I am 32 and alcoholic of about 9 yrs. But started getting cold chills only once or twice a month and sweating weather I have drank anything or not. When I don't eat its worse but my blood sugar seems to always be kind of in range but fluctuates a lot. s version of ketoacidosis and there is probably a more scientifc explanation. The bottom line is that ketoacidis left untreated can have very serious consequences. It sound s like you may be experiencing periodic ketoacidosis, but not to the point where you can't use any of the food you are eating. The bloated heavier feeling could result from higher blood sugars, weight gain from eating more or water retention form the stress on your system.
The heavy breathing is a clear sign of ketoacidosis. As is muscle pain, nausea, and stomach pain. The reason for the muscle pain is due to the fact that the ketones start to eat away at the fat and muscle storage, so you're child will feel pain and a sense of weakness. Also the sweating...yet another ketone sign. Another thing as well is ketones tend to attack the immune system, which would explain his recurrent ear infections. Rapid weight loss is another sign.

I totally agree -- ketoacidosis can kill. Diabetics who are not under control DO lose weight, and no matter how much he eats, he is going to continue to lose weight while the body consumes its own fat cells because there is not enough insulin present to convert the carbs he eats to energy. The body goes after fat stores in desperation for energy.
Tell them this has been going on for months and is getting worse. If this is type 1 diabetes and it is not treated you could die. There is a very real risk of developing something called diabetic ketoacidosis. This can be fatal. You are far too young not to act urgently on this.
Do not wait to see your Dr at Christmas. Please go to the emergency room after you read my message. If I am wrong, then you have been reassured by seeing a dr.

I have severe asthma and during one life-threatening attack, whilst being treated in the Intensive Care Unit, I developed severe ketoacidosis (blood sugar at 29) and had to be put on an insulin infusion for five days. I think it was generally assumed that this was induced by the mediation given to treat the asthma (including high doses of steroids) as I was never followed up.
