what is the difference between venlafaxine and effexor

I am now wondering what the next step is for me. What is the difference between Effexor XL and Venlafaxine. How do I reduce from 37.5mg Venlafaxine? My doctor does not know the answer to this. She said it will have to be trial and error. Any comments that will help please?

Yes and No. Venlafaxine is the active chemical in Effexor XR, But notice the "XR" Short for Extended Release. Generic Venlafaxine has no time release properties, but there is now a Generic Extended Release formula of Venlafaxine now on the market. I used to take Effexor XR in the past. I know many people still on it and they report that they had a much better response to the name brand Effexor XR than with the Geneic Effexor XR.

This 2nd doctor looked it up, and said there was little difference in the cost, and would I like to go back on Effexor XL? I said yes. That was a year ago, and I am still on 150mg Effexor XL. I feel really well. All my anxieties and panics have gone, along with the depression. I know not everybody gets the same benefit as me from Effexor. I also do not know if there is much difference in the original, and the generic form. I may have felt just as well on the generic.

What is the difference between Effexor and Effexor XR? Are the dosages usually the same for both meds?

i messed up it is venlafaxine/ the cimitadine is tagamet. neither one of these worj as well as the original.

The problem is, I now take the extended release Effexor and the supposed generic for this med is $70 more than the brand name Effexor ER. How could a generic subsitute be more expensive than the brand name, just doesn't make any sense to me. If I chose to take the non-extended release generic Venlafaxine, it would be $80 cheaper than the Effexor ER. I couldn't seem to get any answers about this from Express Scripts. I have never heard of a generic med costing more than the brand name.

I found, also, that on the generic form of Effexor, I did not do so well. I do believe there is a difference. Cost may make a difference to you though. I have Venlafaxine (Effexor) a good anti-depressant. Go talk to your doctor and tell him how you feel. Let us know how you get on.

I have been on many meds for over 6 years! I have tried over 9 meds..nothing made me gain weight like Effexor...(14lbs) but surprisingly Zoloft which is known to make you gain weight did NOT make me gain weight. my mother (77yrs.of age) has been taking 10mg lexapro for general depression and body aches. Today, the physician said he wanted to give her something that would make her feel more "perky" and changed her script to 150mg Effexor. The instructions are to take 1 pill/day and to stop the lexapro. From my reading it seems that these meds should be weaned.

Iv been on 150mg of venlafaxine for the past couple of months but I wasn't able to pick my tablets up on Friday so it's now Sunday and the dizziness and sickness is getting too much I'm in tears and feel like I'm almost going to pass out is there anything I can do to help..

Check with you doctor, but my doctor and my psychologist who is a specialist in maternal depression said that effexor is safe until the third trimester and then we would have to reevaluate the situation.

Maybe this is not the right time to get him off the meds if they are working for him. After he is finished College and can afford to loose a few weeks may be a better approach.

If you do try Effexor XR....DO NOT GET THE GENERIC VENLAFAXINE! Big difference in terms of the release mechinism. Venlafaxine hits too hard too fast because it has no slow release property like Effexor XR has.

Hi, Venlafaxine hydrochloride is Viepax. Viepax is the generic form of Effexor. I take 150mg Effexor at breakfast, and it releases during the day. When I was given Viepax, I did not find it as effextive as Effexor, and asked to be put back on Effexor. Feel much better now. You are taking a lot of Venlafaxine over a day, unlike some, who take a daily dose. Perhaps there was a reason for this in your case. There are XP versions, and XL versions. The difference is in the release time.

I tried Effexor for only three days when it was given to me to treat migraines and I couldn't tolerate the side effects. Don't remember now what all they were- just that it was intolerable for me. It wasn't given to me for POTS- it was before I was diagnosed with POTS I tried it.

Hello, I reckon withdrawal from Venlafaxine is one of the most talked about subjects on this forum. I stopped cold turkey and had terrible withdrawals. I was well for a year, lost all the weight I had put on, but got a terrible bout of depression again. I am on Effexor 150mg a day, having been on the generic Viepax, but not finding it so effective. Amatrypttyline is one of the old anti-depressants. I expect, like me, you were on it once, as we have both had depression for many years.
