Hydrocodone release from the Tussionex® oral suspension is controlled by the Pennkinetic® system. Chlorpheniramine release from Tussionex® is prolonged by use of an ion-exchange polymer system. Chlorpheniramine is well absorbed from the GI tract. The onset of action of chlorpheniramine is about 30—60 minutes, with peak concentrations occurring in about 2-6 hours and peak effect in about 6 hours. The duration of action is between 4—8 hours. Hydrocodone is well absorbed from the GI tract.

It decreases inflammation in the nose and sinuses along with mucus production. When a nasal steroid spray is used regularly it can prevent postnasal drip. However it does not provide immediate relief of symptoms. It may need to be used every day for several weeks to months to notice improvement in the symptoms. To get the most help from any nasal spray first do a nasal wash to remove mucus from the nose and sinuses.

I took Tussionex for the first time at 11:00 pm after I took a Levaquin at 10:00 pm. I have bronchitis. I awoke suddenly from my sleep at 2:00 am and had no breath - and could not speak or call my husband although I was trying to say 'help'. I got my breath back after a minute or so and was pretty shaken up by this. I'm very tired but reluctant to go back to sleep if it happens again. I was pretty shaken up. Is this an allergic reaction or a side effect?

Also, the FDA issued a warning on this drug so be careful its very easy to overdose on it. Especially for children.

sober 20+ years in 12 step program. Take Tussionex for chronic cough, 1 tsp. per day. I don't abuse it by taking more. But, if I don't take it every day I start to feel like I am getting the flu. Is that withdrawal, just the level in my blood is dropping off after 24 hours? Would appreciate anyone's input, especially if you have experience. Thanks and bless you all. Are you trying to get off of all these medications for good? It sounds like [in your second post here] you're trying to find a way to ask for another type of codeine cough syrup.

when i said tussionex is amazing I did not mean to imply it is a good drug to abuse. It is like any other opiate. if it is abused it turns on you. I took it for bronchitis and it was effective for that. Good to hear that you are trying to kick the habit after several attempts.

The pain is still nagging at the back of my head. I know it is there, but it is numbing me out to the point to where I can actually concentrate on somethign other than the pain.

Whats really scaring me is that I have a hard time breathing now so i really have to get off this junk. Does methadone really work for tussionex, it is a narcotic. Anyhow, there is no way i can stay at a house, like i said i have 5 children and i have to be here. I have no one to help and no real support. I hope i dont die.

Well, tussionex is part hydrocodone which is a semi-synthetic opioid and part chlorpheniramine which is a type of antihistamine. So some people can be more sensitive to the hydrocodone (vicadin) part of the cough syrup. It is a fairly addictive drug and some people have genetics (an enzyme called cpy 2d6) that increases the duration the hydrocodone is elevated in their blood. This leads to exaggerated effects or feeling of euphora and other symptoms.

Thank you for your response. The rx was Tussionex, a hydrocodone based cough syrup. I got the rx filled 4 times between 4 doctors. I did this over a course of 1 month (started in January and got caught yesterday) I had a total of 6 rx (2 I tried to get filled in a matter of one week) the reason I tried to do 2 in one week is bc my dr wrote me a script on Tuesday (this dr had already written me a script two weeks prior). I went to the pharmacy to try to get it filled.

ve been given every cough suppressant from tussionex to robotussin with codine, to no avail. The cough only stops for a few hours once i'm so exhausted that i fall asleep for a few hours. I've had a CT (for elevated DDimer) and a chest xray within the past week, both clean. I'm now to the point where my normal breaths wheeze on the way in and out, and even if i try to breath through my nose, i still make wheezing. I'm clear so far as pertussis.

however, I get bouts of deep, dry, coughing throughout the day. I am not prone to allergies and am in general good health. What is it? What can I do to stop it?
