I don't want to go overboard and make you think your daughter has PANDAS. I do want to reinforce what JSGeare and nursegirl6572 wrote: it's not common, but it should be checked because of the relationship between the strep infection and the return of the OCD symptoms.

Thank you for responding so promptly. Could you explain rationale for saying "likely not an example of PANDAS?" I am just trying to understand the disorder (s) and have trouble understanding PANDAS versus true OCD. My gut feeling is as you have said, more classic OCD, but I would like to make sure I understand the distinguishing factors. Thank you!

The hallmark trait for PANDAS is sudden acute and debilitating onset of intense anxiety and mood lability accompanied by Obsessive Compulsive-like issues and/or Tics in association with a streptococcal-A (GABHS) infection that has occurred immediately prior to the symptoms. In some instances, the onset will be 4 to 6 months after a strep infection because the antibiotics did not fully eradicate the bacteria.

My speculation is that once the body is primed for a PANDAS type response, it can be triggered by something other than the Strep/Scarlet Fever. The good news is that my son is almost 13 years old and his PANDAS symptoms are essentially gone. He does have the occasional flare up, but these are minor. Usually my husband does not even notice a flare up.

Should I consider IVIG and does it work in these persistent cases? Can you help me find a Dr. to treat PANDAS in NE OH? It is like fishing to find a Dr for this. Another issue is the school. How do you get them to understand the affects of the stress and illness on him?

Please, please, please look into PANDAS disorder. It stands for Pediatric Autoimmune Neuro-Psychiatric Disorders Associated with Strep Infections. I behaved very similarly to the description of your parents' niece. Aggressive rage attacks and scary, dangerous behaviors that I would have NO memory of doing afterward. My parents put me in an outpatient program at a hospital, but I would only suggest this as a complete last resort.

t see a lot on allergies creating mood disorders or on pandas. I believe most people that come to this site never post and are looking for insight and maybe success stories or at the very least some kind of idea as to where they should start. If any info I have thrown out here helps at least one child and their family then mission accomplished I guess. Searching the web is unfortunately the way I had to find help for my child and not from initial contact with medical professionals.

Many doctors do not believe PANDAS is real so if you do bring it up with her pediatrician, be ready for summary dismissal of the idea. m not a doctor but I have OCD and one of the things I was tested for recently was for thyroid issues. It turned out that nothing was wrong with my thryoid but I believe that the thyroid may cause such symptoms as depression and anxiety so yes it could be affecting his OCD and even causing it. I got tested and was given 1 gram of zithromax and 7 days of levaquin. That was on monday night i was treated and then that saturday morning I had unprotected sex with an uninfected partner. Is it possible I could have infected the partner? They told me the zithromax would wipe it out right away but it seems from reading these forums that that could not be the case.
