Avatar n tn I had a roommate who used one of these in bad weather, and Gym is right, it's much easier to maintain and use than exercise equipment. I like the home exercise equipment, but as i said, it always turns out to need a lot of maintenance even when new.
Avatar m tn I could probably use some cardivascular workout too come time but I've not much spare cash at the moment for running shoes and sportswear. With flat feet I get painful calves with walking and worse with running even with arch supports. My leg muscles are fine, just my upper body that needs the work in terms of strength, lean muscle mass maintenance and build and toning. I am looking to buy some gear for exercising at home - affordable gear that doesn't use a lot of space.
Avatar f tn I would prefer not to join a gym due to time constraints getting there during the work week. What equipment for home use would you recommend for someone with balance issues and leg/hand stiffness as their main issues? 1) Treadmill 2) Stationary Bike Thanks! My main issues are poor balance and leg stiffness.
703362 tn?1427769928 It requires no equipment, not a lot of time, and you don't have to be at a gym to perform it. Looks quite easy, but looks can definitely be deceiving....I would like for you all to give it a try and tell me how you did. Plank Exercise (see photo above): Works: Core How To: Assume a push-up position, then rest your forearms on the ground and hold for 30 seconds. Repeat as tolerated.
483733 tn?1326802046 A big balance ball, a medicine ball, resistance bands, and small hand weights are also in my arsenal. I also found a really big floor mat online. Most of the mats in stores are not very wide, and it's kinda discourging if you don't feel like you fit well on your mat! Also, the wide mat is a great surface to do my video workouts on, and gives my joints an extra layer of padding on top of my shoes and carpet. Hmmm, I feel pretty guilty that I skipped my AM workout now!
594189 tn?1386920207 I totally agree that it'd be really neat if they offered different sizes of the balance board. It's kinda tough to accommodate children and adults of all sizes with one standard piece of equipment. But I second the above: Don't get discouraged! You've come a long way and will make that mark soon. In the meantime, you should be able to play games that don't use the balance board. Have you played any Wii sports? Those came with the console back when I got my Wii. The tennis is really fun.
5543061 tn?1369583382 A beginner level exercise, the wall press requires no additional equipment. Simply stand with your legs hip-width apart and your palms flat on the wall in front of you, at shoulder level. Keeping your right leg straight, slowly lift your heel off the floor behind you as you exhale. Hold for a count of five, then inhale as you slowly lower your heel back to the floor. Alternate between both legs, doing up to 10 repetitions per leg, gradually increasing the number of repetitions with each workout.
700223 tn?1318169294 Follow an off season conditioning program that is sport specific, that is, one that is designed for your sport. Off season training should address these areas as well as provide instruction to improve overall technique. 3. Build gradually. Don’t try to do too much too soon. 2022474 tn?1328705151 If you opt to just purchase the suggested equipment, then you will probably spend about $70, that is a couple of several weeks of the gym membership or about 50 pounds price of freeweights. Stretch Before Your MMA Workout Stretching is an integral part of the pre and publish workout, out of the box starting to warm up. Immediately preceding a good work out, you need to take a minimum of 10 mins to stretch.
Avatar m tn Okay...I have a whole cocktail of disabilities. Sight loss, hearing loss, balance and motor issues, cerebral palsy (I can walk, and within a certain cone sort of see). My doctor says that there's no -barriers- to exercise...Indeed, I need to, pretty badly, to lose weight (like most people). And I have a membership at my local gym.
572651 tn?1531002957 I vary my practice - one day I'll work on hip openers, another day, hamstrings, shoulders, back strengtheners, forward bends (great for calmng after listening to MacNeil-Lehrer), I do my balance poses against a wall. Cycling - I only do this if my balance issues are OK, and the weather isn't too wet, or hot in the summertime. Wii Fit - DH and I got this for each other for Solstice. The balance games are challenging for me! It's actually easier to ride my bike!
3060903 tn?1398568723 While having access to a gym or exercise equipment will provide you with a larger variety of options, you don't require either. You can easily perform this by walking or running on flat ground. You will certainly want to work your way up to this point, but ultimately you want to exercise vigorously enough so you reach your anaerobic threshold as this is where the "magic" happens that will trigger your growth hormone release.
405614 tn?1329147714 You don’t need a health club membership or special equipment. A good pair of walking shoes will do the trick. Walking with family, friends, or neighbors can be a social outlet. You don’t have to go anywhere in particular, although that’s certainly efficient; it is more about the journey. It is a good way to calm and declutter your mind. It will get you out of the house and into the great outdoors, where you can let your thoughts roam freely. (Turn off that cell phone!
572651 tn?1531002957 Currently I am doing Tai Chi, which is great for my balance and Chi (life force energy) but offers little aerobic benefit. I am also doing water aerobics two times a week, along with swimming laps. I know water workout is supposed to be good but I immediately feel the numbness in my feet when I get in the pool . It is a heated pool but I would guess the temperature is never above 80, so it is well below my body temp.
649848 tn?1534637300 I generally start my Wii Fit work out with yoga for the warm up because it's slow and deliberate and gets the muscles stretched and ready to go, then work on the strength training and aerobics, mixing in some balance games, then end the workout with yoga to cool down and relax. My Wii Fit age ranges from 36-42 yrs. For those of you that don't have Wii Fit, that means that my 59 yr old body works like a 36-42 yr old body.
172023 tn?1334675884 Since I am nearsighted, I want a large enough screen that I don't need my glasses, and am waiting to spot a deal. Investing, but not splurging, in my workout equipment makes me feel very good about myself. And I love the message I've read here, that every week, day, or heck, even MEAL is a chance to start over. Keep looking ahead, don't beat yourself up for a bad patch, look at a plateau as a challenge, not a block, and use whatever cliche or quote or mantra that helps to keep you going.

