Zyprexa for dementia

Common Questions and Answers about Zyprexa for dementia

Avatar n tn She was hospitalized in a geropych unit for 16 days. She is now on Zyprexa 5 mg BID, it has been about 1 month of treatment. She is much better, no hallucinations/paranoia/anxiety. She also takes Lexapro, Aricept and Trazadone (for sleep) - these all are relatively new in the last 3 to 4 weeks. I would like to get her off the Zyprexa. Do you suggest tapering her off or not?
Avatar f tn She was not sedated at all, regained her sense of humor and enjoyed life fore several more years before the dementia took her. Alzheimer's is a 24 hour a day nightmare for the caregivers. Most medical professionals don't "get it". I wish you all the best with your mom.

874521 tn?1424120397 Eli Lilly, the pharmaceutical company that manufactures it, was discovered illegally marketing Zyprexa as a treatment for dementia in elderly patients. The risk of death was significantly increased in these populations, and the company knew the risks definitely did not outweigh the benefits, and the drug wasn't effective in these populations.
Avatar n tn In 1998 my husband underwent whole brain radiation for treatment of brain tumor with dx of stage iv melanoma (no primary was ever found). About 5 years ago he began to exhibit behavior changes which have gotten worse since then. He is delusional, on disability and is taking Zyprexa, Amantadine, Namenda, Cymbalta and excelon patch. Still, he seems to worsen. He now has symptoms of Parkinsons with balance issues. He is 55 years old - much to young to be this dibilitated.
Avatar f tn From what I'm researching, those symptoms would be typical for someone suffering from dementia of the multi-infarct type, which he has been diagnosed with June, 08.
Avatar m tn Haldol is a major medication and some ppl just do not tolerate it let alone the addition of .Zyprexa. Zyprexa (Olanzapine) which is a medication that is used to treat schizophrenia and acute manic episodes associated with bipolar I disorder. It is also in a drug class known as atypical anti-psychotics. It can take weeks for their systems to return to normal if it is from the medications. Sometimes it is just a matter of days.
Avatar f tn My mother has gone from Parkinsons to Parkinsonism after receiving Zyprexa and now dementia at 87 years of age. She receives 15 mg of zyprexa at noon with sinemet and Tylenol 3. Doesn't the codeine intensify the sinemet and cause stronger hallucinations?Does Zyprexa ever cause hallucinations? Did the Zyprexa cause Parkinsonism? Does the codeine cause permanent damage to the brain and cause dementia? She has type 2 diabetes as well as cardio issues.
Avatar m tn Here in the states, due to stroke increase risk, Zyprexa is not recommended for those with dementia related psychosis, which my mom has. Clonazepam's side effects and long-term effects look pretty scary, behaviors my mom already exhibits and that we don't want aggravated. I will ask her doc tomorrow morning.
341205 tn?1195768670 I recently took 10mg of Zyprexa for the first time. I experienced vivid, visual hallucinations the entire night. It was very frightening. Is this a common side effect and would taking less be of any help? I have had Multiple Sclerosis for 24 years and experienced this same side effect when given Amantidine.
Avatar n tn Since then we have found that Risperdal caused severe side effects before reaching a therapeutic (working) dose, and Zyprexa, the second med used in an attempt to deal with delusions and hallucinations, is not working yet (we are at 6.25 mg/day at this time). Because of the sensitivity to the anti psychotics (although we need to give the Zyprexa more time), the psychs are wondering whether my wife does not have some other sort of dementia, and the name Lewy Bodies was mentioned.
Avatar m tn There are other options as regards treatment for dementia. For example I have known some people who have dementia who responded well to Namenda although each person responds differently to each medication. There are some concerns and contraindacations about the use of antipsychotics in people who are elderly and have dementia which would be noted on the medication websites. It would be important to find out why they considered the use of these medications to begin with.
Avatar n tn There may or may not be better choices than Haldol (newer agents such as Zyprexa, Seroquel) as far as risk for tardive dyskinesia (TD) is concerned. I hope this helps. As you know, this information is provided for your medical education. Specific comments regarding diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis must come from your doctor after appropriate evaluation.
Avatar f tn Plus it damages your thryoid. I take ciltalpram(celexa) and zyprexa and this combo has been great for my sex life.I am nice and stable and sex is better than ever. talk to your docs and get something else.
Avatar n tn It started by seeing people outside in the driveway, the woods, back yard. This went on for a few months. The doctor gave him zyprexa (spelling?) and three days into that drug the hallucinations got worst. He started seeing people inside the house. He started seeing objects in the house move. Such as figurines and things. He has been extremely paranoid since the surgery. He thinks that the people he sees are trying to steel his boat and trailer that are in the driveway.

