Common Questions and Answers about Zyprexa and eating disorders

zyprexa

Avatar m tn It can be prescribed to treat many different mental illnesses and mood disorders, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression. Have you been diagnosed with a certain disorder, or is this med being recommended for your mental state during w/d? There are some considerations when on Zyprexa, you will have to have occasional blood work done, as Zyprexa can cause high blood sugar, increased cholesterol and lipids.
8798274 tn?1399988458 The first step would be to rule the causes for insomnia like sleep disorders. Next it is treated with both medical and non medical therapy. Medical (sedatives) are given in the temporary initial phase, this is combined with non medical measures like sleep hygiene, relaxation therapy, stimulus control, and sleep restriction which are referred to as cognitive behavioral therapies. As the non medical measures help to restore your sleep rhythm, the sedatives are withdrawn.
Avatar f tn Hello, I took zyprexa (antipsychotic) for 4 years and have taken cymbalta (antidepressant) for 5 years. I gained a lot of weight (50lbs), and started to have insulin resistance problems and high glucose levels. I was put on metformin 500mg once a day for a year. I was told that if I lost the weight my numbers would go back to normal. I lost 40lbs, I am exercising and eating healthy. My doctor told me that I could quit metformin.

Avatar f tn Unfortunately something went horribly wrong and he could not swallow food afterwards! So a feeding tube was used and then removed after three long years. He can eat but very very slowly cause he chokes soooo severly on everything! He can only swallow with his head tilted to the right also. His appetite still has never returned, so wanting to eat is almost gone! Is there anything that can help with this?
Avatar f tn If you have extreme hunger and are overeating during the day as well, and are concerned about your weight perhaps I would consider an eating disorder, but it sounds more medical or nutritional to me.
Avatar n tn I began taking atypical antipsychotics just over a year ago, and stopped just over a month ago. I have been on Risperdal, Abilify, Seroquel, Zyprexa, and Geodon, in that order. Risperdal caused me to have a grand mal seizure. I was only on it for a month or so, and I was taking a fairly low dose (I don't remember precisely how much). Neither Abilify and Seroquel lasted long because of unpleasant side effects (nausea and twitching/akathesia).
Avatar f tn My doctor suspected I was going to be psychotic becuase my boyfriend broke up with me while I was havely overworked. I had a panic reaction and my doctor gave me zyprexa. I used it for 3 months and I stopped cold turkey because I had uncontrolled movement of arms and legs. The worst withdrawal effects that I suffer from are extreme apathy and insomnia. I have seen posts from others that suffer from this as well, but untill now it doesn't get better and I get worried.
Avatar f tn i was diagnosed with bipolar 6 years ago after a head injury and was taking zyprexa. Soon after, I was hospitalized with pancreatitis. The doctors immediatly took me off the zyprexa. Since then I have quit all alcohol and never did take drugs. I am currently taking Lexapro, but i don't feel it is what i need. I am constantly tierd, gaining weight, have constant muscle pain, especially in my feet and legs. I still suffer from mood swings, the ups and downs.

Avatar f tn After stopping serzone for anxiety, my husband had a reaction of severe insomnia after trying Lexapro for 3 days. His doctor suggested bipolar and put him on Zyprexa but is weaning him down gradually. He's on 7.5 mg currently. What side effects can we expect if he doesn't really have bipolar (which is our opinion) from this medication? We know the most common ones, but what if he is not truly bipolar? I can't wait for him to get off of it, but he is sleeping soundly again.
Avatar n tn I would not change her medications without speaking to her psychiatrist. If they thought she had bipolar and took her off Prozac that would make sense because that can worsen mania. Zyprexa is an antipsychotic that is a good mood stabilizer but that is sedating. Abilify is less so but as you said she couldn't tolerate it. Lithium is worth trying. Its the most effective mood stabilizer out there.
Avatar m tn Are they referring to people with active eating disorders who are in a compromised medical state and more prone to seizing, or will anyone who has ever had an eating disorder be denied this med? I am not asking for Wellbutrin because of the weight loss side effects- 100% honest!!- but instead for its apparent success rate. Finally, do I simply ask my doctor to prescribe it for me? Or would they have to recommend it?
574118 tn?1305135284 After two months on a low dose of Zyprexa, I started to experience akathisia. More Zyprexa made it worse. Next, I tried Seroquel and it caused akathisia, too. Further, depakote does the same thing""" Now I wonder for this bloody bipolarity how can one resolve the issue of meds. If you give one med up due to its side effects, then by substituting another one you get another worse side efect.
Avatar f tn hi, im a 23yr old woman who experienced her first episode in october last year, i was at first on 20mg of zyprexa and 1000 mg of epilim when i was in the hospital, and have slowly come down to 1.25 mg of zyprexa and 200mg epilim, been on the 1.25 mg of zyprexa for around a week now and want to reduce further, any advice on how to get down to nothing without going mental! went cold turkey off the meds in nov last year and it didnt go too well.
Avatar f tn It came to my attention recently through my therapist that Zyprexa which is an antipsychotic is given to people suffering from other common anxiety disorders. A few years back when I had chronic insomnia and got very anxious and depressed due to the sleep loss, a psychiatrist prescribed me Remeron and Zyprexa. Zyprexa to get the sleep going until Remeron kicks in.

Avatar m tn I called my doctor and he told me to just stop taking the zyprexa and the edema would go away. I asked him if I should wean down and he said no that there are no withdrawal symptoms. I started to experience nausea, which was a lot like experiencing morning sickness during pregnancy, then came the headaches, chills, severe depression and the pupil dilation. I felt as though my brain was being squeezed.
Avatar f tn s friend Emily sees me at my skinniest and suddenly starts to lose a noticeable amount of weight. Is this subconscious for Emily? I have done a lot of research on eating disorders and this issue is glossed over completely without fail. Does anyone in the healthcare industry have any info on this or opinion.....I am writing a book.
