hundreds of thousands of postmenopausal women to treat osteoporosis and help increase bone mass thereby reducing the chance of spinal or non-spinal fractures. Fosamax has also been prescribed to increase bone mass in men with osteoporosis. Brand name Fosamax is manufactured in the United States by Merck Sharp & Dohme Corp., a subsidiary of Merck & Co., Inc.
Avatar m tn Osteoporosis is usually painless until a fraction takes place, and osteoporosis is a major contributing factor to bone fracture, including hip fractures, which are more common as people age. There are almost 2 million hip fractures annually around the world. While in the U.S., osteoporosis affects an estimated 26 million Americans, and more than 20 million are women, it is vastly undiagnosed.
Avatar f tn t familiar with the ranges, normal is -1 to 1. Osteopenia is -1 to -2.5. Less than -2.5 is Osteoporosis when fractures can occur spontaneously, after small bumps and so on. As far as I can see there aren't a lot of reports of fractures. The study says almost all subjects on IFN/Riba combination therapy experienced bone density loss. http://www.natap.org/2008/HCV/022008_02.htm For those that are currently treating there might be something that can be done to minimise it.
Avatar n tn Do you mean Fosamax (alendronate)? If you do, its for treating bone problems like Osteoperosis by adding bone mass and slows bone loss. I use it for Osteopenia.
Avatar f tn Stress fractures themselves are not indicative of osteoporosis. Fragility fractures-- which include a fracture of the hip, pelvis, wrist, spine, or shoulder sustained during a fall from standing height-- are concerning for osteoporosis. It is probably worth a baseline screening with a DXA scan, along with a basic panel of labs evaluating for possible secondary causes of low bone density/recurrent stress fractures. If nothing else, this will provide reassurance.
Avatar f tn I know that osteoporosis can lead to high risk of stress fractures, but I had a bone scan done (as part of a study I was in unrelated to MS) and I'm surprisingly good in that area.
Avatar f tn Doctor gave me an antibiotic but again next week it recurs. Body aches mostly knees and ankles [ i suffer through osteoporosis and joint pains too but the pains were not troublesome earlier] Can anyone tell is it viral or anything else.
Avatar f tn I am healthy 27 year old female who has suffered several fractures recently. My doctor sent me for a dexy bone scan which has revealed I have Osteopenia. I have a well balanced diet with lots of calcium intake. I do not smoke. I am waiting to see a specialist but in the meantime can you give me any advice and information as to what treatment they will treat me with. Your advice is much appreciated.
Nicelady Teriparatide (Forteo) is also approved for the treatment of postmenopausal women who have severe osteoporosis and are considered at high risk for fractures. The medicine is given through daily shots underneath the skin and you can give these shots even at home. Another advantage is that it can be given in patients who cannot tolerate oral biphosphonate drugs.
Avatar n tn the most common side effects seen with ARIMIDEX include hot flashes, joint symptoms, weakness, mood changes, pain, sore throat, nausea and vomiting, depression, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, swelling of arms/legs, and headache. Fractures (including fractures of the spine, hip, and wrist) occurred more frequently with ARIMIDEX than with tamoxifen (10% vs 7%). As for the burning...I,personally,have never been able to use anything but Ivory. Allergies.
294425 tn?1288528395 Hey Guys, just a quick question. Have any of you been diagnosed with severe osteoporosis? I just found out last week that I have it really bad - they said they almost never see numbers this bad in someone my age. (I'll be 47 in May.) My bones are worse than my mom's, and she's 75! I am at extremely high risk for fractures now, especially in my hips, spine and wrists.
Avatar f tn Should I be worried that something worse is happening in my back, or could I have just irritated the old fractures somehow. Pain is 9/10 when it comes. Side note, I also have osteoporosis at 30 years old, female. Could this be a worse complication of the fractures, or is it not a big deal? Thank you in advance.
Avatar n tn How do you know if you are post menopausal? I am 49 years old and I was diagnosed with IBC in June of 07. I was not post menopausal. but then, I never had another period after I started the chemotherapy. I also take Tamoxifen since February 08. Does this definitely mean I am post menopausal?
Avatar m tn On the shown bones are visible "Periarticular osteoporosis of small joints in metatarsophalangeal stage" and "chronic metatarso-phalangeal inflammatory changes of the joint of the big toe". Visit orthopedist. Is this something bad or could it turn into something bad? Should i go visit an orthopedist?
Avatar f tn As I have osteoporosis besides hep b, I have been taking Actonel 35mg for 5 years with little improvements and my doctor added now Evister for about 6 months. But I feel that those medicines are not helping me at all and may be they are damaging my already infected liver. So I decided to drop them and take instead vitamin k-2 (Menatetrenone (MK-4)) and I found this article and similar ones in internet. http://www.aor.ca/assets/Research/pdf/Advances_10_May_2006_Menatetrenone.
Avatar n tn They are reportedly facing complains like osteoporosis in patients over 50yrs age and possiblities of hip fractures. PPIs are not recommended on a permanent basis. However some physicians do.
Avatar n tn this has been going on for about 2 weeks now. What could be causing this? I also have reduced bone density and Osteoporosis.
Avatar n tn Although some patients have reported this type of pain which very often are due to anterior tibial stress fractures, it is a rare cause leg pain. Stress fractures occur as a result of frequent stressing of a bone with compression or stretch. Abrupt increases in the duration, frequency, or intensity of physical activity without sufficient rest is thought to lead to an imbalance between bone resorption and formation. This results in microfractures that can coalesce into stress fractures.
1797743 tn?1389213685 I just finished listening to a podcast with Janie Bowthorpe and she discusses Dessicated thyroid hormone meds vs the typical stuff we've been prescribed. she menitoned a few of the sublingual versions and I was wondering if anyone has tried these and what your opinion is of them. The podcast was great and very imformative. Now I have a lot of questions for my doc.
Avatar f tn This study did not focus on other sites of fracture common with osteoporosis, including wrist or spinal compression fractures. It did not delve into how many individuals had developed bone loss - only fractures. Another study focused on 194 women who took the thyroid hormone for more than 20 years. Women had significantly lower bone mineral density in forearm, hip, and low back than those who did not take levothyroxine.