Avatar f tn In 2006, doctors working on the same large study reported that the drugs were no more effective than placebos for most elderly patients being treated for dementia-related psychosis. Since then, several review articles have come to similar conclusions, and raised concern about a far more common side effect: weight gain. “When it comes to treating kids, these cardiac events are going to be rare,” said Dr. Jon McClellan, a psychiatrist at the University of Washington.
Avatar n tn Janssen's own propaganda explicitly states that Risperdal had only been approved for short-term administration following immediate manic episodes for a period of no longer than three weeks.

4415577 tn?1354233736 Oops, Zyprexa is also a neuroleptic, forgive me for saying Seroquil, both are neuroleptics.
Avatar n tn It has worked so well for for 6 years along with a therapist.. I would reccomend you using the antidepressanet to help get you past this time.also give them time for them to work. while you are housebound try doing some light exercise to get your seritonin levels up.Just turn on some music and dance to it for a few minutes. I will keep you prayers and keep posting to let me know how you are.
1450639 tn?1284923584 When a person is diagnosed with schizophrenia they need to take antipsychotics for their entire life generally. Zyprexa (from what I remember it and what I was informed) takes a while to build up a blood level. Rispedal is more short acting in how long it takes to work. They also when a person is elderly need to rule out other evident concerns such as dementia but only a psychiatrist would understand all this in full. You could look up schizophrenia.com for more information.
Avatar n tn I went there two times and had a CAT scan which came up negative but the doctor wanted to see me for follow up appointments which I never went to because I moved to the other side of the state (Minnesota). Anyway as time wore on it got worse and worse and by the time I was 17 it was in my whole body and worsened. At this time I began to experience bad anxiety almost like panic attacks and naturally my condition got even worse from this.
723341 tn?1232341853 He gave me Zyprexa. I took it for four days. That is not how many/most psychiatrists would handle it, from what ya'll have written here. Regardless, that's what he likes to do to bring patients down. After four days on Zyprexa, I was still a little hypo, but not like that day. I thought I was sliding into depression, but then I popped up again.
Avatar n tn I'm not going to fight with you anymore. Why? Because I know what is going on with you. I'm going to say this only once, because it only needs said once. I know what your trouble is and I pray that you can remain sober for another 7 months. Everyone has different situations and different situations call for different tactics. What works for me ain't going to work for you... and viceversa. I've been taking what I've been taking (it's listed earlier in this thread) for years now.
Avatar f tn Bipolar is a progressive illness - the symptoms and episodes grow with age and this is one of the major reasons why early diagnosis and treatment is important - Untreated bipolar's have a hugely increased risk of early onset dementia for one. Treatment and management are vital.
Avatar n tn different meds will work for different people.I take celexa/zyprexa for bi polar and it works great but it might not work for you.I went therough lots of meds before I got on this combo. So you have to find what works for you. be open and honest with your doc and tell them all your concerns there are lots of good meds out there. you just have to find the one that is best for you.
Avatar n tn So then they put me on seraquel, which I might ad is for people with bi-polar disorder and psychotic behaviour neither of which I have ever been diagnosed with. The only thing it did for me was made me sleep for 26, yeah 26 hours. And when I woke up I felt like **** for two days. Doctors today it seems to me are too worried about a handful of patients who abuse these benzodiazipines(valium, ativan klonipin etc.
Avatar n tn I have been on celexa and zyprexa for 6 years and I have been in a very good place in my life between the meds and the therapy.I felt pretty good up untill I got all this thryoid mess and thryoid cancer and hypo and hyper.I feel pretty good now with my levothyroxine at 175mcg.. If any one of you need to talk about bi polar I am happy to do so. Its been hell being bipolar all of my life and just beingdx in 98. but I am happyy to help.
