Zyprexa and liver function

Common Questions and Answers about Zyprexa and liver function

Avatar n tn I was pretty dependent on zyprexa to function... I went back to my psych, and manipulated him into giving me more zyprexa daily.. I felt I needed it, to sedate my day away. At that point, that's all I wanted. I was huge, and that much zyprexa had taken away all emotions, and feelings. So, He upped it to 20 mg's daily. To make a long story short, by the time I had had enough, I was taking 30-35 mg's daily, sleeping for 15 hours a day, and weighed 225lbs.
Avatar n tn He is on his second antidepresent called Elavil and now they are wanting to add Zyprexa to be taken with the Elavil. Lots of other sides but these seem to be the worse at the moment. Going into his 5th month of treatment. Pretty much a struggle the entire time. Today first day back to work in weeks. Viral counts almost undetectable, however the ALT and AST remain above the 150's. Much more to say but for now just needing feedback on this new drug they want to try.
Avatar m tn Lithium must be monitored for liver function every 3 months or so, and the test results specifically show how the liver is handling the lithium. Is there a test that would show how your liver enzymes are responding to a specific drug you're taking?
Avatar n tn I have been taking 5mg of klonipin a day for going on 6 years. I was diagnosed w/panic-attack anexiety disorder, and believe me, I had it bad. The next day....20 years of anexiety hell went away instantly. I also tried all the SSRI's and currently am on 150mg/day of Effexor, which seems to keep my moods fairly even. I think I can cut the klonipin use down to mabey 2mg/day, but I "freak" when I'm out and am concerned about liver damage from using this stuff. But HEY....
Avatar n tn also could this drug alter my brain function since I know it is used for bi-polar and seizure disorder... I'd like to know more about this med both from a neurologists view and from a weight loss specialists view.
Avatar n tn Hi, I have been on Effexor XR for 3 years and I have gained about 40-50pounds, most when my dose was increased to 225, now I am on 75mg b/c I'm getting ready to wean off the medicine in a couple of weeks, and I haven't lost anything yet. My eating habits have not changed and I exercise. I have always been underweight and I could eat whatever I wanted...I'm only 26 years old...I know my metabolism has changed some, but not enough to pack on 40 pounds.
Avatar n tn , Remeron 30 mg.(antidepressant and sleep aid), and Zyprexa 1 mg. I have been on them for about a year and a half now. Happy to say that I have been stable....but it was a long long recovery! Luckily I was with a great psychiatrist in the hospital and had people to support me. I have had anxiety my whole life and constantly worrying about stuff and memory problems...etc. But never as severe as after my second child (I have never in the past had to take meds before).

