Vyvanse for children with adhd

Common Questions and Answers about Vyvanse for children with adhd

vyvanse

Avatar f tn My 8 year old has been on Vyvanse now for almost two years with having to increase his dose just once. We held him back last year and it worked out great for his learning abilties and letting him mature a bit more as well. We recently had a big move and obvious school change with that. Even before we moved we have always had trouble with him acting like a baby. He cries and wHines with just about everything when he doesn't get his way and throws tantrums just like a 2 year old would.
Avatar f tn I highly prefer Vyvanse over adderall because I do not suffer from side effects w/Vyvanse as with the adderall. The Vyvanse is much smoother than most all other adhd drugs. I have never experienced shortness of breath while taking Vyvanse, however, I am 25 years old and 180lbs. I am also a Registered Nurse. I would imagine that these annoying side effects will eventually subside with continued therapy w/Vyvanse. Give it 2-3 weeks becaue his tolerance needs to build up first.
Avatar n tn About four children in our group are on this medication (all in conjuction with intervention and/or therapy). For these children, this "drug" seems to work the best with the fewest side effects. Our child takes Celexa - before that Prozac and Effexor. Celexa is the best one for her - so far. However, as the above poster stated, be sure the doctor prescribing the medication is one whom is very knowledgeable in psychiatric medications.
Avatar m tn I think the world would disagree with you. The only people claiming it is not addictive are those prescribing it for children with ADD/ADHD. There are safer ways to treat this ailment.
Avatar f tn Strattera is a non stimulant med used for ADHD. Whether or not it would be effective for you, I don't know. This site lists almost all possible treatment options. Although for some reason, I couldn't find Strattera listed, so you need to google that. The site is http://www.healing-arts.org/children/ADHD/medications.htm And the following site also lists (with info) non stimulant meds (they do mention strattera). http://www.baltimorepsych.com/NonStimulants.
Avatar f tn i have a 5 year old boy that currently has adhd, but for the past three weeks he has become very very defeint some time to the point that he gets aggressive, could he have odd along with his adhd, right now he is on 40mgs per day of vyvanse for adhd. his doc, gave him .1mg of clonidine to help with his aggreesion. does clonidine help with odd??how long does it take to see improvements??
Avatar f tn My husband took Vyvanse for 14 months for adult ADHD. It worked for the first few months and he was able to do a lot of projects around the house that he never would have done before; I was impressed. Then, I noticed he became short-tempered and irritated very easily, which eventually turned into full-blown aggression. We did not associate this with the drug so he kept taking it. Then we moved and he decided not to get his Rx refilled by a new Dr....
5757880 tn?1395578022 So I am a little confused. Was your son diagnosed with Asperger's? If so, I question the doctor's use of ADHD meds because this maybe aggravating the Asperger's which is causing him to lash out. People with Asperger's need stability and routine and counseling to help work through their social disconnect. I say this because I have a son with Asperger's and a son with ADHD so I am familiar with the signs of both.
Avatar n tn The doctor had told me the number one sign of add is when you were a child going to doctors office if you spun around in the chair that spins you are most likely to have add or adhd. My daughter was diagnosed with adhd she is the calmest child i have i thought she had add but nope. All my children including myself have adhd. and I mean all 5 of us have it. the meds actually do help you concentrate.
Avatar f tn I am very healthy except for this disorder, but was seeing a doctor for medication, Strattera when I went on medicaid. Does medicaid cover Stratterra, Vyvanse or Concerta and other ADHD or ADD medications?
665851 tn?1225826009 t know if it will ever go away, but my 16 year old son has been on Vyvanse for 4 years and last year was diagnosed with OCD after taking him off for the summer for a drug break. He also started to have some major anxiety where he will go in his room and cry (loudly). I am now trying to wean him off after he started having chest pains and his left arm went numb. Very disturbing. Did the Food & Drug Administration test this before approving it?
Avatar n tn But if sge is abusing it she will likely start to complain about having an extremely high tolerance for the vyvanse...
Avatar f tn When i was about 5 or 7 years old thats when my doctor told my mom i have ADHD. My doctor gave me to take Vyvanse and Strattera. The Vyvanse i take is 60mg capsules and for Strattera i take 60mg capsules to. I had problems over the years. I get distracted very easily but i try not to look or be distracted but its hard sometimes. especially when people are talking, making noise and being annoying is distracting me. There are other stuff i turn my attention to though.
