Venlafaxine vs citalopram

Common Questions and Answers about Venlafaxine vs citalopram

Avatar m tn In general, the newer antidepressants (SSRI and SNRI) do not prolong QT interval so much. A possible exception is citalopram (and escitalopram). As far as I know, paroxetine and vortioxetine are fairly safe. How long is your QT interval?
1441157 tn?1284075251 Unfortunately most of the drugs you're talking about are called different things here in New Zealand, but as to the question of the title, mood stabilisers and anti-depressants can be mixed quite effectively. I'm bipolar II, my shrink has me on 60mg Citalopram (aka Celexa) and some lithium to augment it. It's definitely doing something, although it's not doing enough, but we're still tinkering with the dose a bunch.
Avatar m tn 1 mixture of (S)-Citalopram and (R)-Citalopram]; Escitalopram [(S)-Citalopram) is a pure enantiomer. The dosages for Escitalopram are typically 1/2 of those for Citalopram, and there are fewer side effects, suggesting that most side effects come from the (R)-enantiomer.'' Basically escitalopram is the new citalopram with less side-effects and requires only half the dosage and I think it is the reason for it's cheaper price. -http://en.wikipedia.
Avatar f tn Hi, I was started on nefazadone hydrochloride years ago, worked well but was withdrawn from the market, citalopram for about 12 years, weight gain and few other side effects. stopped working. Escitalopram gave me fast hearbeat as did trazadone, Setraline fast or slow and irreg heartbeat. Never considered effexor xr/venlafaxine as i was so put off with the reviews of weight gain and the awful discontinuation symptoms. Prozac was great but major weight gain in two months.
Avatar m tn Paroxetine (Paxil), Fluoxetine (Prozac) and Citalopram/Escitalopram (Celexa, Lexapro) are inhibitors of CYP2D6 - the enzyme responsible for metabolizing lots of medications. Fluvoxamine (Luvox) is inhibiting another enzyme. Sertraline (Zoloft) do not have this side effect, and Venlafaxine (Effexor, a SNRI) is also perhaps a good choice, as itdood said. Citalopram and Escitalopram are both prolonging the cardiac repolarization and they are usually not recommended with arrhythmias.
Avatar n tn Hi, I've been suffering with some problems with anxiety for a long time and more recently they have led me to depression. Months back before I started really feeling the depression my doctor had me try out 20 mg's of citalopram. I was on it for three months and really didn't feel a difference in myself, so I decided to go off them. I did have some trouble withdrawing as it was quite the pain in the ***.
Avatar f tn They swapped my medications, from Venlafaxine HCL to Citalopram HBR thinking the side effect was causing my blood pressure to go up, then sent me home. I not only had withdrawals but the new medicine caused my Fibromyalgia to flair up significantly. Within one month I went to my heart doctor begging for Nortriptyline (something I used previously for Fibromyalgia) they prescribed it and it helped 50% but still my anxiety was bad, and other symptoms were present.
Avatar m tn I was put on escitalopram after citalopram was no good for me. I too built up what seemed a resilience to it having been taking them for over 3 years and am now on venlafaxine instead. Been on these ones for just over a year now and similar thing happening again, it is just your body getting too used to it. All I make sure I do is mention any mood changes to my GP and they then decide what is required and when.

1305597 tn?1275336446 citalopram (celexa), fluoxetine (prozac), sertraline (zoloft). Another medication that is sometimes added to SSRI in the treatment of depression is bupropion (welbutrin) and it has even been shown to cause a small weight loss over the first few months (it suppresses the appetite). However, if the eating disorder you are is either anorexia or bulimia this is not an option because during clinical trails bupropion caused a slightly increased rate of new seizures in those two eating disorders.
Avatar n tn I hav taken Effexor Hcl 150 mg generic called Venlafaxine HCL ER Capsules 150mg, for years. A new doc wrote for the same medication in tablet form by mistake instead of the caps. Will it work the same for me?
5811228 tn?1374718728 I was on that for a while and it made everything worse. Now I'm on venlafaxine and it works wonderfully.
Avatar m tn Both citalopram, (Celexa) and escitalopram, (Lexapro) are SSRI's and both have, as unlabeled uses the control of panic. They both also have CNS side effects of anxiety in the beginning stages of treatment. You say you've been on the citalopram for approximately 5 weeks? It can take up to 35 days for citalopram to reach "steady state" in your blood, which means you won't begin to feel any real relief from your depresson for possibly a bit over a month.
Avatar f tn I was on Effexor XR then started using generics Venlafaxine 100mg and Citalopram 20mg. I thought I had the flu after stopping the drugs. Until I read the posts I didn't know what I was experiencing. My withdrawl symptoms have been getting sweats, chills, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, dizziness, vivid dreams, overall feeling awful, anxiety, .... How long does this last?
Avatar m tn I didnt technically taper off citalopram, i didnt take it regularly like I should which I know is bad. I dont know about the depression, but I do know that I get really bad anxiety attack..so now i'm worried about taking it, i dont wanna have anxiety attack worse than what I already do.. my muscles are already always tense and it doesn't take much to give me a panic attack. so idk.. :( i'm worried.
Avatar f tn It may take 6 to 8 weeks or longer for you to feel the full benefit of this medication. Continue to take venlafaxine even if you feel well. Do not stop taking venlafaxine without talking to your doctor. Your doctor will probably decrease your dose gradually.
Avatar f tn Depends on your md but zoloft and wellbutrin( no clue how to spell that) are frequently prescribed to pregnant women. Also depends on how severe the depression is a risks vs benefits thing. As far as anxiety not really sometimes anti depressants help. My md said take benadryl, it doesn't make you less anxious but makes you sleepy...
