Avatar m tn t find a workable dosage of phenobartibal, you might want to ask your vet about either Dilantin, Valium, potassium bromide, felbamate, or a different type of anti-seizure medicine that can be used in conjunction with potassium bromide and/or phenobarbital together called Zonisamide. Zonisamide is totally unrelated to any of the other anticonvulsants, but, like Keppra, the full extent of its side effects is not yet known so to some vets, it is somewhat controversial to prescribe it.
Avatar f tn Hi There. I know what you are going through. My dog (12 year old Beagle) started having seizures in Jun 2014. My dog went through about the same thing your dog is going through. Apparently, my dog is very sensitive to PB. Have tried several dosages on her & she does ok with a very, very low dose but the seizures come back in 2-3 wks. Right now she is taking 1/2 tab in a.m., 1/2 tab in p.m and every other evening she takes 1 full tab (this is 16.2 mg).
Avatar m tn The vet did bloodwork and put her on zonisamide 100mg twice a day. She continued having them so vet doubled her dosage to 200 mg twice daily. She continued having them but they were much shorter in duration. So the vet added phenobarbital 1g twice daily in addition to her zonisamide 200mg twice daily. My question is about the side effects. It has been a week since the pheno was added and she is still very clumsy and can't even walk up stairs.
Avatar m tn WE HAVE HAD HER TO SEVERAL VETS, LAST TIME WAS AT UNIVERSITY OF TENN VET HOSPITAL WHERE SHE WAS DIAGNOSED. SHE WAS PUT ON ZONISAMIDE 50MG TWICE A DAY. SHE HAS BEEN ON THIS FOR A WEEK AND A HALF AND WE CAN TELL NO DIFFERENCE IN THE HEAD BOBBIN. SHE ALSO IS NOT EATING ARE WE EXPECTING TOO MUCH TO SOON? WILL HER APPETITE COME BACK. I HAVE BEEN BACK IN TOUCH WITH HER REGULAR VET WHO SENT US TO UT AND SHE WANTS TO GET IN TOUCH WITH UT WITH SOME QUESTIONS.
Avatar f tn I have been seeing a regular neurologist to see if she can treat my migraines and am currently on 150 mg. of Zonisamide every night to try to help that, but I am also working with Dr. Gardner at UPMC, who is a Chiari specialist. He believes it is best to eliminate all other possibilities before actually resorting to surgery to treat the Chiari, which I respect. I go back for a 6 month follow-up MRI and consult with Dr. Gardner next week.
15422595 tn?1440452745 She was initially put on Zonisamide but after 2 weeks, she had a couple more seizures. At that point the docs added Phenobarbital. We've had her blood tested and the PB is at the proper levels in her system. The good news is she's not had any seizures since then... the not so good news is that she's still not adapted well to the meds after 7 weeks.
Avatar n tn I have a 1 year 4 month old German Shepherd named Melo who's been having seizures since he was 1. I just wanted to share my experience because I know its comforting to hear stories of other people that are going through what you're going through, makes you feel less hopeless. Melo had 4 seizures in the span of 2 hours, he's taking 300mg of Zonisamide every 12 hours but before take refill arrived he had ran out and that's when the seizures happened.
979826 tn?1389036358 has anyone heard of Zonisamide? i will go on this drug once i come off topamax I've been on topamax forever!
Avatar f tn Keppra (levetiracetam) is mostly excreted by the kidneys are is one of the safest drugs speaking in terms of therapeutic vs. toxic blood concentrations. Other drugs include zonisamide, potassium bromide, etc. A large percentage of dogs respond to one anti-seizure medication. For some, one is not enough and they need 2, 3, or 4 others! (I have seen it). It is not excessive to have more than one drug. Each drug works on a different receptor in the brain.
Avatar f tn I graph my headaches daily and average a 5 on a 0 - 10 scale, no changes noted with Zonisamide treatment. No days are 0. I avoid taking any OTC medications and use the Naproxin and Imatrex very sparingly. An MRI a year ago showed bulging but it was discounted as unimportant by my neurologist. A week ago my PT however suggested an exercise for correcting a bulging cervical disc that she feels I may have. She knew nothing of the MRI results.
