Common Questions and Answers about Yeast infection on skin in dogs

yeast-infection

Avatar n tn You need to make an appointment with your vet to see what the cause of the redness is. If it's in both ears, it could be caused by allergies or he could have a yeast infection in his ears. A yeast infection, while not as easy to clear up as a run-of-the-mill ear infection, CAN be cured with medication.
Avatar n tn I recommend starting by taking your dog to your veterinarian for assessment of the itch and medication recommendations. The most common reasons for itchy skin in dogs include skin infections, microscopic skin parasites such as scabies mites, food allergy, or pollen/dust allergies. Since scabies mites are difficult to find, I trial treat dogs for scabies with Revolution every 2 weeks for 3 treatments.
Avatar n tn First, do be a little cautious how many times you are washing Freddy, as dogs coats need the natural oils to maintain their glossy coat appearance and the health of their coat. Also, washing too frequently can cause dry skin problems. The best dog shampoos are usually those specifically designed for puppies, which tend to be free of perfumes (which can cause irritation and can dry the skin) and are usually slightly milder in nature.
Avatar n tn yeast can be normal in dogs mouths so it could be contaminating the underwear. We can also have yeast in our mouths in low numbers too (normally). Yeast infections are not sexually transmitted but can be associated with oral sex. So you could actually transmit them to her that way and then infect yourself. So this is a complicated question. Also, you could be getting it from just sweating during sex. The moisture may be causing you to get yeast or another fungus like joch itch.
Avatar f tn Allergies can just be allergies and not evolve into cancer. My dog actually has had recurring yeast infections and then we finally did allergy skin testing. he's been on allergy shots for years now and hasn't had any yeast in his ears in many years. It was costly and took a long time to kick in but SO worth it. but before jumping into testing try a strict elimn. diet it could be a cheaper fix.
612551 tn?1450022175 My Westie has more than his share of skin problems, including Yeast infection which has been treated both with prescription and over-the-counter dog medicated shampoo. All this helps, but he continues to have some itch problem with his ears, which he can not lick, and the ear 'look" okay. He also continues to have some problem on his toes which I think is aggravated by his licking. In fact he can get the toes to show a "sun burn" red appearance.
Avatar n tn I use a vet shampoo Malsorb I think it is called to help control yeast infection and for sensitive skin .. no perfumes, etc. My ShihTzu gets yeast odor very easily when not on this shampoo. Also has had the red you talk about and it was a moist yeast infection in my dog's case in the area you describe and cream for a week cleared it up ok. Then she ended up with that in her ears recently and liquid of the same med worked fine.
Avatar m tn I completely agree with everything skydnsr has said. Ear infections in dogs is very common, and almost always due to either mites or yeast infection and/or allergies of many kinds. The inner ears of a dog are fragile and susceptible to infection due to the close surface blood vessels. But the real question is, what is it that your dog has become allergic to (unless the reaction/inflammation has come from another dog or something else like due to diet).
Avatar f tn Dark scaly spots on the skin can be due to a localized skin infection, most commonly bacterial or yeast, less commonly ringworm/fungal infection or demodex mange mites. The increased licking (which is the way dogs scratch themselves when they are itchy), suggests infection is causing itch. The skin increases pigment as a protective response due to the inflammation.
Avatar f tn help with my beagle, she,s had been on antibiotics from surgery on leg , she has now developed irritation in skin folds around the vulva ....red and swollen pretty sure its yeast infection/fungal just wondering can I use human products like canestan/clotrimozole cream on that area.. would it hurt her if she licked the cream. I am taking her to the vet on Monday but in the meantime I would like to try ease the discomfort she is constantly licking the area.
Avatar f tn Hot spots are usually due to food or environmental allergies. Food or environmental allergies can cause itching of the skin and can occur anywhere on the body. However, the lesion could also have begun as a foreign body such as an awn, sticker, splinter, or wound, for example. These wounds can heal over but the inciting factor may still be there. Causing an abscess or infection. The lesion could also be caused by ectoparasites, such as scabies mites, or fleas.
Avatar f tn I had the same trouble with one of my dogs. Every summer she got yeast infections in her feet. She'd cool off in the pool, and since she had big hairy toe pads, they harbored moisture and made a perfect environment for fungus. The stench was horrible! My vet recommended Dermachlor Flush Plus, and it was a godsend. It comes in a bottle and I'd squirt it on her toe pads and in between her toes twice a day for 3 days. Fungus gone.
