507241 tn?1225491785 After adopting a dog from a shelter my dog was diagnosed with kennel cough. Many people tell me their dogs never vomited when they had this .My dog finally started eating but when she drinks water the dry cough starts and she vomits the water everytime. This has been one week now.How long will this last ?? My vet put her on antibiotics and he is away for a few days.
Avatar n tn YES......The Kennel Cough Vaccine covers about 2 strains of Kennel Cough...There are approximately 30 something different strains which make the shot a JOKE!!!!
Avatar f tn I just adopted a dog from pound 3 days after being home she came down with kennel cough she is being treated with antibotics, my question is should I get rid of her chew bones? can she reinfest with the cough if her phlem is on them ?
Avatar f tn It could be kennel cough. Kennel cough causes coughing that sounds like whopping cough and can be so severe that can actually lead to vomiting. Other possibilities are collapsing trachea, heart disease and allergies. Benadryl can be tried at 1 mg per pound. The average Shih Tzu would require a 12.5 mg. tablet up to 4 times per day. Kennel cough may require antibiotics and cough medicine, if severe.
Avatar n tn Just make sure the new dog gets his shots, including the one for kennel cough. The dog with the bad cough most likely needs antibiotics and possibly a shot depending on the severity of the cough. A trip to the vet will do the trick. Sometimes, even after the shot and meds, the dog will continue to cough for about a month. My puppy seemed to get worse before he got better. It'll all work out. Good luck!
Avatar n tn I have never had a pet, but always wanted a little dog...my husband surprised me w/a Chihuahua from the humane society age 3 & all black w/brown spots around his feet! When he first came, he was sickly, coughing, not eating a lot, then not eating @ all...we took him to the vet & found out he had kennel cough! He has taken ALL his antibiotics, but still has a cough when he first wakes up!
Avatar f tn It would probably be best to take your dog back to the vet for chest X-Rays to make sure that he is not developing pneumonia. Especially since your dog's cough has evolved from a dry cough to a productive cough with colored phlegm. He may need an additional antibiotic, cough medication, and additional diagnostics such as a culture and sensitivity or a transtracheal wash.
Avatar n tn I have spoken with my vet about kennel cough, but the cough does not sound like the dry, hacking cough of kennel cough. It is a very congested sounding cough. Also, we have had her on multiple doses of antibiotics, some of which were some very high-powered ones in combination with a low-dose steriod, which carry some very serious side effects for such a tiny puppy.
Avatar f tn Hi, Im not a vet but i have experienced kennel cough well not me my dog had it twice from pets i have brought home from the shelter, when he had it the vet told me he would feel as though he had the flu and it took ages for him to get better and also with ref to the guardia they treat that with metronidazole antibiotic and i have been on that loads of times before and it makes you feel very sickly so im thinking if your puppy has kennel cough and guardia and is on metronidazole she is going to f
184674 tn?1360860493 I feel like this is partly my fault. Last week, my both my dogs came down with kennel cough, which Bryce was unknowingly sent home with from the rescue. The week before that, I had both Bryce and Blackie at my mom's house because they had not yet shown kennel cough symptoms, so I had no idea they had it.
694466 tn?1227677802 Was your dog vaccinated for kennel cough within the last six months? Next question: When was your dog's last heartworm test? This blood test should be run annually on all dogs. Is your dog on heartworm preventive? When was the last dose that you gave? It is not possible that she contracted heartworms from the kennel. If your pet has not been on heartworm preventive, it would be a good idea to take her to the veterinarian for a blood test. Is she sneezing or coughing?
Avatar m tn When you can, just double-check with your vet that the vaccines given to your dog as a puppy included kennel cough. I say this because it is not always given as some countries/states have differing policies, resulting in different points of view and different approaches by vets.
Avatar n tn We had a health dog one day and the next coughing and hacking. His cough sounds dry like a honking goose. Took to vet he said could be kennel cough and put him on doxycycline but also said he heard a heart like murmur. The vet did say that the heart could have sounded like that cause of the dog not feeling well if it was kennel cough and/or being anxious. How did I have a vibrant healthy eating dog one day and a sick one the next. His appetite seems still to be ok.
Avatar f tn She is a house dog, I stay in an apartment complex, and I take her to dog parks from time to time. SHe is very playfull but when she has this cough I think she is about to die or something it's scary.Any help is greatly appreciated.