1367899 tn?1278121440 My sister and I started a blog on Adderall to learn more about the medication along with alternative and complementary ADHD treatment options. Any feedback from users of Adderall or Adderall XR would be greatly appreciated. Topics to be added this week on http://Adderall.org How is Adderall XR different from Adderall? [Adderall vs. Adderall XR] What is Adderall? How to Make Adderall: [Adderall Background Information] What are the best Adderall and ADHD books?
Avatar f tn //www.corepsychblog.com/2009/06/vyvanse-dosage-for-adhd-finding-the-safe-top-of-the-window/ Best wishes. Let us know what happens!
Avatar f tn I started on the Vyvanse mostly b/c I also suffer from ADHD and it is really great so far for my attention at work. However I am really leery of taking new meds especially if I do not need them and even so I would like to see how I react to one before taking others on top of it. Anyway b/c I have ADHD those types of medicines don't interrupt my sleep like they would most people so I have no trouble with getting to sleep.
Avatar n tn I was perscribed my starting dose just monday.. (it's Wednesday now) and started at 20mg Sunday I move to 40. I only got 6 20mg tablets. And first day I felt sooo high like I was on cocaine for about 3-4 hours. The 2nd day,(yesterday) I ended up taking a 2nd 29mg 2 hours after my first one. And I took my 29mg morning dose 2.5 hours ago and I already am trying to justify taking another (to myself) Crazy.
Avatar f tn All I know is that the medication Rozerem which adjusts the sleep cycle in the exact same manner as melatonin is a safe and effective sleep aide but I don't know if its prescribed for children. Its complex with medications for children as the dosages and responses are very different than adults. All of the medications you mentioned are used for ADD and work but they are all activating as they are stimulants so its complex as regards sleep.
1218509 tn?1267490923 I was diagnosed with ADHD when I was 9 years old. Currently I am on Adderall, because Vyvanse was too expensive when I didn't have insurance. I took 60 mg of Vyvanse for three to four months, back in mid-2009; it was absolutely amazing. It was very smooth, it lasted around the 12-14 hours my Psychiatrist said it would, and I did not give me any side effects. I would highly recommend Vyvanse to anyone who needs a ADHD/ADD medication.
1447814 tn?1284735457 Your son is in an early developmental stage. He is too young for such a diagnosis and Vyvanse is a dangerous drug (look on the ADD/ADHD forum for horrifying info). Find another doctor, or sit back and wait for your child to grow up .Get him involved in anything that requires a lot of activity. Does he have a bicycle? Or a tricycle? He needs to be active. And try to get cooperation and help from the school, instead of criticism. Also look to your own parenting.
744777 tn?1235089263 Are you sure that the ADHD medicine is right? I know someone with a child that used Vyvanse for ADHD and the chid did not do well on this medicine. Maybe you already tried other types of ADHD medicine. If not, maybe try to get your doctor to change to another medicine. If he is too quite and not social, maybe it is also too high of a dosage. Vyvanse is in the same family of ADHD drugs such as Anderall. Maybe you can try the Ritalin family, including Metadate CD.
Avatar n tn ll do a little more research on him and get back with that. Thank you all for your replies. Oh, the Vyvanse was started at a lower dose and has gradually gotten larger.
Avatar f tn You will notice the effect within min of taking the meds if they are the right one for the individual. Better impulse control such as a decrease in motor mouthing for ADHD for example and they will calm down. Some one with SCT will do better with fuctioning in complex social situations like a room full of people having conversations. Their processing speed with will increase so they can keep up with whats going on and not feel so lost.
Avatar f tn However, all studies show that the best treatment for ADHD is both meds and behavioral modification (learning how to deal with ADHD). Since you now know why things have not been "clicking" for you, there is a lot you can do to deal with this problem. If you doc has not been feeding you this info, I think I can clue you into sites that you will find helpful. You are not the Lone Ranger in dealing with this. By the way, MJ, is a very common way to self medicate.
Avatar f tn Those things, combined with a good 8 hours straight of sleep, could make a huge difference. They do for my son and for me. So I do agree with the above posts as far as that goes. But just switching to vitamin supplements and throwing out the meds isn't likely to help. For more information about natural AND medical treatments check out Dr. Daniel Amen's website. Most of all....Keep trying.
Avatar m tn Hi I have been taking 30 mg of vyvanse for a couple months now and I feel awesome taking it. It has helped my concentration and I believed it helped with some of my anxiety problems as well. I was curious do people take this drug for the rest of there life once they start taking it.
