What is concerta used for

Common Questions and Answers about What is concerta used for

ritalin

Avatar f tn t last long enough - dose is low. If it lasts too long - dose is high. Concerta should last for about 8 hours. Was he having his speech problems all day long or only more so in the afternoon? What made you decide to lower his dose? I had assumed that these problem happened before you lowered the dose?
Avatar n tn Your son is taking quite a high dose of Concerta. There is no reason to expect that he will not continue to have suppressed appetite. It's not so much an issue of how long he has been on medication, but rather an issue of finding the best medication for him (i.e., the medication that proves to be clinically effective without untoward side effects). Stimulant medications (e.g., Concerta, Ritalin, Adderall, Metadate, etc.) all have the potential to suppress appetite.
Avatar f tn One way to tell, besides the side effects you are feeling is that Concerta should last for about 8 hours. If it is lasting much longer - then pretty good sign that you are taking too much. You definitely need to talk to your doctor and let him/her know what is going on! And since you are taking it on an as needed basis, you might want to look into the standard Ritalin which only lasts 4 hours max and comes in many more dose sizes.
Avatar m tn Just wanted to further add that if there is statistical evidence that a drug will have a damaging effect on the liver, guidelines are set into place with information regarding such in a package insert and the medical association. Statins which are used for treating cholesterol, for example, have set in stone guidelines that are followed when it is prescribed per the FDA. It is known that it may have an effect on the liver which is reversible if caught.
Avatar f tn I also have a seven year old son who was also diagnosed with adhd about a week ago and because of his size he is also on 36mg of concerta and it is making him calmer at home, but when I talked to his teacher today she said that she is not seeing any improvement at all. How long does it take this medication to stat working completely?
Avatar m tn ve been prescribed a generic version of adderall 10mg once a day. From what I read this is amphetamine. My prescription ran out and I used a concerta my concern is if I have a urine test or hair follicle test will the methylphenidate in the concerta show up? Concerta is not my prescribed medicine.
Avatar f tn Why is my 'shrink' trying to treat my Adult ADD with Bubropion HCL SR (100mg tab 2X a day)? Is this the right med for me? Good grief...it didn't even cut out my smoking. Both of my adult children are on Adderall and are doing fine. My doc keeps telling me that Concerta & Adderall are 'too addictive' ... what the heck ... I am not looking to get high or anything ... I just want to be able to have a med to make my ADD manageable.
Avatar n tn it depends, what are they taking them for and how long? The concerta is for ADD my daughter takes it and it's not good to mix it with anything. IIt' s like a speed.
Avatar f tn I am not sure we can give you a good answer. I am on Adderall XR. I like it but there are some strange side effects. I know when I was on Ritalin, any form, I was mean, really mean. It was the same with Concerta. Stratara did nothing for me but there are many people that think it its the greatest thing. I have never tried this Vyvance. I have found the one drug that seems to work best so far.
Avatar n tn My son has ADHD, complex tic disorder, and ODD as well as gluten and casein intolerance, hypothyroidism, and we had a peds neurologist doing all his med adjusting. He is 10 and on Concerta 54 mg (for last almost 3 years) and Zoloft 100 mg and Intuniv 2 mg and recently Risperdal 0.25 mg every am and 0.5 mg q pm. The neurologist wanted to add another med Abilify on board as he was still having some outburst behavior. I find this troubling that he wants my child on 5 psychoactive meds.
1575110 tn?1334664635 Hello, I also have adult ADD and I have tried both Concerta and Vyvanse. My doctor wanted me to try Concerta for a few weeks and I didn't like it at all. It didn't agree with me. It made it feel depressed and NOT motivated to do everyday things. I was on a 36 mg dose and when I went back to my doctor I told him I hated it. He mentioned that there is a new medication called Vyvanse and asked if I would like to try it. With nothing to lose, I said yes. I do like Vyvanse.
Avatar f tn I notice u r on Concerta as well? Is that for ADHD or for fatigue from fibro? It is a stimulant and addictive..mostly causes a dopamine dump but also contributes to seratonin levels as well. I was diagnosed with fibro as well...do not accept the diagnosis as i feel it is a bit vague. they put me on vyvanse bu it caused me more muscle tightness due to it is also a stimlant. Like Concerta..it is not considered quite as abused as Ritilin, addrerall etc.
575214 tn?1218040360 That's a fair amount of medication for a child. He may be reacting to the Concerta. That I'm not sure. Depakoate is a good mood stabilizer. But he's on two antipsychotic as well (Seroquel, Abilify). I have schizoaffective disorder and generally did not need more than one antipsychotic. Did they diagnose any form of psychosis in him? Benzotropine is a side effect pill.