1831920 tn?1320857757 Sounds like the dog is getting very mixed signals. I suggest you look up some articles on crate training and have your husband read them. We are not talking in humane crating here. He probably has visions if puppy mill dogs. Many of us here are experienced and "humane" dog people. Dogs are basically den animals. All my dogs have usually gone in their crates on their own to nap, my little one is in her crate now. I leave the door open.
1577473 tn?1296177286 in my area to be seen by a neurologist. I saw the doctor for the first appt and she put me on Zonisamide as a migraine preventative and Maxalt-MLT 10 mg as a rescue medication as well as ordering some labs, an MRI and an MRA. All tests came back normal. The Maxalt worked well when I got the migraines but insurance wasn't too happy with it so we had to switch. She then put me on Relpax which didn't work at all.
1402028 tn?1280858335 s have been performed. The seizure medication I was on was called Zonisamide...and it made all of my symptoms worse. I was taken off of that and put on Amitripylene, which I am currently on. It doesn't seem to be doing a whole lot but the doctor wants me to try it for 3 months and I am on month 2. My sleep pattern is messed up badly now as well; I don't know if it is from the medicines, or just lack of exercise since I'm stuck indoors so much now. Thank you for the help.
1627010 tn?1299446388 It makes the eye produce more tears.I use it for my peke and he has been on it for years .It is really a good med.and since your baby is use to getting meds in her eyes i am sure she will be fine with it.You can also have it compounded into drops if drops are better then the ointment.I use the compounded drops it seems to last longer than the other.I put 2 drops in twice a day.I hope your baby is feels better soon.
Avatar f tn My vet actually recommended that we use baby shampoo rather than buying expensive dog shampoo. But our beagle doesn't have any skin problems. I'd ask the vet if adding vitamin E oil to the shampoo would help?
Avatar f tn No sir. Please see a veterinarian. There are a variety of reasons dogs have constipation and that must be diagnosed by a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and proper treatment given. Human meds are almost never proper to give to pets. Doses are different, reactions are different and in some cases even an innocent med can cause death of a pet. Please consult a D.V.M.
Avatar f tn I am not a vet nor vet tech if you do anything you read online to your dogs check with a professional first. ARE YOUR DOGS EARS REALLY LONG? use a head band a few hours a day ir at night get those ears up and let air into the ear.

Avatar f tn of effexor and i couldnt sleep at nite so my doctor started me on 25 mg. of zonisamide and took me off effexor.I am having horrible side effects but dont know which med. is causing it.I have been crying in the mornings, having a constant stomach ache and my head feels very confused almost to the point of disillusion. 851294 tn?1239015716 I'm really glad to hear that everything is fine and you've got your boy back on an even keel. The maple syrup was a good idea. Quick thinking! :) Honey is a good thing to keep around for just that sort of emergency, and because it's so thick and gooey, it's a lot harder for them to aspirate it. Keeping it in the fridge firms it up even more and makes it easier to scoop some up on a tongue depressor and smear it onto his tongue.
Avatar n tn The vets have tried everything from scrapping skin, steroid shots oral and injected antibiotcs. We use special shampoo and sprays for the rash, he has had this in the past and luckily had a great recovery but now its back and not getting better. Please help its becoming so expensive and I feel he is so uncomfortable. I hate to see him this way. Please help. Thanks.
3248373 tn?1346981993 try zonisamide slowly go up to 300 mg have your doctor try you on that it worked for mine, Topomax just made me anger and paranode
Avatar f tn T LET THE VET GIVE YOU METRONYZANDOL, if he does, makes sure its in low doses. My dog was poisoned by this and caused nuerolgical issues. He lost use of his legs until taken off of it. Then at the end, his esophagus wasnt working because of the neurological issues. Hope your dog feels better soon.
7169697 tn?1389437534 I have a cat that's the same way. Anytime a kid comes near her, she hisses. I'm worried for when the baby comes too. What I'm hoping is that since they'll be around baby all day, everyday, they'll get use to them? Kids rarely come over and I think it just freaks my cat out. I'm hoping she gets use to it.
Avatar f tn Anyone have something you use to do that now being pregnant it seems like waaaay more effort. Its Sunday and I'm cleaning my house, I use to just bang everything out in an hour and be done, I feel like it takes forever now bc I'm finding just after one task (sweeping) I winded and dizzy and feel the need to rest. I'm trying to listen to my body but its so frustrating when all I want to do is get it done!!! Anyone else?? PS I'm only 20 weeks!!!!!