689528 tn?1364135841 Some ideas...not sure if you've tried these already. 1) Rule out/experiment to determine if this is possible Food Allergies: You mentioned switching dog food to one that is wheat and corn free. One of my female pointer dogs racked up numerous vet bills where they did skin scrapings, I tried benadryl, vet put her on repeated courses of antibiotics and prednisone and none of these resolved her ongoing skin issues.
557644 tn?1222822602 I have a West Highland Terrier and he has skin allergies. He was having problems with yeast infections in his ears too. The vet said our dog probably has food allergies, so he prescribed a special dog food and prescribed medication, which helped the itching tremendously while he was on it.
5769293 tn?1373926011 The yeast infection could be due to an allergy. My dogs allergic to yeast and gets the infection. Does it have a foul odor? I would seek vet advice..
Avatar m tn Hi, I have had a lot of weird problems with my penis lately. I've never had any problems during sex before, but about a week after I met my girlfriend (around the middle of November), I noticed a few red dots on the top of my penis, after sex. They didn't hurt at all but I went to the doctor to check it out. He tested me for STDs and yeast and everything was negative.
209987 tn?1451935465 Our newly acquired "Hero" is going through yet another round of yeast infection in her ears. Before my dad passed away, I remember him saying something about how Sheba was constantly going through this. He had tried many things over the years...took her to the vet who would rinse her ears and then apply some sort of cream inside them. Dad said that he would dish out about $80 or more each visit, and the relief for her would not last long.
Avatar n tn In my unprofessional opinion, I don't think the spots are anything to worry about. Like people, dogs can develop differently pigmented areas on their skin, and it's just the way they were meant to be and entirely normal. Since you're concerned, bring it up with your vet on her next checkup. As for the paw licking, she may be doing that out of simple boredom.
Avatar n tn If your dog has not licked himself than the alternative is a common skin yeast called malassezia which is a dark brown color. It is a normal skin inhabitant in low numbers, but can become an infection if in high numbers. Malassezia is usually secondary to Atopy (allergic skin disease).
Avatar n tn bebo makes a great point: food allergies are often the root cause of chronic yeast overgrowth problems. You could also try probiotic digestive enzymes either from the pet store or the human herbal aisle at the grocery store. Acidopholus is a great first-line defense against yeast of any kind in the body, and is the same helpful ingredient found in active cultured yogurt like DanActive. Another great topical remedy to try with the feet is Dermachlor Flush Plus.
Avatar n tn an urinary tract infection, vaginal infection, or an infection of the skin of the perivulvar area. The infection could be bacterial, yeast, or a combination. Usually urinary tract infections are accompanied by the symptoms of increased frequency of urination, and/or drinking, dribbling, or inappropriate urination. However, occasionally the only symptom is licking the vulvar area.
4413820 tn?1354210055 She also has friends on all three sides that she loves to run and play with so she does get a good workout. On the comment that you made about the yeast infection. Do you think that Liza could have a yeast condition? Reason I ask because that is the next thing I am trying to chase down. Is the Innova brand of dog food especially formulated for that type of condition or is it just better for Bullies.
Avatar n tn Mange mites suck the blood out of hair follicles, which causes the hair to fall out. The awful smell means there is a secondary skin infection in the follicles that will need antibiotics to treat. Bottom line, it's time to see your vet.
Avatar m tn Ringworm is especially common in kittens and cats, while yeast and bacterial infections are more typical in dogs. The ears are lined with skin, so itchy ears in both dogs and cats are an extension of the same types of infections. Your veterinarian will need to make the correct diagnosis in order to properly treat the infection. However, one thing that vets don’t talk about much is why infection occurs.
Avatar f tn If your dog is not already on a good monthly prescription flea preventative such as Frontline, Advantage or Revolution, then your veterinarian can prescribe an appropriate choice (Revolution is a good choice, since it also kills microscopic scabies mites, which can be hard to find on skin scrapings and can mimic allergies in dogs).
Avatar m tn My dog has a mild yeast infection in her left ear but she may have a tear in her eadrdrum. The vet gave us TrizEDTA but due to her losing her hearing from Tri-Otic, we didn't want to use any more ear medication that can cause hearing loss. I've recently started making her home cooked meals, wipe her down with apple cider vinegar+water, and flushing her ears out every other day plus cleaning the outer part of her ears on days I don't flush.