Avatar f tn mutlivitamins and still prozac which is cut down from 10mg to 5mg to wean him off, he was on concerta 36mg for adhd, clonidine .1mg to help with sleep and prozac10mg to combat severe side effects, then after starting prozac. he was chewing on the inside of his lower lip so bad, 2 weeks later and he now has two scars..
1031310 tn?1259857386 Honestly, I think concerta is a way safer drug for CHILDREN in general who do not have reactions to concerta (and reactions to concerta are very rare). I would not make the same statement about adults... probably both are safe for adults (and reactions are rare). But for CHILDREN, concerta is probably the safer of the two UNLESS these sudden auditory hallucinations really are a result of the concerta and not a result of something weird that happened at a new "church"...
1756970 tn?1314376733 That is why it is so important to have good communication with your doctor so these can be fine tuned. And that is why the best advice from me is to let your doctor know what is going on. Any good doc that starts somebody on new meds is waiting to hear how it works - let them know. Hope tomorrow is better than today!
5757880 tn?1395578022 Basically Vyvanse is a smoother, longer acting form of Adderall. Concerta is a longer acting form of Methylphenidate. Usually, but not always, the Adderall type of medications are considered to be stronger. Intuniv is a longer lasting and newer form of Guanfacine. Not a stim med like the above mentioned, but can be successful. More on Intuniv here - http://www.corepsych.
Avatar n tn s doctor is concerned about increasing the dosage because of the appetite-suppressing side effect, and if your son is too thin for his size, he may be concerned about that. Having said that, if the medication is not helping him, then something needs to be done. Continuing to give him medication that is not working is not a good idea. You should take this back to your son's doctor and get specifics about why his weight and an increased dosage don't mix.
Avatar m tn Dude, are you sure you are on 105mgs of Concerta. That is a huge dose! Or are you taking the med twice a day when it is only meant to be taken once a day? And yes, it does restrict the appetite. You need to have a really big breakfast before the med kicks in. Then for after school have protein bars or protein drinks that can be easily eaten (whether you are hungry or not). but mainly, let me know about that dose. The max is listed as 54mgs once a day.
Avatar m tn We recently started seeing a psychatrist and he said the school meds are way too high and should only take at most 56mg for school. He seemed ok on the higher dose. What should I do?
Avatar f tn m thinking the current twitch is likely unrelated to Concerta and may be MS related. If so, it is a new symptom for me and like most MS symptoms, I need relief. Has anyone had any success getting rid of the twitches? I am not under any more stress than usual and not using my computer more than normal either and my last eye exam went well in Sept so I don't know if there is anything that can be done or not. Whether related or not to Concerta, I have had the twitch for 3 weeks now. Thanks!
Avatar f tn I don't know what concerta is hon. But I wish you and your family well. I would try to get maybe a peer of his(an uncle maybe or something?), to try to get him to go to a doc and be checked out. Cause parents have a hard time listening to they're kids sometimes, ya know? So if he has a best friend or close relative I'd speak to them about it. Thats just one womans opionion. All my best sweetheart. I know whats it's like to worry about your Dad.
Avatar m tn That would indicate that you are now taking more V then you are used to from the 18 of concerta - which is kind of what I suspected (if the link is correct). Ya, you do need to talk to your doc. From this link - http://addadhdblog.com/vyvanse-dosage-how-to-get-the-right-dose/?doing_wp_cron=1390777491.
Avatar n tn ve been told to see doctor and to ask for beta blockers or something. I take a stimulant for ADHD (Concerta 72 mg) and i don't want to change because the only one that's not a stimulant (Straterra) made me nauseaous and tired. I'm afraid to tell my mom about going to the doctor because i still want to be able to run cross country/track and do the stuff i like to do. I'm afraid it'll react wth Concerta and Singulair i take and i won't be able to take the concerta anymore.
Avatar n tn In any event, what is needed is a sytematic approach to managing the behavior. It is not obvious that such an approach is being used. What does the school do by way of managing the behavior?
Avatar f tn Hi I have been on Concerta 56mg - 72mg on and off for several years. However, recently I came across a study that showed that long term use of the med impairs brain cells so I stopped abruptly. It has been years since I have been completely off the drug and I noticed that I have lost alot of my personality. I used to be so bubbly talkative and hammy. I no longer possess any of those qualities anymore, among other issues and I feel that they may be due to the long term use of the drug.
Avatar n tn If this concern is noted it would be worthwhile to ask for a referral to a neurologist who is a movement disorders specialist to further identify and treat it. There is a worthwhile article on tardive dyskinesia on Emedicine and also one you could find by doing a google search for the term "Patient Education Tardive Dyskinesia" (note as the site itself says "some of these medications may be medically neccessary).