Avatar f tn I also think that she has kennel cough, while we were going through theadoption process, one of the volunteers mentioned that she might have it, but that when we take her for her first well check, we could get her antibiotics then. Her well visit is monday, but i think i am going to bump it up to tomorrow. can anyone tell me.. is the panting normal? she was in heat at the time of her spay.
Avatar f tn We keep going to the vet trying tests after tests and prescribed medication and they cant find anything nor does anything help. Its not kennel cough cause she took pills for that. We still havent tried chest xrays or checking for heart disease but its too expenisve and dont really have the money for it right now.. so I just want to know if any of your pets had something like this and you found out what it was? Thanks the help!
Avatar f tn One of my dogs got over the cough in just two days, but my other dog has had the cough since the second week of July. She just finished her antibiotics and prednisone and now she's on cough syrup, the pediatric robutussin, three times a day. She's still coughing, but not as much as last week. I think it's just something you have to wait out.
Avatar m tn Be sure your dog has been vaccinated for kennel Cough as this is quite common and a hacking cough is the cardinal sign in an otherwise, apparently healthy dog. An Herbal Canine Cough remedy you might consider that is helpful to relieve coughing associated with Canine Kennel Cough is Slippery elm and the dose is 5ml which is the equivalent of one teaspoon by mouth, as needed.
507241 tn?1225491785 My vet diagnosed kennel cough yeterday in my 9 month old dog just adopted from a shelter. She was started on antibiotics.Today she is very lethargic and sleeping most of the time. Refused food today and I am very concerned I have read many topics on this but I don't see anything about the dog being so lethargic and not eating. She also refuses to let me open her mouth to give her the pill.
Avatar f tn I have 2 boxers. Jersey and Stephie. Jersey starting having diarrhea real bad then he started coughing so hard he was dry heaving and nothing was coming out. So we went to the vet. He said he wasn't sure what was wrong n put him on some antibiotics n something for his stomach. That night the coughing got worse and kept us up all night. Took him back the next day n the vet said he had tracheitis and it wasn't an infection it was mechanical? Gave him a shot and another medicine.
Avatar n tn then maybe hes chewed something and its caught, kennel cough air bourne...if hes been around other dogs or in public...it would seems something is not right and that you probably already know... Tip: If my dog has a hair or something aggitating him, I give a little bread w/butter, the butter picks up the hair and the bread take is down the stomach... Good luck, keep the forum posted of your outcome...
Avatar n tn Actually we are currently out of town however I did contact our Vet and she also said it could be kennel cough, which is odd since our dog is an indoor dog and is never around other dogs. She also said it could be a nasty cold... since we cannot make it in right now she recommended I get some Benadryl and give her 1/2 teaspoon 3 times a day. Ever since we begun to give her the medicine she seems to have gotten much better.
Avatar f tn When this happens he starts coughing and water sprays out of his nose . He’s got sick with kennel cough recently and I was worried about him coughing so I took him to the hospital bc I was afraid of heart disease or trachea collapse . Well he was fine , and the kennel cough went away after 5 days but then he kept drinking and dipping his nose underwater (this tends to happen when the bowl is full) and one time he got so much water up his nose it kept coming out of it .
568875 tn?1424397205 Never hurts to ask!! BUT NO thankfully you cannot catch a cold or Kennel Cough from your dog! You are most likely just coming down with your own cold or possibly allergies! Hope you and puppy feel better!!
Avatar n tn Small dog came from Humane Society has kennel virus. Can I give dog human medicine untill Vet visit?
Avatar f tn You said your dog was at the groomers he could have got it from there .Its like dog flu and if its kennel cough it needs to be treated with antibiotics.
1491913 tn?1288486935 Do you think he could have something stuck in his throat? There is another thing that dogs sometimes do, and that's called "Reverse sneezing" Take a look at some videos of dogs doing this Reverse Sneezing (there are some on youtube) And see if the sound he makes is anything like that. Reverse Sneezing is harmless, and no-one really knows the cause, but many dogs do it.
Avatar n tn Occasionally the kennel cough vaccine can cause a transient minor kennel cough in the recipient, Just as the flu vaccine can cause flu like symptoms in humans after vaccination. Or she could have additional problems as I mentioned previously. No vaccine is 100% effective, and if the coughing is that severe she should be on medicine to surpress her cough, because the cough itself can cause irritation, and pain.
