ve tried to read as much as I can about warfarin along the way. I even went to a day-long CEU workshop for medical professionals on warfarin management and got the certificate. But I'm still not an expert. To my way of thinking, the experts are the hematologists, pharmacists, and other health professionals who manage large numbers of people's warfarin on a daily basis.
Do to a leg blood clot I've been taking warfarin (7.5) for three years. I am 62 years old and very active. I weight lift, jog, and ride a bike. Will I have to take warfarin all of my life or at some point can I discontinue it?
You have a lot going on in your body that could make you feel bad, beside taking warfarin, and the warfarin is probably the least likely culprit.
The amount of warfarin that any given individual has to take to stay within an INR range of 2.0 to 3.0 (which is probably what the doctors mean when they tell you they want you at 2.5) will vary, depending on how rapidly that person's body can metabolize and excrete the warfarin.

My specialist has feferred me for an ablation procedure which I am waiting for now. I was put on warfarin and bisoprolol and due to the nature of my work I cannot go back whilst on warfarin as i work offshore. I test my own blood and adjust my dosage of warfarin. Usually I'm right in range 2.5 to 3.5 (2 art heart valves). About 6 to 8 weeks ago, I took augmentin for 10 days, 2 weeks ago, I took another antibiotic for 5 days. Since then, my PT/INR has been too low, 2.0. My diet and meds have stayed the same. Given that yesterday he said to not take the warfarin he was changing me from the genertic warfarin and putting me on the brand name of the med coumadin. Said some folks do not tolerate warfarin well but do well on coumadin and i am to start the coumadin today. I would be lying if i didn't say i am a bit gunshy at this point. This med has made me absolutely miserable and today is my 43rd bday...
i an 59 years old and open heart surgery to replace mi mitral valve about two 2 years ago . Now y have a mechanic valve st jude # 31 and i have to take warfarin everyday for the rest of my life . My problem is that after my operation , y have rashes ,smalls cuts and dry skin in my hands , my doctor try 5 different creams , for fungus dry skin ,etc, and nothing change , the told that is not psorirys also, They said it is because i take coumadim .
Pradaxa seems to have with a pretty severe bleeding issues my aunt was hospitalized for a major GI bleed so just be aware of your body. That being said you seem to have some serious heart problems not to be negative, but you should expect to be on thinners for the rest of your life. I have similar heart problems and I'll be on warfarin forever and yes; the weekly/monthly blood test is a real pain but it's better than having a stroke.

My son has been on warfarin since he was 7 weeks old due to having a mechanical Mitral valve replacement. His INR today is 4.8. The highest it's ever been.He is six months now and just starting solids which may be why the INR has been all over the place. I have been instructed to withhold his dose tonight and I'll test him again tomorrow. I've been doing some reading that INR of 4.8 is undesirable but not overly dangerous. Is that the case for babies as well?
3 days later (boxing day) I was rushed to hospital with chest pains and diagnosed with self imposed pulmonary embolism. I was put on to Warfarin and monitored in hospital for 2 weeks.
9 Months ago I had a DVT, Which broke off and became a PE. The DVT was in my Left Knee, and after 3 months of using Warfarin and several Ultrasounds and VQ Scans Later I was diagnosed as Fine and no more need for the Warfarin.
t know how warfarin is affecting your life style. I have been on warfarin for years and had no concerns about running and bike riding, and using power wood working tools. All of these activities puts one at an increased risk of a cut and bleeding, but I simply take the risk. On the other hand, I don't sky dive, or pick fights ....
