1797743 tn?1389213685 I just finished listening to a podcast with Janie Bowthorpe and she discusses Dessicated thyroid hormone meds vs the typical stuff we've been prescribed. she menitoned a few of the sublingual versions and I was wondering if anyone has tried these and what your opinion is of them. The podcast was great and very imformative. Now I have a lot of questions for my doc.
Avatar f tn Women who cannot tolerate estrogen are sometimes treated with salmon calcitonin, available in parenteral and nasal spray. Commonly drugs known as bisphosphonates are used, which inhibit osteoclast-mediated bone resorbtion. Another drug called alendronate has also been apoproved. My only point in mentioning these treatments is to reassure that a diagnosis does not mean one should give o hope or become depressed.
Avatar f tn I took my first dose of Alendronate and then experience significant muscle pain for the next 4 days. Does anyone know if I should expect this to happen each time I take it or is it something to happen for the first few times until my body adjusts to the medicine?
Avatar n tn Do you mean Fosamax (alendronate)? If you do, its for treating bone problems like Osteoperosis by adding bone mass and slows bone loss. I use it for Osteopenia.
Avatar m tn The prescription drug Fosamax (the generic is alendronate sodium) is a medication which has been prescribed to hundreds of thousands of postmenopausal women to treat osteoporosis and help increase bone mass thereby reducing the chance of spinal or non-spinal fractures. Fosamax has also been prescribed to increase bone mass in men with osteoporosis. Brand name Fosamax is manufactured in the United States by Merck Sharp & Dohme Corp., a subsidiary of Merck & Co., Inc.
Avatar n tn thyroxine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3), and calcitonin. Why are patients who have thyroidectomies only prescribed replacement therapy for thyroxine? I would think that if the body use to produce the other two hormones, they are important as well. This discussion is related to Thyroidectomy.
Avatar m tn The authors examined the effects of high-dose oral alendronate (40 mg daily) for 6 months on 3 adult patients with intractable headache due to fibrous dysplasia of the skull. Each patient had disease processes not amenable to surgery. The patients underwent clinical follow-up at 1, 3, and 6 months. Their pain levels were documented at each visit by using a visual analog scale. All 3 patients demonstrated a significant decrease in pain levels and became independent of scheduled analgesics.
Avatar n tn One cannot conclude that a patient with primary hyperpara and an incidental adrenal adenoma has MEN. Certainly testing for pheo needs to be done. Blood tests for calcitonin as well as neck ultrasound can help screen for a thyroid nodule - which you appear to have. FNA biopsy should be done. MTC is not 100% w/ MEN. www.endocrineweb.com may be a useful site.
Avatar n tn the endocrinologist did a serem calcitonin level which was 225 and the rest of the thyroid study was normal.....so it was suggested to me I have my thyroid removed.....he said the FNA usually are not reliable.......whould I jump to have this removed.......jonistone This discussion is related to Complex cyst thyroid nodule surgey only option.
143746 tn?1301274822 Looks like I'm three years late on this, but there have been recent studies that link calcitonin to cerebral vasodilation. Calcitonin is a hormone released by your parathyroid glands and was previously thought to only play a minor role in calcium absorption. However, it has been shown that calcitonin also causes the blood vessels in your brain to dilate (cerebral vasodilation) which is the primary causal mechanism for migraines. So, yes. The parathyroidectomy is causing your migraines.
Avatar f tn my doctor noticed that my thyroid felt full so she ordered blood tests, all my bloodwork was completely normal, tsh, t3,t4, thyrogloubin, calcitonin. Only my thyroid peroxidase was slightly abnormal (41). is there a chance i have cancer?
Avatar n tn My sister (42 years old when diagnosed) has Medullary Thyroid Cancer. They originally thought she had Graves Disease, but when they removed her thyroid, they found the cancer during routines biopsies. She has had her second surgery to remove the lymph nodes in both sides of her neck and to do the disection of the right side tissues. During that surgery they had to remove the jugular vein on the right side as it was taken over by the cancer.
