Crestor is a statin (rosuvastatin calcium) only, Vytorin is a statin (Simvastatin) with Zetia (ezetimibe). Statins work by controlling the production of cholesterol in your liver while Zetia works by preventing cholesterol to be absorbed in your digestive system.
Of the two, Crestor is the stronger of the two. In addition, recent trials have shown that adding Zetia does not improve the performance of Vytorin over Simvastatin alone.
None that I know of, however, since it is a Statin, I would add a CoQ10 supplement as the Statins completely deplete it from your system.
I would have to do more research and question my Dr’s decision before jumping into Statins.
Statins are a “wonder drug” for lowering cholesterol but with your liver damage at stage 3, I would proceed with caution.
Statins work in the liver and every commercial I have seen advises not to take if you have liver problems. Zetia works in the intestines.

If my memory serves me correctly, MikeS is taking statins and he had a TP.
I think they have concluded that neither do Zetia, except when used with a statin, so it is the statin doing the work. I also think Welchol has been shown to not reduce cardiac events too. not sure. I am on Repatha. Third bi weekly shot. have about 1/3 of the severity of symptoms that I had on statins. headache, muscle aches. may put up with it and may not. just keepin on keepin on for now. Will see if this gets better, worse or stays the same.
The current clinical practice is to discontinue statin when the liver enzymes have increased to more than three times the upper limit of normal. Although zetia on its own does not generally cause liver enzyme abnormalities, it might potentiate the enzyme abnormalities, when coadministered with a statin.
Generally, when that happens, physicians would generally withdraw the statin or both medications, depending on the extent of enzyme elevation.
Ever since I started taking Zetia and Fenofibrate together as recommended by my DR, I have put on pounds, am more bloated around the belly,a nd have persistent chest pains. I noticed this has occurred ever since I have been on cholesterol lowering meds, but is more noticeable in the past year with the new combination of drugs. I mentioned this to my DR and he said I need the drugs because of my High Cholesterol. What do you think?

How are you? Glomerular filtration rate or its approximation of the creatinine clearance are measured whenever renal disease is suspected or careful dosing of nephrotoxic drugs is required. The normal ranges of GFR, adjusted for body surface area for males is 70 ± 14 mL/min/m2 (56-84) . Risk factors for kidney disease include diabetes, high blood pressure, family history and older age.

Then my GP put me on Zetia. Said it would be different. After two months on it, it was worst than the statins. Woke up one morning, couldn’t close my hand. My fingers were so swollen and my both thumb joints would not bend. When I tried to bend them they clicked and was very painful. Never had any problems with my knees, one morning got up both knees were so very painful, when going up and down stairs. Hips started hurting.
I finally went to a specialist in Baltimore who read my history which showed all the meds I was taking and he noticed that I was taking Zetia and told me that he believed Zetia caused chronic coughing in some people; so he looked it up on his computer and sure enough, that was one of the warnings. I stopped the Zetia and the coughing disappeared completely within a couple of weeks. The point here is that medicines, while helping one problem, frequently can cause another.
