Avatar n tn You need to make an appointment with your vet to see what the cause of the redness is. If it's in both ears, it could be caused by allergies or he could have a yeast infection in his ears. A yeast infection, while not as easy to clear up as a run-of-the-mill ear infection, CAN be cured with medication.
209987 tn?1451935465 Yeast in the ears is extremely difficult to get rid of with home remedies and not all that easy to get rid of with prescription meds because the ear canal is a dark, moist place and ideal to promote the growth of yeast. Please don't bother messing around with vinegar and other home remedies. Take her to the vet where he can prescribe Otomax.
Avatar f tn Have you had the yeast cultured to see what kind it is? There is an ear medication called Otomax that is used to cure yeast infections in the ear and it is very effective against the Malassezia pachydermatis yeast organism. Why not talk to your vet about using Otomax if you have not yet tried it?
Avatar f tn My dog is prone to getting yeast infections in her ears and i was wondering if i could use a ph balanced soap to clean her ears and what home remedies i can do to prevent infection?
Avatar m tn My dog has a mild yeast infection in her left ear but she may have a tear in her eadrdrum. The vet gave us TrizEDTA but due to her losing her hearing from Tri-Otic, we didn't want to use any more ear medication that can cause hearing loss. I've recently started making her home cooked meals, wipe her down with apple cider vinegar+water, and flushing her ears out every other day plus cleaning the outer part of her ears on days I don't flush.
Avatar m tn I completely agree with everything skydnsr has said. Ear infections in dogs is very common, and almost always due to either mites or yeast infection and/or allergies of many kinds. The inner ears of a dog are fragile and susceptible to infection due to the close surface blood vessels. But the real question is, what is it that your dog has become allergic to (unless the reaction/inflammation has come from another dog or something else like due to diet).
612551 tn?1450022175 My Westie has more than his share of skin problems, including Yeast infection which has been treated both with prescription and over-the-counter dog medicated shampoo. All this helps, but he continues to have some itch problem with his ears, which he can not lick, and the ear 'look" okay. He also continues to have some problem on his toes which I think is aggravated by his licking. In fact he can get the toes to show a "sun burn" red appearance.
Avatar f tn Allergies can just be allergies and not evolve into cancer. My dog actually has had recurring yeast infections and then we finally did allergy skin testing. he's been on allergy shots for years now and hasn't had any yeast in his ears in many years. It was costly and took a long time to kick in but SO worth it. but before jumping into testing try a strict elimn. diet it could be a cheaper fix.
1429136 tn?1287209602 Hello & Welcome.....It's probably an Ear Infection or Yeast Infection....Both are quite common. If you've ever had an earache yourself, you know they are very painful! If it's a fungus such as yeast, usually really, really, itchy.... Ear Mites are also a possibility and common, too. They will drive the dog nuts till it's taken care of....The squealing means they must hurt bad! A trip to the Vet is needed......
Avatar n tn Margot makes a good point about yeast infections, which commonly occur in or around the ears, but also on other parts of the body. If your dog has been scratching his ears excessively, then there's an indication of a yeast infection. Also check his body all over looking for dry, reddish brown skin or areas that have become crusty in nature. You can ask your vet to perform a thyroid function test, which is easily done from a blood sample.
Avatar f tn White vinegar is excellent for cleaning the ears of dogs who have problems with bacteria and yeast because the vinegar changes the pH of the ear canal and makes it a place that is basically inhospitable to these things. The normal pH of an ear canal coupled with pendulous ears makes an ideal place for bacteria and yeast to grow. I am not familiar with the ear cleaner that you mentioned above.
Avatar n tn Foul odors in pet's ears are either yeast or bacterial infection or a combination of both. Much of the time ear infections are secondary to environmental or food allergies, or swimming. It would be best to have his ears checked by a vet who can perform a cytology, and/or a culture and sensitivity on the ear discharge.
5769293 tn?1373926011 The yeast infection could be due to an allergy. My dogs allergic to yeast and gets the infection. Does it have a foul odor? I would seek vet advice..
403311 tn?1205951286 It is ear medication that treats yeast and bacteria otitis (ear infection). You can make a ear solution at home if your dog has a yeast infection in her ears. Use one tablespoon of vinegar in 1/2 cup of warm water. It should be either room temperature or slightly warmer since cold water in ears can cause inner ear problems.