Avatar f tn I'm 48 yr old woman, had chest ct for chest pain (ct was clear) except dr saw thyroid nodule on the film Ultrasound "Occupying almost the entire left thyroid lobe is a most unusual mass" 4.24x1.29x1.93 cm. Its center contains a branched water density structure. There are linear water density markings that radiate thru the echogenic solid tissue at the periphery. Solid tissue is less echogenic than adjacent thyroid. Is abundant peripheral & superficial vascularity.
Avatar n tn ve also experienced sporadic pain that radiated from the LL to LR each month like clockwork. I eventually got a root canal and crown on one side. Health wise, my calcitonin levels are elevated but my TSH levels are normal. I take synthroid daily, brush, floss, rinse. Could there be a correlation between thyroid hormone levels and tooth decay. I admit to having extensive dental work, but I've never had this amount of deteriation over the past two years.
Avatar m tn In 2007, I had my thyroid checked and my results from my October 2007 Ultrasound were: Findings: Left lobe of thyroid gland measures 4.8 x 1.4 x 1.5 cm. Echo texture is fairly homogeneous as well. There is a hypoechoic tiny nodule measuring 0.2 x 0.2 x 0.2 cm in the medial aspect of the thyroid gland. Additionally in the lateral aspect of the thyroid there is a 0.6 x 0.5 x 0.4 cm hypoechoic nodule not seen on prior examination.
Avatar f tn I am also taking Aromasin for bc. Stopped alendronate (I am osteopenic due to 30 yrs of prednisolone and Arimidex) in case this caused the oesophagitis. Would appreciate your advice.
Avatar m tn The harder the cells work, the harder the organs work. The calcitonin hormone works together with the parathyroid hormone to regulate calcium levels in the body. Levels of hormones secreted by the thyroid are controlled by the pituitary gland's thyroid-stimulating hormone, which in turn is controlled by the hypothalamus.
502219 tn?1311357910 This is very very rare -- one could do a thyroid ultrasound and serum calcitonin (as medullary thyroid cancer was reportedly more common in Byetta users).
Avatar f tn thankyou,i am with contact of my doctor ,he said there is no solution for damaged vertibras, but calcium and vitiman d and alendronate sodium/cholecaiciferol tablets will help spine and bones from further damages but what to do with prednisones i cant stop them because of asthma and taking of them will damage other bones isnt there any other solution instead of prednisones, i know there is nothing accept these because my doctor told me:(

Avatar f tn Osteoporosis medications like Raloxifene (Evista), alendronate (Fosomax), risendronate (Actonel) and ibandronate (Boniva) all can cause flu like symptoms in individuals that are taking them. I am not sure what medications you are on, but this could be your problem.
1157646 tn?1343967128 Proper vitamin D levels cause the serum calcium to convert to calcitonin with ionized calcium is its by-product (I think I have that right). Vitamin K2 enhances the absorption of calcitonin into your bones. If the serum calcium isn't being converted, your body can't store it and it is flushed (urinated) out to prevent excess build-up.
Avatar f tn I believe Stella changed her initial photo and description of new VS old Armour. I some some left over reformulated Armour from August that says TE on it. A physical difference is the reformulated will not split well with a pill splitter. The filler change that works as an 'adhesive' will make the pill fall apart or into several pieces 9 out of 10 tries. The old ones split evenly and easily almost every time.
Avatar m tn Other causes of hot flashes are infections like HIV and tuberculosis. Use of medications like Nifedipine and Calcitonin and certain antibiotics are few other causes of hot flashes. Sometimes food containing monosodium glutamate can cause hot flashes. It is advisable to consult a physician and get evaluated. A clinical examination and work up may be extremely helpful. Take care and best wishes!
Avatar m tn Others like denosumab and calcitonin are also used for therapy. Please discuss this with your doctor am sure he will provide further assistance. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
Avatar n tn I have this issue too and the doctors refuse to believe how lactose intolerant I am! It's weird, but their first response is always to stop taking supplements and drink less milk...hmmmm. I've never had anyone tell me why, but thanks to estrelinha I think we both found some reasons! :) Good luck and post if you find out why.
