Common Questions and Answers about Ways to overcome fear of heights

fear

Avatar n tn I have developed a fear of heights that has interfered with my ability to enjoy my favorite winter sport...snow skiing. The anxiety produced when confronted with height creates what is near panic. The fear only exhibits itself primarily on the ground and outside.. I do not have a fear of flying in a jet airplane or inside tall buildings. It has become a real problem for me to enjoy skiing.
Avatar f tn org/ptsd-guideline/patients-and-families/exposure-therapy It helps break the patterns of avoidance and fear through slow exposure to the fear. I think it can be a little hard to think about that BUT a well trained psychologist in this type of therapy would know how to guide you and help you. Might be worth considering especially if it is causing panic attacks.
Avatar m tn One of the ways that people do this is by steering clear of the situations that make them anxious. If you have a fear of heights, you might drive three hours out of your way to avoid crossing a tall bridge. Or if the prospect of public speaking leaves your stomach in knots, you might skip your best friend’s wedding in order to avoid giving a toast. Aside from the inconvenience factor, the problem with avoiding your fears is that you never have the chance to overcome them.

Avatar f tn The first type is beneficial and is to be encouraged. The second type is a detriment and is to be overcome. The first type of fear is fear of the Lord. This type of fear does not necessarily mean to be afraid of something. Rather, it is a reverential awe of God; a reverence for His power and glory. However, it is also a proper respect for His wrath and anger. In other words, the fear of the Lord is a total acknowledgement of all that God is, which comes through knowing Him and His attributes.
Avatar m tn scarlett11 Try a sleep app that has dozens of recordings of therapists telling you how to go to sleep. You get to select which one you want to listen to, and I often listen to the same recording for months. Sometimes I fall asleep in the first few minutes but for that to work, I have to pay attention to what the speaker says.
Avatar n tn I have had a toothache/facepain for over two weeks, I know I need to go and see a dentist but I have a great fear of going because of cetain circumstances that happened while going to the dentist as a child. I have been taking advil for the pain and most times it is tolerable but now it seems to be getting worse as it is keeping me awake at night.
Avatar f tn To overcome anxiety, one must understand the logic of why the brain is feeling threatened, it sends messages to the body saying its under threat. New pathways need to be created to overcome the old programming. So for example, if you panic over a fear of flying, you must start flying and let the brain realise that its all okay, and reprogram the thoughts. However, the fear of dying can't really be practiced. Some buddhists meditate in a morgue as it is the closest we can get to dying.

Avatar m tn Just curious if you eventually had the crowns re-worked? I've had a worsening fear of heights whereas I could climb up a ladder 10 years ago...it's gotten to a point now that I can no longer transition from the ladder to the roof. I've gotten crowns in between that time, and while I doubt it's connected, your comments got me wondering.
Avatar m tn 8 weeks ago I made one of the biggest mistakes of my life and have been overcome with fear, guilt, anxiety, stress, and border line depression. I tested at 6 weeks and 4 days, and it came back negative (4th Generation, from what I understand pretty much conclusive). Anyhow, symptoms mean nothing as I swore I had almost every symptom. Now it's on me to trust in God and forgive myself. Trust the advice givers on this forum, repent for your sins and God will see you through.
Avatar m tn Agreed. But some of these fears can be overcome. Puppies and chicks tend to be fast moving. Find the right kind of puppy at a pound or store, and I bet his response will be different.
Avatar f tn Have you considered a psychiatrist (doctor who specializes in mental health) or a psychologist (talk therapy specialist to discuss and give treatment and strategies to overcome the anxiety loop of thinking)? I don't know what kind of mental health care system exists in your location. Have you looked into what is available? Anxiety IS treatable. You sound like such a nice, thoughtful young man and I would love for you to get some help with this.

Avatar f tn A fear of food is not entirely the same, but it might stem from some of the same issues, and if so, possibly changing one small thing every now and then to make you feel like your world is a little more in your control will help. (For example, it's going to sound kind of dumb, but when I figured out a different way to capture the bills and pay them, and was able to stick with it for a few months so I knew it was a really durable method, I felt really cheered up. Stuff like that.
Avatar m tn As to how to overcome this fear, all anxiety is overcome the same way -- you either do it over and over until you stop being afraid of it or you seek professional therapy to teach you ways of overcoming it. Learning some relaxation techniques might help, such as meditation and breathing exercises. If the anxiety is beyond any control you can consider medication -- if this is your only phobia, a relaxant you only take when you have to get your blood pressure taken might be of use.

139792 tn?1498585650 A good amount of us learned through the school of hard knocks and reached a point where we were willing to listen in new ways because we were tired of the old ways not getting the results we wanted. There is the thought that if others know our weaknesses or fears, they can use them against us, so we may try to hide them. I remember hearing the expression that we have nothing to fear but "fear" itself.
Avatar f tn It will most certainly recede, however, the fact that you are feeling anxious may also mean that you have an anxious nature and that you do have to learn to live with when there are stressful situations in your life. But there are lots of ways to deal with it now, you can do it. You have to break out of the vicious circle of being "afraid" of your anxiety. Try some of the tips I mentioned above, they may help you.
Avatar f tn Most of tend us to do everything to avoid the things that make us panic but the best way to overcome this is to do exposure with the things you fear so you can come to accept the sensations you feel and eventually, with small steps, do the things you used to do. Have you ever looked into cognitive behavorial therapy or group therapy? It helped me a lot. If that's not an option you can always look into the Linden Method which was a lifesaver for me.