Avatar n tn Like i said i have been on 5 years and get blood work twice a year and my liver kidney and other organs are perfect! My blood pressure and cholesterol are perfect too, im very healthy and i work out too. Opiates if taken RESPONSIBLY which 90% of people cant do and dont have the self control to do, but if you have strong will power and take them responsibly instead of just getting ****** up out of your mind all day, then they are MUCH better for you than xanax and other benzos.
Avatar m tn What you have is probably brain fog and it can be due to several causes like liver dysfunction (get liver enzymes done—liver function test), kidney dysfunction (get kidney function test done), and anemia. Poor sleep pattern and sleep problems like sleep apnea too can cause brain fog. You may sleep your customary 8-10 hours, feel fresh and yet have a sleep problem. Sleep studies by sleep specialists can help diagnose this. Low Vit D or Vit B12 too could be the cause.
Avatar n tn Hey , i'm not sure if it's too much or not but if it's helping you that's a good thing right ! , any way's i take 600mg seroquel xr , 450mg lithium and if i need to as PRN 100mg seroquel . .if you have concerns best talk with your doctor as the other guys suggested .
Avatar n tn I was 5 meds when I was first dx but I am only on 2 now for bi polar and one synthroid cause I had thyroid cancer. when I was on the 5 I could barely function. go see another doc and keep me posted on what happens.
222267 tn?1253305810 Go for 6 small meals a day with a carb and a protien. No sodas and sugar. I have lost 46 pounds and I have been on zyprexa for about 7 years. I am loosing 30 more.
Avatar n tn I was put on zyprexa 5mg and effexor 225 mg, which is a similar regime. I was able to give up the zyprexa after the year but remain on an anti depressant. It is just that my depression got so bad i went down very low + she classified this as psychotic as i never had any high or elevated mood. Hope this helps.
Avatar n tn Yes, that does help me understand somewhat. Thank you. My gastroenterologist recently entertained the idea that my severe neurological "spells" (epidsodes of increasing talkativeness, which progresses to uncharacteristic rage, inability to read/write, not knowing where I am, ending with fatigue and drowsiness) may be caused by hepatic encephalopathy.
Avatar n tn My brother is paranoid and thinks that he has to have these pills to stay alive and function; so no amount of talking to him and trying to reassure him is effective. He refuses to see a counselor, so he can't even learn coping techniques. We are all a nervous wreck over this because the dr.
Avatar f tn When she came home she was okay and then after a day or two she would just sleep and eat all day, could not really fully function. I mean she was really doped up, lethargic and just blah. Dr. lowered the Zyprexa, I don't think she ever reached the therapeutic levels of the Depakote b/c I was not giving it to her like it was prescribed. I did not know what to do, I just wanted my daughter back. Went back to the Dr.
Avatar n tn Some people have experienced serious liver problems while taking valproic acid. Your doctor should check your liver function before you start this medication and at frequent intervals thereafter. You will also be monitored for symptoms that lead to liver toxicity. Before taking this medication, tell your doctor if you have liver disease. Depakote or Depakote ER should not be taken if you have liver disease.
1428287 tn?1283100281 Parasites in the gut like threadworm, tape worm, giardiasis etc can behave this way. Hence a stool test is a must. Problems of gall bladder and liver or that of pancreas too cannot be ignored and should be investigated. Possibility of H pylori infection too should be looked into. I would strongly recommend you to see a gastroenterologist (a specialist who looks after the diseases of our digestive system). Maybe your physician can recommend someone.
Avatar n tn Very interesting stuff in your post...I still can't believe that Dr.'s rx an antipsychotic for anxiety, etc. That's like using a hammer to kill a fly. The pharmaceutical companies are heavily promoting classes of drugs that belong in psychiatry to other specialties to increase market share, sales, etc. It's simply not right...many patients just don't understand how serious this class of drugs are and the potential risk factors.
253566 tn?1219683299 But if you have to ask yourself. And then tell them the exact truth. And if you did have such extreme feelings of depression and still do I would suggest working on getting help for it even if you don't feel you should be hospitalized because that would indicate that things are wrong. You have to understand its not a matter of trust. There are regulations. It happenned to me once before recovery. But I can't say they did the wrong thing.

Avatar m tn pmid=16343787 I saw a neurologist in August. The neurologist performed an EMG, EEG, and an MRI. The EMG measures the electronic signals that are traveling through the nerves after being stimulated by a small electric shock (it's pretty painless). when the muscle is shocked, it should send an electrical signal, then electrical activity should go silent. If the EMG equipment sees ongoing signals afterwards, then that can signify neurological issues.
Avatar n tn I stop taking zyprexa (5mg)24 days ago after taking it for 11 years, I'm experiencing a lot of muscular and mental tension as well as insomnia. I feel phisically restless and very obsessive thoughts goes through my mind. I'm also sweating a lot. My life at this time is quite difficult. I think that I'm also dealing with a lot of anxiety. The good news is that my appetite has decrease 50% (taking zyprexa make me gain 100 pounds).
Avatar n tn My wife called doc with 3 weeks to go and he called in Zyprexa but it only made me real sleepy. I wish I had done something sooner because I think I did long lasting or permanent damage to my relatiomship with my wife and kids. I wish I had a better answer for you but I never found one for myself. Good luck.

Avatar n tn Lots of folks are on Depakote and Tegretol which were originally developed as anti-convulsants for folks with seizure disorders. Depakote is not a good choice for folks with impaired liver function and Tegretol has been known to lower white blood cell counts so that probably rules them out for most folks with Hep C. Zyprexa is a very common one. Neurontin is commonly prescribed but there is a big debate within the mental health community about whether it really works.
439168 tn?1307935340 In a very few people it can cause a decrease in white blood cell count so initially you will need blood tests to monitor your white cell count and liver function tests but these side effects are seen only in a minority of people otherwise it is safe. Only that that you cant drink much with it.It does not cause weight gain or any of the other lousy side effects seen in the other mood stabilizers and anti psychotics.
Avatar n tn I went on 2.5 mg of Zyprexa and 10 mg. of Paxil and consulted with my psychiatrist. I started getting night sweats about 2 weeks ago and told my psy and am now on 5mg of Paxil along with the 2.5mg of Zyprexa and doing very well. I expect to go off of the meds in about 3 months. I know it's difficult but your symptoms will go away. Just make sure you wean yourself off gradually enough. Moderate exercise also helped me. Take care!