423279 tn?1203562853 I have an 8 year old Saint Bernard. He has always had bad ears with chronic yeast infectons. However for the past month he has had this horrible odor( not yeast) coming from his ear. It is only 1 ear & it obviously hurts because if I try to clean his ear he flexes up & doesn't want me to touch it. the drainage or wax has turned dark brown instead of the usual yellowish color.
Avatar f tn My experience with ear itch in dogs that do not have too much hair in the ear, is Yeast infections. This requires prescription medications to cure..and again in my experience with a Westie, it is an ongoing battle. Do the ears have a smell? That could indicate yeast.. is there any build up that you can see or wipe out with a cotton ball when using an ear wash solution - these solutions are specifically for the ears, and my contain Ketoconozole (sp?
1598071 tn?1298208315 Ear mites are only one cause of ear infections in dogs. Yeast and bacterial ear infections are more common causes of head shaking in dogs especially if the ears have already been treated with an insecticide as you have already used. His ears should be checked by a vet and a cytology should be performed on the ear discharge to determine the cause of the infection. A cytology is performed by placing the ear discharge on a microscopic slide, staining the slide than looking under the microscope.
436837 tn?1293793226 Covering his ears will not help the situation.....They need air to breathe....If this is yeast infections, then even more so....Ear problems in dogs are normally food related....A low quality food full of grains could be the problem.... A rare infection that was never cleared up the first time, is possible also..... The best med there is for ALL kinds of ear problems is called, "Zymox".....Can be purchased online without a prescription....Safe to use, too!!!! Let us know.......
Avatar f tn It could also be a fungal infection, which is more common in dogs with floppy ears. The ear fold keeps in more moisture than in pointed-eared dogs. It would be a good idea to have your vet take a look so you're not blindly throwing things at the problem that may not work, or may make the situation worse. It's also a good idea to occasionally check for, and remove, any ear wax that is visible. We swab ears with a Q-tip about once a month.
389345 tn?1209322565 Sounds to me like he has either a yeast infection or a serious infestation of ear mites, and either way it is going to require a trip to the vet. If you allow ear infections to go untreated they can cause horrible problems for the dog for its whole life, and sometimes even result in the dog needing to have an ear canal ablation (having the ear canal removed and just sewn over). Don't mess around with this. This is a puppy with its whole life ahead of it.
Avatar f tn We have a beagle-pointer mix who has been shaking her head incessantly and scratching her left ear. A while ago, we took her to the vet, who looked at the ear and told us it was fine. Our dog, though, scratches it until the ear bleeds. The ear itself is very red and a bit scabby, probably from scratching. I can't really detect evidence of ear mites. We have been cleaning her ears about 3 times a week with cleaning solution, though, just in case.
1600179 tn?1297621973 Finally after treating for that and changing her diet to no grain, she smells good for a change. One sign of yeast in the ears is if the dog rubs their head and ears almost like they are trying to scratch and itch with the carpet or floor.
Avatar f tn another possibility is its a yeast infection, use some canestion in their ears, like in their ears, and try to put there ears up for a couple days to let air get at em
1241045 tn?1268250883 Can you put tubes in dogs ears like children? She also gets yeast in between her toes and is always licking them. And the smell is aweful! I was told it could be allergies, but the test for dogs is expensive. We have tried changing her diet and she still gets ear infections.
Avatar f tn He has been going to the vet for the past few weeks because of an ear infection. I am looking for an OTC ear wash that has steroids and hydrocortisone in it. Right now he is taking Benadryl and prednisone. I am thinking that she wants to get him off of the oral steroids and use the wash as a replacement. I cannot remember the name of the wash from the vet but it is pricey and am hoping to be able to get something just as good but somewhat cheaper.
942557 tn?1272694819 Actually i was wondering if i had some of his nasal fold removed if that would help with the facial redness and oder around his face.I clean his eyes and ears daily. Also his ears keep a bacteria infection all the time.I treat them with Trizeta flush and Baytril. If any advice please let me know .
Avatar f tn I have seen people have to use medicine for, in a couple of cases, almost 30 days to completely get rid of a yeast infection in the ears. It could be also be a case of either the wrong medication or even the right medication, just not for a long enough period of time. Your vet won't know unless you give her your feedback.
