Common Questions and Answers about What is simvastatin generic for

zocor

Avatar m tn I am wondering if anyone has taken simvastatin, the generic brand for Zocor. I just started taking this on Friday and twice since then I seem to have had some strange side effects. It has caused an upset stomach and then made me feel very jittery. It was almost as if I had the chills and then both nights had a horrible time sleeping. The only similar item I ate or drank was Diet Cranberry Soda. I am not sure if this would have had an impact. Any insight would be great.
Avatar f tn I hear this quite often. Next tie you speak to your doctor ask about Zocor. There is a generic called simvastatin and it is very cheap yet very effective. Also, the additional med that your doctor was talking about is most likely a fenofibrate like Tricor which is commonly added to a statin med. I am on both and they have worked very well for me with no side effects.
519736 tn?1253986826 Raising HDL (good cholesterol) is best accomplished in my experience by daily exercising for about 30 minutes, a brisk walk qualifies. Also, good quality fish oil (salmon, mackerel, tuna) is considered a good additive for the purpose of raising HDL.
Avatar n tn s had been around 160. What is the difference betwen the two? My medication is considerably higher than mine? Can you explain why? My blood sugar was running abot 137 so my Doctor also put me on Actoplus as well. My Lipitor is about $100 and my wife's Simvastatin is about $6 (same quantity of tables-30). Why should my wife be taking medication with her levels being slightly higher than the desired mid-point?
Avatar m tn If you feel it is the Simvastatin, you can always ask your doctor about going off of it for a short while to see if it improves. This is a rare side effect of Simvastatin so I would look elsewhere for the problem. You should speak to your doctor.
Avatar n tn There are all kinds of statins out there, as ed said, you have to find out which one you tolerate. I have been on them for many years as I was unable to lower my LDL with diet and exercise alone. They have worked well and I have had no side effects, but everyone is different. Most of these can be replaced by the generic Simvastatin. It's cheap and is the basis of many of the meds out there.
Avatar f tn Simvastatin is a simple statin and is very safe. Your doctor would not put you on it for low HDL (good cholesterol) as it does not increase HDL, it lowers LDL or bad cholesterol. Do you know what your breakdown was? In any case, statins are very safe and proving to me more safe all the time. The risk of any side effect is anywhere between 2% and 5% which classifies this as very safe. Common side effects are muscle pain and sore joints.
Avatar m tn It has been shown that generic drugs is not any different than the non-generic. Its the same chemicals but the original drug maker has lost their patent rights. Patent rights are a method to help the orginal maker recover research and develpment costs. Thanks for your question. Take care.

Avatar n tn just to be sure that nobody gets taken in by the false notion that no fibrate can be combined with statins, here is the ongoing very large ACCORD trial which uses statins and fibrates together: http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/prof/heart/other/accord/q_a.htm "ACCORD will continue to study the effects of intensive compared with standard treatment of blood pressure and the effects of fibrate plus statin compared with placebo plus statin.
1299944 tn?1304793305 s which is not a good thing and like Jerry said the main risk is clots. A fib is easily kept under control by a good doc for most people but its not something you want to take a chance with. Things to avoid if you are sure you have a fib and it was diagnosed by a doc is no caffeine, no colored sodas, no energy drinks, no red wine, cut back on the sugar, drink lots and lots of water because dehydration can set them off, get alot of sleep at nite. These are just the basics. Does a fib kill?

Avatar f tn Can someone explain what, if any, evidence there for a switch from simvastatin to pravastatin? My husband's doctor said there is new evidence that simvastatin may be detrimental. Unfortunately, my husband did not quiz him further. He already has one stent in a narrow back artery but he has brought his cholesterol down considerably with the statins.
Avatar m tn You are on one of the more powerful statins so you can ask your doctor about Vytorin which is simple Simvastatin and Zetia which works both in the liver and in the digestive tract. Simvastatin is usually better tolerated than Lipitor. It would help to know what your LDL and HDL levels are as well, we could possibly give you a better answer.
