ammonia

Avatar n tn t hanlde it We decided it was best to not go forward with the Chemo but in I started to notice things happenging to her, she was forgetful, mean, not eating, and walking with out picking her feet up (shuttle walking). Saturday a week ago i went to visit her and she could not move. I thought she had a stroke but the doctors are saying it is because her ammonia level in her liver is 178. It comes down but goes back up and she is not getting any better.

Avatar n tn He has had the acitis on his abdomen, swollen feet and is not able to function without the assistance of someone to help with walking, sometimes eating and severe confusion. He has been in the hospital 3 times in the last month with high ammonia levels. He was just told he needed to be on a no protein diet and is taking the lactulose. The last time he was in the hospital his ammonia level was 250. He was not responding to anyone and it mimicked a stroke.
Avatar n tn I have been doing a lot of research on the web, especially on the ammonia test, and read the symptoms for a level that high which would indicate a pretty bad liver function are a lot of fatigue, memory loss, confusion etc. I have no symptoms I have noticed. I guess my question is can this insidious disease progress this fast when it took this long to show up? I do not drink and have not for 20 years or more. Is this ammonia level just freaking me out or is it really high?
Avatar n tn Patients with liver disease are unable to process or detoxify ammonia so that ammonia levels can reach dangerously high levels. This is coupled by increased ammonia production of colonic bacteria, especially if one is constipated or has an irregular bowel movement. High protein intake can also lead to an incresed ammonia production. I suggest you talk about these possibilities with your doctors.
Avatar f tn I was started on seizure meds because of the presentation of symptoms. Is it possible to have residual affects? Can your liver function tests be in a normal range and you still experience these symptoms? I have also been diagnosed with systemic lupus, and I have started having migraines.
Avatar f tn When I was on them, I felt better and functioned better, but had horrible insomnia and euphoria. Since I have been off of the steroids, the symptoms I have had off and on for the past 3 months have come back with a vengence - ocular migraine at times, blurred vision, dizziness, ataxia, weakness arms and legs, constantly dropping things, mixing up names, mixing up numbers, can't get the right words out of my mouth, and a frequent rash on my face.
Avatar f tn I washed my boyfriends shirt today and it was soaking wet with sweat and smelled like a bottle of ammonia had been dumped on it. He is diabetic and had pancreatitis a few years ago. He doesn’t take his diabetic medications and still drinks beer almost everyday. He always has headaches, body aches, doesn’t sleep well and sweats buckets just walking. Any help would be appreciated.
Avatar n tn Most of the ppl who I have run across who are really bad with these symptoms are stage 4 cirrhosis or ESLD. What is your current HepC status? Do you know, or are you starting to have obvious symptoms? I suggest you find a good Heptologist to talk to about your options.
Avatar n tn I know there are sites that give you symptoms of chirrosis but can someone who has it tell what they have experienced.
Avatar f tn Before my transplant I sometimes I felt unstable on my feet and would hold someones hand while walking. I wouldn't call it vertigo but I did fall down quite a bit. The problem may be from encephalopathy. It is from ammonia build up and effects the brain. Is he taking lactulose? Has he had his ammonia levels tested? If not, he should do so asap. Not to scare you but encephalopathy can make one delirious.
412873 tn?1329174455 Hi Isobella, Decompensated cirrhosis can lead to elevated serum ammonia, which in turn can cause hepatic encephalopathy. Ammonia normally develops in the gut, but when the liver loses it’s synthetic capability, it is unable to metabolize any longer. Does that help any? http://janis7hepc.com/cirrhosis22.
Avatar f tn My 88 year old father has a very very strong ammonia smell to his urine. We know he has kidney stone (that can't be remove due to health issues). I hate to take him to the doctor's for nothing, but could this be an infection?
Avatar f tn Anyone have elevated ammonia levels? Are you having any symptoms and at what level did your symptoms start? I just had my first ammonia screening done and the level came back 119, with less than 47 being the reference range. I'm not having any symptoms. This seems to be the story of my life. All of my labs are going whacky and I'm still feeling fine. I'm afraid one of these days it's all going to hit and I'll be a mess.
Avatar f tn Other wastes can contribute to changes in mental function and consciousness, and brain levels of ammonia may be much higher than blood levels. This can make correlation of patient symptoms to ammonia blood levels difficult. Not drinking and a good diet for the liver will help with many symptoms. I stopped drinking completely over a year ago and the last few endoscopies I haven't needed banding. I hope this is helpful and good luck.
1475202 tn?1536270977 Some persons are greatly affected with slightly elevated ammonia levels while others with experience no symptoms of hepatic encephalopathy with high ammonia levels or vice versa. Seeming that the test is irrelevant or at least this is the way of thinking by my hepatologist during my most recent visit to the transplant center in my area. So why do we even talk about it?
2080183 tn?1362802073 Then about two and a half weeks ago I was diagnosed with an extremly high level of ammonia in my blood which the drs think was from my depakote. Since my medical discharge been going thru alot of physical and mental changes.
Avatar f tn I would think so - look up ammonia poisoning on Wikipedia and compare that to the symptoms you have.
Avatar m tn Since then I had my first experience with a high ammonia level of 98 in 2014 which put me in the hospital, almost in a coma state, for 5 days. Lactulose, Lasix & Spirolactone were given. After being released, it took a week when I returned to the hospital, now I was put on Xifaxan along with the other three meds. All has been well until Feb. 14, 2016 when it hit me again, ammonia level of 250, survived.
Avatar f tn The symptoms he experiencing is called hepatic encephalopathy which is related to high ammonia blood levels. Does he have any other symptoms of cirrhosis like ascities, jaundice or muscle waisting? I am assuming your father has advanced decompensated liver cirrhosis. Is he eligible for a liver transplant? Unfortunately the only thing that can change his prognosis at this point if he does have decompensated cirrhosis is a liver transplant.
190885 tn?1333025891 I am assuming you have cirrhosis? (I have a list of cirrhotics but I know it doesn't include everyone with cirrhosis here). Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) and brain fog are two different conditions. "Brain fog" has nothing to do with ammonia levels. Most ammonia in the body forms when protein is broken down by bacteria in the intestines. The liver normally converts ammonia into urea, which is then eliminated in urine.
Avatar m tn The diagnosis of hepatic encephalopathy requires the presence of impaired liver function and the exclusion of an alternative explanation for the symptoms. Blood tests (ammonia levels) may assist in the diagnosis. Attacks are often precipitated by an intercurrent problem, such as infection or constipation. Signs and symptoms The mildest form of hepatic encephalopathy is difficult to detect clinically, but may be demonstrated on neuropsychological testing.
