Welchol vs statins

Common Questions and Answers about Welchol vs statins

welchol

Avatar f tn Why does your doctor prescribe Welchol for increased cholesterol? What about statins-Lipitor, Crestor? They are not advisable for people with ongoing hepatitis, but if you are SVR there should be no problem. They are much better tolerated than Wellchol.
Avatar m tn I just got off of zetia and welchol. I could not take statins. I tried them all. Used to take Niaspan and fenofibrate but they took me off cause both cause problems in some and had not 'reduced the incidence of cardiac events'. I think they have concluded that neither do Zetia, except when used with a statin, so it is the statin doing the work. I also think Welchol has been shown to not reduce cardiac events too. not sure. I am on Repatha. Third bi weekly shot.
Avatar n tn Lipitor caused severe muscle weakness, Zetia caused all kind of digestive problems and Pravachol zapped my energy...my count actually went up 30 points while taking WelChol! My doctor is telling me that I have no other choices of medicine to lower my count (total 285, HDL 106 VLDL 21, LDL 188, Triglycerids 106.) My sister is having the same problem so I guess this problem is a family thing. I am really troubled by my doctor's lack of concern.
Avatar f tn I also regulate how much Welchol I take to control diarrhea vs. constipation.
907968 tn?1292622204 In fact, the folks doing the study have recommended that the mention of side effects on the liver be removed from the patient information leaflet.Overall, the risk of side effects from statins are 1 in 2,200 making statins one of the safest drugs available. Also, the risk of side effects to the nervous system is .025% of those on statins which compared to .021% in the placebo control group based on the Jupiter study.
Avatar m tn Hello, I have a question about Natural Cholesterol over the counter options vs Statins. http/www.cholesterolinstitute.net/Reviews.html A few of these seem to offer good for the body items that help with cholesterol.  Particularly, this one seems to have the best ratings from that page:  HeartSavior If you read the customer reviews on Amazon, it seems to lower numbers quite a bit.
159619 tn?1707018272 I seen many studies quoted that show how many people admitted with acute coronary events had what was considered normal levels of serum cholesterol and others that take the position that the real issue is inflammation of the arteries as the cause of CAD, not to mention the discussion concerning the use of statins. I have also read many of the pro-statin studies as well and still feel that there is more validity to the thought process that says lower cholesterol helps prevent CAD.
Avatar f tn Crestor is a statin (rosuvastatin calcium) only, Vytorin is a statin (Simvastatin) with Zetia (ezetimibe). Statins work by controlling the production of cholesterol in your liver while Zetia works by preventing cholesterol to be absorbed in your digestive system. Of the two, Crestor is the stronger of the two. In addition, recent trials have shown that adding Zetia does not improve the performance of Vytorin over Simvastatin alone.
Avatar n tn In addition to the cholesterol lower properties, statins are also being proven to lower inflammation which is huge. Given that you have some plaques forming, I would want Lipitor if it were me, it is just that much more effective. Take a look at this, you can click on each study and see how Lipitor performed; http://www.pfizerpro.com/hcp/lipitor/cv-outcomes-data?
Avatar n tn Lipitor has been around for ages. Unfortunately most drugs for cholesteral like Lipitor and the other, are considered statins, and most statins are not good for the liver. If your cholesteral is still high, niacin is a natural supplement that will also reduce your cholesteral numbers.
Avatar m tn My mother has been on three different statins, and two of them reduced her cholesterol, and one did not. Different statins are effective for different people. It may turn out that lovastatin is just as effective for you as vytorin. If not, you can always switch back to vytorin. Or if you don't want to take a chance on the lovastatin, you can always go back to vytorin now.
Avatar f tn It turned out to be the welchol I had started on to decrease my cholesterol. I felt bloated, constipated, a little dizzy and a fast heart rate every late afternoon and evening. I was very fatigued and just felt lousy all over. I have to admit that the pressure feeling in the esophagus was the scarriest.
Avatar f tn and he prescribe welchol. This is the first medicine I have tried that I have taken more then two weeks, I started taking the meds in Oct. of 2008 and stop taking it of Feb. 2008.When the doctor told me to increase the doseage from 2 tables twice a day to 2 tablets 3 times a day each 650mg I believe. I started to get sharp pains through out my head and also like a burning sensation and also I feel like a coldness on my right side.
Avatar f tn Are there any studies associating statins to the blockage of the body's insulin production, thus bringing on type II diabetes?
Avatar m tn Was diagnosed with high cholesterol in fall of 2011 and had been on statins (simvastatin) for almost 3 years. Shortly after starting this drug I was diagnosed with idiopathic angioedema (random body parts swelling). Was assured by my family doc and allergist that this could not be from the statins....so stayed on them for several years and used antihistamines to control outbreaks.
Avatar f tn he quit smoking after 20 years, they have him on meds( he has a high intolerence for statins, but he is taking a med called Welchol it is a powder he mixes in water and drinks everynight), he exercises everyday alternating with cardio and strength training, he did rehab for 4 months, i have completly changed how he and my whole family eats. his blood pressure is almost perfect averageing at 119/78 with a pulse rate of 82. his cholesterol levels are good except his trigliserides(spelling?
401016 tn?1201451802 I would assume they're giving you welchol for diarrhea and the Ami for GI spasms. This is a combination that is given to many (or combinations like it) when someone is experiencing unexplained abdominal pain (perhaps due to spasms) and diarrhea. Ami is used fairly frequently in GI problems, so don't consider it a 'head med.' It is, but in this case it's probably being used to work on the receptors in your GI tract - not your head, although it will do that, too.
Avatar m tn In case-control studies, when they followed these studies, they found that there appeared to be less progression of dementia, or cognitive loss of function, in people that were on statins vs. not on statins.
Avatar m tn 5% vs. 12.5%).[76] In a post hoc analysis of the prospective, randomised GREACE trial, statins were found to be cardioprotective in 123 of those patients with moderately abnormal liver tests (mostly from non-alcoholic fatty liver disease).[78] Cardiovascular events occurred in just 10% of the subjects with abnormal LFTs who received statins, compared to 30% of those with abnormal liver tests not receiving a statin (68% relative risk reduction).
Avatar n tn Ask your doctor about Welchol; it's a cholesterol medicine that binds bile salts. I had mine taken out in February of last year and tried to "tough it out," but after a doctor put me on Welchol, I rarely ever get sick after eating.
Avatar m tn t have enough self control to lose any weight. I had muscle pain and memory loss with statins, flushing and finally facial swelling with niacin supplements. The memory loss was so bad, I sold my veterinary practice and retired BEFORE the lawsuit. I ran for exercise until I wore out my left knee, now I walk. Again, these labs are before any medication.
Avatar m tn For the most part the preoccupation with lowering cholesterol to prevent heart disease and doing it with statins vs reducing inflammation with a nutritional approach will prove to be a tragic farce. However statins have been a great business success for the drug companies.
