I've always had a bad gag reflex. But lately its so much worse. I cough I gag. I gag when I brush my teeth. I gag swallowing my prenatal vitamins and a million other reasons.

Hi. I have been having horrible gag reflex eveytime i brush my teeth or floss. Has anyone else been suffering from that? Any ideas what i can do to help with it?

so all my life ive had a sensitive gag reflex. going to the dentist, swimming, terrible smells, and a few other reasons would trigger my gag reflex. however its never been that bad, just super sensitive to the above factors. i just went to mexico for spring break and had what i think was very slight food poisoning. my stomache was always slightly queasy/nauseous and whenever i started drinking i would start dry heaving cause of my gag reflex.

m having a ton of nausea and morning sickness, have been the whole pregnancy. Has anyone ever had throat muscle contractions which pressed on the gag reflex and made you throw up? I've had swallowing problems before, but now it seems like my throat muscles are becoming spastic and just contracting and making me throw up. I also just got over the swine flu a few weeks ago and have heard that illness like the flu can bring about a relapse. I know i'm not sick from the flu, because I can clearly feel my muscles tightening in my throat. Is this common?

In order to relieve the terrible feeling of nausea and dry heaves I triggered my gag reflex by sticking my finger down my throat and I vomited bile. My gag reflex was sooo sensitive during my first tri. When i reached 17 weeks it improved a little bit. Now that im turning 20 weeks, it is starting to get oversensitive again. Which do you have? A hyper gag reflex (extremely sensitive gag reflex) or a hypo gag reflex (the absent of gag reflex)?

How is your gag reflex normally? If say you are brushing your teeth/tongue and go to far back will it make you gag? The reason I ask is maybe check the back of your throat for anything coming in contact with your hangy ball or tonsils. Another thought is too much acid in your stomach. I'd avoid all those things you said cause the gagging. You can live without dairy and chocolate. The laughing and exercise is a different story of course.

It could be psychological associations with those items, it could be a physical thing (a gag reflex that comes from an unusual esophagus shape or something) or it could be that you just need to try different preparations of those items. Hard to judge which, but I'd talk to a doctor in case the problem is physical.

I started feeling like I have something around my throat throughout the day and will just throw up. Sort of like a sensitive gag reflex. ve had the same symptoms on/off for over 11 years...I do notice the gag reflex more now...But I still do gag when I brush my teeth (or should I say my tongue) yet in the office it didn't show any reflex at all...IDK? An increased gag reflex is common in pregnancy not to mention the neasua so that a common issue.

Few months ago a lady posted...a helpful way to brush your teeth without all the nausea and puking...it actually helped a lot....use very little toothpaste. .don't lean over the sink..stand up straight...and smile while brushing your teeth....I did it and actually stopped puking while attempting to brushy teeth...

The whole lot of us has or has had chronic sinus problems. For my brother, I know mucus plus an excellent gag reflex generally makes for a bad time (and yes, he does have the GERD as well). I've been taking the Guaifenesin type product to thin secretions, and I honestly think that has made things worse for me, at least as far as the vomiting. When it was thick globs of stuff it just hacked right up. Now...it's just stringy and coming from everywhere! So gross.