Avatar n tn Studies show that the fluid motions of tai chi can reduce arthritis pain while improving mobility, breathing, balance, and relaxation. As with yoga, the only person you are competing with in tai chi is yourself. Look for group classes offered by local community programs, community colleges, or fitness centers. If those aren’t available, pick up a beginner’s tai chi DVD and follow along in your living room. A pool can provide that.

649848 tn?1534637300 I've still not used my Wii balance board much (I think it was you who noted I need to use the supports so my carpet isn't in the way, though I don't mind so much that it thinks I'm 30# less than I am). I have some joint issues going on, so ANYTHING where I might twist or turn my ankle is not working. Sometimes even as I'm walking it happens, but when I'm on a cardio machine I do ok. Anyway, once that clears up I'm psyched to use my Wii more.
1415174 tn?1453246703 You want to sit when you have pain, but that actually only makes the situation worse. Has to be a balance between sitting and moving. What's your weight lifting regimen like? Free weights or Nautilus equipment? Again, increase your walking. As far as your medications you definitely should follow the advise of your physician. And no, you aren't too young to have osteoporosis. My sister-law-in has it and she is underweight and doesn't do much sport or activity.
1936411 tn?1333835449 The other class is Tai Chi, which I absolute love and so does my neuro. It works so well with focusing balance and energy in different ways and I really benefit from it. Besides, what could be so bad about slowing down and refocusing energy? There is also Tai Chi for MS patients available on the web. Finally, I coordinate a water aerobics/exercise class for PwMS that meets once a week, so I am also in the water. But I would like to do more swimming.
921323 tn?1268679412 Everywhere you look, there's a new approach to weight loss. From acid balance to zodiac signs, authors, experts, and even bloggers are trying to find the next hook to help you lose weight and help them sell books or advertisements on their websites. But we all know somewhere deep inside that much of the "secret" to losing weight safely comes down to two main concepts: Eat less. Do more.
Avatar n tn My symptoms are just extreme pressure behind my ears and eyes after any workout that lasts anywhere from 3 minutes if it is heavy lifting to 8ish minutes of jogging. It also occurs when I do a 100m dash as well which takes about 10 seconds. I do not experience extreme neck pain though. It is more like what happens to your head when you have a sudden altitude change where your ears pop and you can't get the pressure to come back out of them for 5 minutes or so.
Avatar m tn If done properly, you may feel invigorated, comparable to the heightened awareness you feel after a good workout. Exercise 2: The 4-7-8 (or Relaxing Breath) Exercise This exercise is utterly simple, takes almost no time, requires no equipment and can be done anywhere.
Avatar n tn The current doctor has advised that my pericarditis is not life threatning at the moment but in the long run they do not know yet, they are currently getting me to do a 24hr heart monitor where I attached a equipment to monitor to my arm in the future and also do a 24 hr hour urine test to see if there are any other cause for anxiety.
Avatar f tn It even showed the previous lesion at the optic chiasm which explained the bilateral ON. I started Rebif but after 3 months was still having flare-ups (balance issues and incontinence) At this time, my N-O had a serious talk with me about my future. He encouraged me to start low-vision training, and provided me with the needed documents to apply for visual rehabilitation with the state. He said "If you do it now, you'll be able to function independently until your vision comes back.

29837 tn?1414538248 But, I can still do the treadmill, just at a slower speed and stationary bike, slower speed. On the nautilus equipment that I would do at the gym, I'd cut back from 3 sets of 12 reps to like 2 sets of 8 reps and drop some of the amount of weight, too. That's my tenative plan for whenever that next tx happens. If I'm doing great and can handle more, than I will, but if I'm very anemic it may be all I can handle. It's a wait & see...
