Avatar m tn This leads to a lack of insulin, which the body needs to use glucose for energy. The exact cause of type 1 diabetes is unknown, but it is thought to be related to genetics and environmental factors. Type 2 diabetes, on the other hand, is caused by a combination of genetic factors and lifestyle. People who are overweight or obese, lead sedentary lifestyles, have a family history of diabetes, or have high blood pressure or cholesterol levels are at increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
Avatar f tn I took my 1 hour Blood Glucose test over a week ago and I got the results back and I failed. I believe average is 69-139 and my levels were a 159. What are the chances that I can pass my 3 hour fasting blood glucose test? Diabetes runs in the family and I'm kind of worried?

Avatar f tn My dad has diabetes whats the best thing for him to eat to maintain normal bloodsugar. Lately his blood sugar has been really high so what do we do.
Avatar f tn Even though your fasting glucose on that particular test was 92, your A1c indicates that there are times that your blood sugar levels are much higher than normal. You should ask for a Glucose Tolerance Test (GTT). GTT is a series of glucose tests done at 1 hr intervals, over a period of 3-4 hours, after drinking a very sweet, syrupy liquid. You should, also, talk to your doctor about getting a blood testing meter and keep track of your levels for a while, just to see what's going on.
Avatar m tn Type 2 diabetes is a manageable condition, but if you ignore it the consequences are quite serious. Managing type 2 diabetes is done with carb reduction, weight loss if needed, exercise and oral meds if your doctor determines this is needed. If you are pre-diabetic it's a good opportunity to get your blood sugar under better control to prevent or slow the progression to diabetes. Worrying doesn't serve much purpose, but getting a clear picture and determining action does!
Avatar m tn pre diabetes IS diabetes the difference is a line drawn in the sand, the only difference between pre diabetes and diabetes the ease of controlling the BG. it used to be that the definition of diabetes was BG over 250, they have moved that down to 200 and there is talk of moving it even lower.
Avatar n tn I found out a little more information. The ER physician said that the infection was likely the cause of the glucose levels being high. I guess my grandmother's primary care physician didn't believe my grandmother had diabetes based on prior tests. For some reason, she disregarded the lab results sent to the nephrologist.
Avatar n tn You are an individual and you are likely to be more comfortable at a different level than someone else. For me, If my glucose levels get down to around 80, I start to feel it. My wife on the other hand doesn't start to feel ill until she gets down to the 60's or 70's. Test often, journal your test results and how you feel at different levels. that can help you establish a baseline and make you aware of where YOU are comfortable. Again, I urge you to speak to a professional.
Avatar m tn I am told by one physician who himself said to be a diabetologist, said that more the blood you draw on to the test strip, the glucometer record higher levels and when the less quantity of blood is drawn on to the test strip, the glucometer records lower levels and gives a distorted picture of the glucose levels. Isit so? Or does that physician is under the wrong impression about the glucometers?
Avatar m tn Here are the facts, you missed two of them. Diabetes does NOT "refers specifically to a disfunction that causes high-blood sugar." There are three class types of diabetes: Type 1 - Hypoglycemia [low glucose] Type 2 - Hyperglycemia [high glucose] Type 1.5 - aka LADA [Latent Autoimmune Diabetes in Adults] "Dabetics, both type 1 and type 2 can have hypoglycemic episodes.
Avatar f tn The oral glucose tolerance test is conducted by measuring blood glucose levels five times over a period of 3 hours. In a person without diabetes, the glucose levels in the blood rise following drinking the glucose drink, but then then fall quickly back to normal (because insulin is produced in response to the glucose, and the insulin has a normal effect of lowing blood glucose.
Avatar n tn Yes, a complete random blood test would surely have shown high glucose levels, for glucose counts are one of the most common things tested in random non-specific bloodwork. Do continue to talk to your doctor, though, about symptoms that aren't normal, and be specific about what they are.
Avatar f tn I use it for about 5-6 Months and have Diabetes type 1 for 13 yrs. It is also said to be as safe as the pills. Just ask your doctor or search for information in the web.
Avatar f tn I would go off by what they say. And I would inform them it is that low.. are you on any medicine for blood sugar?
1209036 tn?1299178657 The oral glucose tolerance test involves quickly drinking a sweetened liquid (called Glucola), which contains 50 g of glucose. The body absorbs this glucose rapidly, causing blood glucose levels to rise within 30 to 60 minutes. A blood sample will be taken from a vein in your arm about 60 minutes after drinking the solution. The blood test measures how the glucose solution was metabolized (processed by the body).
Avatar n tn First thing you need have on hand is a home glucose test meter. The only way you're going to know how the foods you consumed affected your glucose [blood sugar] levels is by testing, testing, and more testing. Times to test are; fasting - first thing in morning b4 having any food or colored liquids [plain water is OK]. This will tell you how much stored sugar your liver is dumping during sleep hours. Normal levels are 60/70 - 99 mg/dl or 3.33/3.88 - 5.
