Avatar f tn If you have too little warfarin in your body, you may be at risk for forming dangerous blood clots. Medications, food and alcohol can also interfere with warfarin, making close monitoring even more important. Warfarin is taken once daily at the same time every day, preferably in the evening, with or without food. Many drugs can potentially interfere with warfarin and may cause your INR to change, putting you at risk for bleeding or a clot.

Avatar n tn I was put on Warfarin (Coumadin) but was not given any warning about alcohol and at least on 2 occasions drank quite heavily (about 5 or 6 glasses of wine in one evening). I have had a series of bodily changes including increased veins on my nose face and on the palms of my hand. Upon returning to the States, I consulted with a doctor who suggested that I get off coumadin given that my clots were in superficial veins. However, two days following my getting off coumadin, (1.
Avatar m tn Blood clots can be treated with anticoagulants, such as warfarin or coumadin as mentioned by addictedrn73. However, depending on the type of clots, location of clots, circumstances related to the blood clots and any underlying diseases that were associated with the clot, these factors would determine the necessity as well as the duration of anticoagulation. With respect to your other symptoms, you need to see an internist who can tackle all of your problems.
Avatar m tn Enhanced hypoprothrombinemic response to warfarin has been reported in patients with acute alcohol intoxication and/or liver disease. The proposed mechanisms are inhibition of warfarin metabolism and decreased synthesis of clotting factors. Binge drinking may exacerbate liver impairment and its metabolic ability in patients with liver dysfunction. The risk of bleeding may be increased. Conversely, reductions in INR/PT have also been reported in chronic alcoholics with liver disease.
Avatar m tn t drink alcohol or drink it to excess if you do drink it at all, you should have no problems with your warfarin...go for your regular blood tests and take the required amount of warfarin daily and all should be well and good. I was told at 32 that it was better for me to have the mechanical valve as I would likely need to replace tissue valves every 8-10 years, which didn't appeal to me at all..
612551 tn?1450022175 Right, laprascopic, I have a problem with words longer than four letters. I think I had a endoscopic heart echo in the build up to my heart surgery in 2007, and that word got associated with getting into one's body through small holes. I read you profile and philosophy on life and death.
882102 tn?1240622411 I am not a heavy drinker of alcohol (but did drink a half snifter of cognac every night to stop keeping my wife awake with my coughing when I had pertussis). Normally my wife and I share a bottle of wine with dinner and that is all the alcohol we normally drink. I had Bornholms disease (coxsackie virus) about 25 years ago. Finally I am stone deaf in my left ear - due apparently to mumps when I was about 18 months old. ENT specialist said it is nerve deafness.
Avatar f tn Your question is too general... drink alcohol? What medications are you taking? Most meds recommend no alcohol, but I take beta blockers and have a drink socially, no binge drinking, no drunkenness. I have done this for at least 15 years and there have not been any problems I have noticed.
Avatar n tn My son has been on warfarin since he was 7 weeks old due to having a mechanical Mitral valve replacement. His INR today is 4.8. The highest it's ever been.He is six months now and just starting solids which may be why the INR has been all over the place. I have been instructed to withhold his dose tonight and I'll test him again tomorrow. I've been doing some reading that INR of 4.8 is undesirable but not overly dangerous. Is that the case for babies as well?
Avatar f tn t recommend you do it, it is my own personal experience and everyone is different and can react differently but if you really about to drink alcohol with your Effexor please do it with moderation and drink some water along and use light beer.
Avatar m tn t see how they could treat with warfarin under those circumstances. Anyone taking warfarin must be monitored routinely with a PT to check clotting factor. Warfarin can be some nasty stuff but if reduces fibrosis what the heck. They've thrown every other drug at us and we still keep bouncing back. Thanks for the info.
Avatar n tn Thank you for your answer. My cardiologist mentioned stopping the warfarin and going with lovenox for 3 days prior to a catherization but said there was no need to stop taking plavix.
Avatar f tn I have recently been put on Warfarin for Paroxysmal Atrial Fib. I feel miserable and anxious on this drug. They continue to up my dose, 11mg. at present. I have decided to quit the Warfarin but wonder how to go about this. Do I quit cold turkey or taper off? Anyone else has quit Warfarin and how did you do it?
Avatar f tn I have been on plavix for years with no problem but this warfarin is messing with me big time. I have been dealing with migraines for a couple weeks and after the first dose it seemed to help..even when i got up i felt much better not like my whole circulation was contricted like it normally does...same this morning...but i also had a headache yesterday that felt different that developed..
351404 tn?1299489130 I hate the idea of both a pacemaker and also Warfarin with all those blood tests - it makes my hair fall out and softens fingernails also, but no one has so far suggested ablation which seems to be more favoured in America from what I read.
Avatar f tn As far as the calcium or Vitamin D I do not know of any effect on those vitamins from taking warfarin. I will also check with my pharmacist per Sassie's suggestion.
Avatar n tn Sorry you had so many problems with warfarin. For people with a-fib such as yourself, there are more options than there are for mech valve patients, if for some reason warfarin is not tolerable. But I have to stick by my statement that the side effects you experienced are not what is expected, usual, or common with warfarin.
Avatar f tn 9 (should be between 2-3) and then when I saw a lady Spanish doctor I told her I had diarrhea she said I could not go back on the Warfarin because its dangerous with diarrhea, I must continue with injections, I objected saying but it is the injection making me have diarrhea. She refused but put me on different injections Hibor. Instructing me to take injections only for 5 days and then injection and Warfarin for 4 days before going to my local clinic.
Avatar m tn I was diagnosed with AF 9 months ago. Went on Warfarin and then had a failed cardioversion. Went on Amiodarione and had a 2nd failed cardioversion. Was taken off the Warfarin and Amiodarone and told my AF is permanent and ablation unlikely to work either. Half the time I feel kind of OK ... then I get a few 'bad days' when I feel so dizzy and faint with mild tinnitus in both ears and edema in both feet/ankles. I just lie on bed most of the time until it passes.
1569985 tn?1328247482 I also need to have a colonoscopy done in the near future. I had to have a D&C last year and I went through quite a bit of angst and confusion as to whether or not I had to stop taking warfarin. The gynecologist said it was up to the cardiologist; the cardiologist said it was up to the gynecologist. It was very upsetting and I was totally upset with both doctors.
